'90 8v digi gti with more than 235k on the clock.
cutting to the chase....
i saw a puff of white smoke whilst reverse parking the car earlier, this was after a 20 mile drive. got out and sure enough there was white smoke coming from the exhaust. it was hardly bellowing out, more similar to when you first drive the car on a cold morning. it didnt smell like coolant. there were no puddles etc, roads are completely dry.
i thought it was HGF but i lost no amount of water, and it hasnt done it since!
as i'd stopped at a supermarket for 10 mins prior to this stop, the engine wasnt overly hot, e.g. oil temp was only 82, water temp needle 1/4 way up. engine sounded normal.
HG was replaced 30k miles ago.
ideas? :undecided:

errr cold weather??? could just be that.

at 11am this morning it was v v v warm! :lipsrsealed:

As long as it isnt using oil or water I wouldnt be over worried, I know you've had the HG done but its still an old car !

Have you got any oil marks around any of the plugs mate, look straight at the head at each HT lead and see if there is any oil around there.

there is and there has been since i bought the car. it uses 1 litre very 1000 miles.
what does this mean?

Your symptoms could point to your brake master cylinder being on its way out! brake fluid could be leaking into the servo, and from there being sucked into the inlet manifold....

any other symptoms of brake master cylinder problems? what should i look for?
as i said in the first post, the smoke/steam didnt smell :undecided:

Check your brake fluid level! could be that its only the odd drop getting through at the moment, so mark the fluid level with a pen, and check on a daily basis
Brake fluid should be changed at least every couple of years, as its hydroscopic, meaning that it can draw water from the atmosphere, this can then lead to rust damage to the internals of the cylinder, and creating the leak, If you do suspect and confirm that the master cylinder is leaking, change it for a new one ASAP..
Hope this helps...
