Title: Opinions on these.?
Post by: Gulfstream11 on 13 April 2008, 12:43
There was something missing on my GTI..So I set about designing and had these made.
This

To this
(http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y131/Gulfstream11/DSC00394.jpg)

1.2mm Brushed stainless steel.Designed on CAD/CAM and CNC laser cut.

What do you guys think.?  Guy with the machine wants to stick some on the bay but reckoned on some feedback 1st.
Also did an R32 insert.

Got a couple of sets if anyone wants some to try out.

its those little touches that make all the difference :afro:

That looks brilliant, red gti lettering could top it off i reckon (or sticker/decal lettering i.e. ed30 logo)

Id take a set! Although i think the corners need smoothed out a little and a bit more flush as it looks a bit too sharp and the gap around it isnt 100% flush (maybe im just being fussy? lol)

cheers guys.

I,ve had some in my car for a week now.Not held down with anything but they aint fallen out or rattled. The VW handle itself is 1.5mm deep so designed them using 1.2mm stainless..That way you can still grip the handle for use without slipping or losing any grip.

The edges were sharp after cutting but I deburred mine quickly and easily with no compromise to quality.

Its a work in progress, slight modification to dimensions are been made thats why I aint stuck em down. But when I do I<d use double sided tape yes.

In between doing work stuff I,ve done designs for GT,TDI,FSI and could draw up an edition 30 I s,pose.Cant do the red inserts into the GTI,Its that small they would lose quality I reckon.

That cnc laser is awesome to watch.

I,ll send a set of GTI ones out to someone to get more feedback.Better to see in the flesh the pics dont do the grain on the stainless justice.

I f you could match the edition 30 ali trim and paint it red with same font style, you might be onto a winner.

The corners have a radius and it would be impossible to sit flushed.I,ve designed them to sit  inside the handle. If you go check yours out you,ll know what I mean. Gonna adjust the corner so not as sharp.LIke I said work in progress but wanted feedback on the current design.
Cheers

Ok. 3 sets going out for testing.. I know they need tweaking slightly by seeing them in mine.I just need other MKV owners to see them
and give me another opinion on how they look in the motors.

I polished a set up but maybe their a tad too shiny, the interior has that brushed grain effect so wanted to stay true to that.

Cheers guys.

Title: Re: Opinions on these.?
Post by: Gulfstream11 on 13 April 2008, 16:22
I,ll get on with adjusting the original design.. make sure on my GTI that all is well. I,ll hang on for feedback from my testers then off we go. I reckon I could handle all designs.Instead of EDITION 30 it will have to be ED30,its a bit of a small part for such a long logo. But I,ll try it out. Letters such as VW,GTI,MKV are great because they are single font lines, if you get me..Its the D/R that have middle sections that need to be tagged in.If you check the R32 one out you,ll see.

As for price, well forum members will be looked after.

Like the look of them - could well be interested when you finalise things!
Title: Re: Opinions on these.?
Post by: NewGolf on 13 April 2008, 17:29
They do look like a big improvement, I'd buy a set if they were available, but do agree that colouring in the GTI would look neat. If they could be colour matched so you buy whatever colour your car is, or the red stitching on the ED30 etc.

Good job.

Title: Re: Opinions on these.?
Post by: Gulfstream11 on 13 April 2008, 17:43
The font for GTI (and the other) was painstakenly recreated on autoCad from the original. Now the VW police are gonna get me. :embarassed:

As for the red colouring.Someone posted earlier to cover the empty handle with red before applying the badge.I could do a program for cutting out the letters from plastic to insert but getting the right colour may be difficult.(as well as putting costs up.)

I might give it a go and see how things pan out on mine but for now its just the stainless inserts.

Ok!! I got mine in the post today and have to say I really like them. Its a nice subtle idea and catches you eye well as you get in and out of the car. Great quality product too.. you would be happy if you paid for it lets put it that way.

It seems to sit in the seat adjuster quite well, only I now know what you mean about the rounded edges making it a little difficult to fit in, it almost gives it a little room for movement but not until you move it yourself. Mine seemed to stay in quite well and I gave them quite a good test. Would recommend A+++++++

When I get a chance I will post up some pics

got my samples today mate, thoughts :-

very good quality (especially considering there samples), good enough to put in the car now IMO
the brushed effect lends itself well to the standard trim on the ED30
GTi font looks spot on
only niggle i noticed was on the inside around the letters some parts were marked, but not noticeable until your very very close to them, would never be seen when on the car

all in a good looking product, when i get chance i will put them in the car and see how they look, cheers for sending mate, and if you do sell some im up for buying some

Yeah was a bit crap with getting the car pics up.. will try to do this a little quicker. I think VW can learn a few things about nice touches from ya gulf. Would be great if it was already moulded into the plastic but I guess that would make it quite difficult to fit yourself. Did have a quick think about heating it up and trying to mould it into the plastic myself.. then remembered the time i set my sofa on fire :embarassed:

Cheers guys..

182blue.  I agree on your point regarding the inside of the lettering. The set up was an estimation and ran some off mainly to check it would work, hence the samples. My Laser guy reckons it will improve by adjusting the beam/pulse.Also maybe a .3' increase on depth to give him something more to work with.. The laser feed marks will still be there but hardly noticable. The brushed effect I thought matched well with VW,s effort,as expected for Sheffields finest, so thats a go.

Like I said earlier,I've adjusted dims and need to cut a set out,try it in my GTI to make sure. Hopefully by Friday they,ll be ready.

