Hi.
I was hoping to get some advice on my 16v. The handling just doesnt seem right. Everytime i go round a corner, the back end just feels so 'loose'. I just wants to slide out and feels like its going to spin me. Its as if when i go over any slight bumps, it throws the car out, and just doesnt want to stay true. Its not too bad in a staight line, but with the cornering problems, i just dont have the confidence in it.
I rolled my 8 valve about a month ago which seemed to be suffering from similar symptom, but it didnt feel as bad as this new one. With the 8 valve the back end over took me round a corner and i flipped afer hitting a back.. I want to be able to drive my 16v enthusiastically, but only when im happy with it. Could the shocks be worn and old that they just arent giving the back end he grip it needs...??
Any help would be great please!

I would check the rear axle bushes first....common fault but they normally come with a knock!!
-
Are the rear axle bushes easy to do.
-
it's a matter of droping the back axle off and cutting the old bushes out and then pressing the new one's in.....fairly simple with good tools but the passenger side one has the load valve in the way!! I would never fit them again unless they were easy to fit poly bushes....
-
Is that likely to cause the back end to 'wnder' then?
-
I'd check you're right foot, you sure you not just expecting a wee bit too much of your golf
oh.... it is a Mk3 of course :lipsrsealed: yep deffo the above

To be fair it's a combination or worn axle bushes and pants standard suspension. Poly bushes highly recommended to replace the rear axle bushes

Do the poly bushes make a big difference and is it harsh with them fitted.
-
Yes the rear end will be a lot firmer, but that's a good thing, huge difference round corners
-
Mine has started to do this a little bit but the bushes are ok. Im wondering if the suspension top mounts could be leting the shocks swing a little bit. not sure though :undecided:
-
ive got some polythane rear axel inserts, i was gunna fit them to my 1.4 but aparently its hard work fitting them,
i mite sell them so if u need some give me a shout

make the car bounce and from under the bonnet see how many mm play ithere is in the top mount .
-
Mine did this ...
Solved by lowering it 60mil on aftermarket Shocks/Springs now I just fly past roundabouts.
-
Mine has the exact same problem. I am looking at getting a new suspension set up and definately some poly bushes pretty soon.
-
I have just fitted new top mounts and coilovers - next is axle bushes with poly ones and the difference is incredible - transforms the cars handling....
-
All my bushes are standard rubber..... i once drove a golf with poly bushes and didnt like the feeling!! could be my age?? but there not something would i recommend unless you drive really hard....
-
mines been doing this, you get to 70 on some roads and it just gets a bit wobbly.
Going to do the brakes in June so might get the bushes done at the same time, got a knocking at the front too. Maybe a suspension top mount.
none of my old cars have done this and it can be scary on the B roads in the wet specially with nankan tyres as I am finding that in the wet they are real poor.
The cost to maintain my Golf is getting pretty high so am also considering selling it whilest it has 12mons MOT, none of this came up on the MOT though which is odd. Only a vague mention of the rear axel being mounts being stuck but still doing their job.

thats what a GTI is for is it not?

yep mine has done it too, scared the sh!t out of me the first time it happened ... forgot i wasnt in my lowered mk2

I'm guessing you went into the corner too fast, lifted off the throttle mid-corner, then possibly braked?
If you took the same corner the same way even with a trick suspension and bush setup, you'd probably still come off the road.

Get your braking done earlier, then you'll be on the throttle mid-corner, not off it. :nerd:
-
getting all the bushes done plus a sorted suspension set up will give you loads more grip - but will probably make it less progressive when you go past that level of grip.
I tend to trail the brakes when going into corner's to try and get the front turning in nicely but you have to be really careful that the back doesn't start trying to overtake as has happened a couple of times with me, ending up facing the wrong way on a roundabout
-
To be honest, the only thing ive ever experienced from my golf is under steer. Surely this is a lot more common than the back overtaking you, unless its wet or something??
-
if you trail the brakes on the way into corners it can help the front turn (light braking obv!) as it will be slowing on a tighter line than the back, it will try to come round if you hit a bump or brake to hard whilst turning in etc....
if you heel/toe you can really get a mk3 going quite nicely
-
Trail braking's a bit risky on public roads imho
Mk3 pedals are at good heights for H/T though
-
yeah fair point..... only drive my golf on track now (well will do one day!!!)
there is no trailing the brakes in my vectra I can tell you!!! sh!ttest chassis ever, hand at ten to two and smile when you get round the corner!!!! lol
you know those black and white chevron signs with special speed limits on in national speed limit roads that try to get you to take a harmless corner at about 30...... they are put out especially for vectra drivers
