just seen a mk5 gti today was grey and he had painted the front vw badge looked cool.
from a distance it made the whole grille stand out more but could still see the vw badge.
his back one was still silver.
anybody know were to purchase a black badge but i guess its a d.i.y :undecided:

Do a search in the Members section for Komenda. Go into his profile and you should see his signature. The front VW badge is black

Use matt black and not satin !
And be sure to apply atleast 7 layers of paint allowing each layer to settle for atleast an hour before you apply the next layer. Reason for this is because the paint will wear off when you wash it and with general driving. Applying several coats will mean only taking it off and painting it once in 3/4 months. Yes it is a headache but worth it.
I used spray paint which was a doddle to apply.
Satin will reflect and shine with sunlight and i personally didnt want a shiney look. Atleast the matt is dull which focus'es the attention on the red lipstick but the VW sign is still visible but not over-powering
-
may be showing my age here but my brother many moons ago got paint to stop flaking off chrome bumpers on his talbot sunbeam  by using ordinary gloss paint as an undercoat
it wont flake off and it means you don't have to rub down the chrome
-
got mine off ebay, very good quality paint job, no sign of paint flaking off and its had the jet washer over it numerous times! Was £25 inc P&P
-
woah, could make some money selling these things for £25!
-
whats that place called that robin got his cf one from?? i want to order front and back now
-
somewhere in usa i think. have to wait for him
-
....Hi guys
It doesn't look as if they are doing any carbonfibre bits anymore  but I got mine from http://oempl.us and this is their current range :-
http://oempl.us/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=75_23 (http://oempl.us/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=75_23)
I still want a rear one!! I'll call the TTshop and see what Dave has got on with his sourcing and I'll also email my contact in the U S of A.
-

into some redneck bull horns. I was watching Smokey and the Bandit and thought they would set my car off.
Nah. It has some red and grey touches to match the red highlight around the grille.

Did mine myself... Front one needs a good prep first, then plenty of thin layers... It's stood the test of time well I think.

....Good news for me but I'm afraid it's bad news for you  ....They have discontinued making them and have only one rear left in stock and it's got my name on it. I didn't ask why but I expect they weren't selling enough and they aren't cheap to produce. A good friend of mine runs a R32 and produces limited stuff privately in carbonfibre - I'm expecting to see him in a couple of weeks and will have a word.
However, I will keep my scouts on full alert and will tell you if anyone else produces them.
-
....Looking good, Martin . Who needs expensive carbonfibre!
-
How can you take the back emblem og for spraying?
-
If you look really close up on my rear VW you can just make out the joint (thin white line LHS). You need to fit a stanley blade in between the joint and then twist apart. Do this all the way round until it comes off. After spraying just clip it back on.
Here's both taken off for spraying...

Is that the paint you used in the pics? Also what did you use to rub it down with just normal fine sandpaper?
-

Yes... I had mine change a while back and they fitted the new type like yours... The new ones fitted to the new golfs fit flush unlike mine which sit proud by about 5 or so mm
Just use normal wet and dry... Make sure you rub it down good, get all the chrome stuff off then clean in warm water and dry then spray...

thats impossible mines an 05, im guessing that the ones that stickout are newer ones, and the flush ones older. :undecided:
-
The newer rear ones are like the front VW badge two pieces, were as the old 05 style are flush fitting but are also flush to the back plate ( more like a sticker type ). The newer ones fitted to the older 05 car stick out more than they do on a new car. Without pictures it's hard to describe.

OLD Type... Flat sticker look

NEW Type... 3D look

White worm is a layer of oxidisation that gets under the laquer and creates a line that slowly works its way inwards between the metal and laquer creating a milky wavy line that looks a bit like a worm has dug it's way in!

-
thanks matey, definately getting there
-
thats looking the mutts nuts mate, i would maybe try leaving the VW emblem black and try spraying the inside of the letters red Or is that going to far
-
Yes Mr g, that is one sweet looking ride! Lovin the red/black theme  , kinda opposite to what im doing
-
Where did you get the red GTI badge from please....
Martininwillerby
-
Got mine from ebay, in fact I have one spare as I bought one for the Mk4 but I dont think I will put it on that as there is no other red to match it too unlike on the mk5
-
yes they pop up on ebay from time to time
it's not an original one and is slightly smaller but was only about £5 inc postage
the original ones come with a rabbit, i believe an American part usually about £40
-
im not keen on black rims, but have to say that red on the tyre rim really does set those wheels off!. Top Job there brian G

I'm not a big fan of red cars, but yours looks mint pal
-
Was ordering some bits from VW so I though I would get myself another badge to play with ...
£10 badge + £6 matt paint + £4 laquer + couple of hours on and off =
(http://homepage.ntlworld.com/neil.gibbs3/images/gti/boost/black_badge.jpg)
One thing I did notice is the back plastic bit the chrome clips to is black on the new badge but was an grey/black on the original one - needless to say I put the black one it as my car is black!
I also managed to remove my original too so I painted this as a backup
-
hey neg ill give you £25 inc p&p if you can do me a matte black badge??
-
I'll give you £26  :embarassed:
-
get yourselves a group buy on a carbon one, they look the dogs. i know painted is much cheaper, but catch carbon in the sunlight and it looks really good. if you like a black badge its the only one to have eh redrobin. really good value as well at about £120 . bought mine after too much red wine  but well pleased with it. the weight saving really helps performance  i have to believe this to justify the scary price.( hope the wife doesn't get to read this, it'll be testicles for breakfast)
-
....Regarding the carbonfibre VW badges (front and rear), oemplus no longer supplies them but I think I've found another source if anyone is interested. I'll report when things seem more certain.
-
My 'spare' doesnt have laquer on it yet by the way, I put a coat on the one on the car.
I am tempted to have a word with a contact at a smart repairer who might be able to do a batch of these for me, I will call him Monday and see how much it will cost.