Dunno about price yet, they will be going on the bay,but this forum will be looked after 1st.

Cheers. Gulf

OK Mine arrived today... god my posty must be slow compared to the others.

Only a few points to note..
The brushed look is superb and looks oem against the dash strips in my ed30.
The 2 pieces had obviosly rubbed together in the envelope, so perhaps tape them to a piece of card or paper to post next time?

I guess I need to use some thin double sided tape to hold them in place, they slide about.

Overall, very impressed with them and as long as the cost of production is low enough to warrant your time, I think you're onto a winner with little touches like this.

Ok guys,update.

Firstly Cocopops.Apologies,I taped the other samples together but took yours to work as I,d ran out of first class stamps and had no masking tape in the office. Thanks for the feedback. Sorry again.

ManU. That engine spin requires a special tool to produce the scaling effect.

Tonight I grabbed the laptop and headed down to the laser guy.He was,nt too pleased as he had to interrupt his normal work so only got one chance.

Improvements made are.. Increase from 1.2' to 1.5' in depth. This gave a bit more meat for the laser to work on,also messed with the beam settings for optimum cut. This improved the finish to the lettering and edges.

Increase in width, really needed to fill the gap left by VW.

Result is 99% there.Just one of the corners still is a bit acute. It has been adjusted but my time was pulled.Going back tomorrow to finish off. So should be in production Saturday A.M

I need them to be spot on.There going in my car too and like you guys I dont want rubbish.

Right price.Reckon I'm going to put these on the global marketplace that is the bay at £8 a set including postage, padded jiffy not the household envelope you guys got. So maybe a forum buy at £6 is pretty good..Thoughts please.

When all is well I,ll start a thread in the group buy section.. Any more comments, good or bad, please let me know.

Cheers. Gulf.

p.s anyone notice the left foot rest is missing something.

Gulfstream11....considering you are selling a unique product which is not in production any where else why dont you take advantage of what you have...£8 inc P+P....im sure you could sell them on the bay for £14.99 easy.....take advantage of what you have  (Ofcourse leave it at £6 for us!)

there looking good, can i add a suggestion if it hasn't been made?
can you add a red backing underneath , peice of sticky laminate so it would co-ord with the interior lagos & stitching?
you could use this for selling to and jack the price up to cover expenses............or i could just add it myself lol.

It was just a note, I wasn't aware of the others.

Great news and decent price, agree with others through to make your margins ebay buyers would pay more I reckon - hey you can always try it but £10-£15 I reckon would be decent, you have to make money where you can

Great forum price BTW

count me in on a set of these beauties. Let us know where to send the cheque. That really is a great price for what looks like a quality item. Thank you for coming up with these.

One thing i will say is be carefull if you make them thicker, as most people will be using sticky pads you dont want them sitting to proud

Are they the same.Just googled a pic and they look different. As for ppl using sticky pads to secure the inserts. The pads are at least a millimetre to begin with.
Reckon on using either clear silicon or double sided tape
Title: Re: Opinions on these.?
Post by: joesgti on 18 April 2008, 16:15
i think maybe you should do a list as a sticky with peoples names who want to order some, also you should only order if a pm has been sent to you from a buyer, then add their name to the list.

im thinking red insulation tape under the GTI and double sided sticky on the other bits too keep it down

I haven't even picked up my GTi from the dealers yet and I am already looking for mods and the like. Saw those black BBS wheels on ebay thought,

"hmmm how long would i have to eat peanut butter sandwiches for lunch before I can afford to buy a set?"

Good pics R32UK.. The samples look good, better than my mobile shots. The 3rd pic up you can see the drivers dead pedal.I'm taking mine off tomorrow and designing a cover for it. I reckon just the logo part of R32 would look pretty cool on that.

Anyhoo...  Test run complete, parts now 100% perfect.Doing a short run tomorrow A.M around 15 sets.Only 15 due to time constaints, laser guy very busy. GTI first,R32 + more GTI on monday.

Can I ask Hurdy,(moderator) where would be the best place to start a sticky.?.Don,t want to sully this excellent MKV forum with buying lists.

GT boys.. I have done a test on them. Not happy with the font,so they will follow later.Group buy price will remain to forum members when complete.

Can do just the R as in R-Line if anybody interested.

When sticky starts can I have a list of members with type wanted. It will be open till thursday as friday I,m off to the ring.If all goes well will post Friday morning. Would prefer paypal but cheque for those unable will be accepted but please understand clearance time etc. details will be posted for paypal.

I,m going to stick mine in with double sided tape.

Any thoughts good or bad much appreciated.

Cheers. Gulf

Not stuck mine in at all... they just seem to rest in there quite well. Did catch one when getting out (dont ask how) and managed to bend the middle of the R somehow but as you can see from the picture I managed to straighten it out a little. Very delicate that little bit of the R!
Title: Re: Opinions on these.?
Post by: Gulfstream11 on 18 April 2008, 20:43
you must have read my mind. That has been adjusted but not by much.Really need to keep the R font style without too much Tag.Thats the only problem with letters like R,A,O it needs a small tag to keep them together.

Post by: bobotheclown on 18 April 2008, 21:30
just a thought and it's a bit ghetto but here goes. Down at B&Q you can get this sticky back vinyl called Fablon. They do a red coloured roll and maybe you can cut out a squre piece that goes underneath the GTI lettering and then stick the metal plate on top of the Fablon?
