Hi Guys,
first post, so first of all hello!
I recently bought a 55 plate GTi, having sold a MarkV R32.
I had H&R springs on the R32 and am looking to do the same to the GTi, but according to the place where I had the R32 done I need to replace the shocks as well as the lowering on the GTi is more than that on the R32 (30mm versus 25mm)
This does not make any sense to me at all, has anyone changed the shocks when fitting either H&R, or Eibach Sportline springs?
From what I can tell from doing a search all the results that I have looked at it seems that the springs only were changed.
Although I have only had the car a short time I have had a Revo remap, along with a CAI and Milltek cat back system.
The performance is fantastic, at least on a par with the R32.
I will miss the 4WD though when it is cold and/or wet, it would be nice to be able to get the GTi engine in a 4WD chassis, I know that is what is in the S3 but I don't like the look of that, too bland.

I know its no necessary that you must have shocks when fitting springs only however it will help with the look and the ride if you do fit them. Neg whos a member of the forum has H&R springs with Koni FSD shocks and the drop on that car is absolutely perfect  Something I will be doing in the near future!
-
alot of people have fitted the H&R springs on standard shocks but if you dont want to take the risk then go for the eibach sportline which lower it by 25mm and they say to be used on standard shocks.
-
thanks for the comments guys, I think that I will go with the H&R springs and see how it goes.
If necessary I can later on get the shocks replaced with something like the Koni FSD's.
-
....Someone please correct me if I'm wrong but I think the Koni FSD's limit the choice of springs if they are to work properly. I know that Eibach Pro-Kit springs work well but do H&R also work and do they lower the car more?
-
i think you can choose most springs for the fsd's. then choose on how high you would like it with which you choose, i think
-
I wondered if you might comment on that RR
I had seen a lot of your previous posts about the combination of the Koni's with Eibach springs due to them only working optimally with a smaller ride height reduction.
I have seen a few posts on here where H&R's have been combined with the FSD's, eg Neg on his car. Based on what he has said they seem to work well in combination.
If I do need to change the shocks later I will certainly be very careful in my selection of what to use based on your comments, I may go with something different if that seems to be prudent.

....I've just this minute spoken with Andy at Awesome and they only recommend the Eibach Pro-Kit and one of the H&R springs. He confirmed my view that Koni FSD's won't work properly with most other springs. Koni certainly wouldn't support their product if not fitted with springs as recommended.
Another factor is that although my insurer adds zero costs for mods such as my CF bonnet and a Quaife diff, they would add costs if I lowered my car more than it is now. There's a general assumption in the car insurance industry that bodykit+lowered = boy-racer = higher insurance risk.
-
I had the Koni fsd kit with Eibachs and its was a good combo, but it didn't drop by much 10-15mm if lucky, Koni recomend the Eibachs but H&R get the better write up reg drop levels i.e the 30mm.
-
When I was choosing my setup I did a lot of research (with help from some other members) and I was going for the Eibach + FSD setup but at the time there was an issue with the Eibach rear springs not actually lowering the car at all which made it sit high at the back - so I did more research into other options and it seems the only other recommendation was H&R (quite popular in the states with FSD's) and after speaking to a couple of people about FSD's and H&R I went for this combo.
I understand Eibach have now solved the issue they had with a batch of rear springs but I am extremely happy with my setup and it feels like it works great which is what matters.
As for the original quesiton, you dont need to but for the cost I would upgrade the shocks at the same time to save having the same job done twice.

REDROBIN...

Are you still with Directline for your car insurance, as I am and have inquired about uprating the cars suspension and there is a cost for that mod. There are several grades of modification to the suspension starting with self leveling, lower and uprated, all mods come with a additional cost depending on the mod cost (£1-£1000, £1001-£2000 and £2001 up). As I see it with what you have (springs, shocks & ARB's) it defo uprated...
Surely the mods you have CF VW, CF Bonnet, R32 Rear with CF Insert, 18"Monza II, Front Lip, CF Front Centre, AP BBK, Carbino Intake, Remap, CF Engine Cover, Miltech, Audio Sat-Nav Upgrade, Eibach ARB's, Eibach Pro-Kit, Koni FSD's you MUST be paying a premium over and above the standard cost of insuring you car.... Please Tell...
I had to declare that I had tints @ 30% side and rear (£250), BBS 19" Ch's (£1350) and was charge another £68 plus an extra £200 excess because these fell into the £1001-£2000 band. I was told that the tints wouldn't generate a cost but I still had to tell them and the wheels even through are VW spec were put on/change after the car was purchased from new. That does mean I can have the springs done and there won't be any additional cost... Which is a good thing
I would be VERY interested in you view / answer. I had read that you said you had a good relationship with your insurer, but surely everybody should be classed the same no matter how famous you are... LOL

....
Crikey! Martin!! You know my list of mods better than I do!! That's scary! I've just peeked out of my window to make sure you're not outside perving on me!
Firstly, when I said I had a good relationship with my insurer I didn't mean I got special favours - I don't (as far as I know!). I pay £690 which includes fully comp, no claims discount, windscreen etc but I have £775 damage excess. They originally added for my Milltek and suspension value but have not added anything since except for a small amount for my remap. It's simply all listed on the policy.
-
That's very good to hear... we don't want you driving around without the correct cover...
I paid £272... Yes two hundred and seventy two pounds fully comp (£500 excess) for me and the Mrs and then they added another £68 for the mods valued at £1001-£2000 and put the excess to £700. Bloody cheek... LOL
Which is better than MORETHAN and I could then put the BBS's on..
Also they gave me an extra 10% cos the Mrs car is insured with them and next year she'll get 10% cos I'm Insured with them and so on..
AND they promised NOT to increase the premiums next time round (special 90 day offer)...

PS... whats the cost of all your mods, have you ever tallied them up. All that CF alone must be a lot.

....No, I most certainly haven't added them up! I've built my near-perfect car, so what's the point? Your question is a bit like asking me what my annual running costs are
-
I wasn't been nosey and I wouldn't expect you to tell me either, But over the almost three years you've had your car you must of spent a fair bit on her.
You know £50 on this £100 on that and sometimes £1000 on the other. It all adds up. I just wondered if you've ever tallied it up in you head.
Cos it does indeed add up to the point where it gets frightening.....
It's just like me running my car. I have my car for me (My Toy), but when you start adding up all the costs it starts to get expensive....
£26 in petrol to fill her up again and I've only done 118 town miles since I last did it...
And that's without.
Loan Repayments, Insurance, Tax, Servicing, Tyres, Mods, Cleaning Stuff, etc, etc.
I know, I know, I could well do to get rid of her sometimes, may be move house get a mortgage but then what would I do on my days off......
I could always visit youporn.com to get my thrills....

thanks for the information, it is very useful!

Hi Martin - Yes, I've obviously spent quite a lot but I have no regrets. It's resulted in a car which still puts a grin on my face and which I still turn around to admire each time I walk away after parking after nearly 3 years. I enjoy every journey whether long or short.

I know what you mean there RR, it must be something about the GTI! I owned two higly modified MK5 GT TDI's before my ED30, although they were great cars I got bored of them extremely quick! within a month or so! I have had the GTI for about 4 months now and I cant stop grinning! Usually I would bored by now but I dont want to let go of this one and I have not really started modding yet

Yes RR I agree...
By the way RR where are your VW wheel centre caps ???.... or are you investing in yet more on CF

....I lost one (for the second time) and then noticed white-worm on the others so I decided to remove all. I haven't found anything I like which fits yet.
