Title: Any previous Focus ST owners
Post by: MikeGTI on 09 April 2008, 21:54
Hey guys a bit random I know, but the ex is ready to get rid of her Audi A3 3.2 Quattro DSG as its an 03 plate with 60K on the clock. Plus the fuel and taxman are really beginning to ruin the fun factor.

Well her dad works for Ford and has come home with two interesting proposals for her -

Brand new Fiesta ST for £9.5K or a brand new Focus ST-3 for £13.5K.

The Fiesta was her initial choice as she thought much cheaper insurance, tax and fuel plus cheap price.

However running it through the Fords finance calculator the Focus ST is just £20 per month cheaper.
Checking with the DVLA the Focus has a CO2 rating of 224g meaning its £205 per year in tax. Making the Focus it a bit more attractive.

So I was wondering if any previous Fiesta or Focus ST owners could give me a bit of detail about their previous experiences and in particular advise if the Focus' fuel consumption is really as bad as I've heard.

Thanks in advance.

i had one, road tax is £210, next year it will be £300 , i never had a single problem with my ST, never let me down once, the MPG is quite shocking though, and is as bad as you have heard  :embarassed:

hello mate
i had a st2 before my gti and i miss it. it is an amazing car although the fuel economy is really bad-i averaged about 220 miles to a tank but with the gti i average about 270 miles. it sticks like u wouldnt believe and it sounds so amazing whne u put ur foot down and hear that turbo kick in. even the missus misses that. inside it cant compete with the gti but the recaros are better than the gti. a great car. if u get one u wont regret it.

i would say the mpg on the 3.2 quattro will be better than the ST , as above though they do sound very nice

Well the 3.2 averages low twenties.

Cruising at 80 on the motorway I could never get it over 25mpg, though she reckons she see's it a little higher than that.

She doesn't do mega mileage about a 20 mile round trip to work each day and thats mainly A roads, but as her sisters just had a baby she wants to drive back to Swansea from Leamington more regular so its that journey she really wants to get cheaper.

The the fuel and taxman would ruin the fun factor of the Focas too!

my ST averaged 19 mpg , motorways at 80 would be about 25 ish, on a long efficient drive (no stop/ starts or traffic etc) i could hit 30 if i was very lucky, its deffo not a cheaper option imo

Wo wow wo!!!!!
I get the impression from this thread that people are suggesting that the Fiesta ST or the Focus ST-3 is almost up there with the GTI

thanks 182_Blue, there the figures I suspected and it was that and the lack of a DSG system that stopped me considering one when I got the Golf.

But that price is very tempting at £7K below list.

Well I've never driven either, though I did leave a Fiesta ST for dust this morning.

I do think a white Focus with blue side stripes would look pretty cool though.

It was the DSG, Tax, Fuel and boot for the dog that made me choose the Golf, not particularly its appearance, nor can I say have I been that impressed with its handling during my first few weeks of ownership. Overall though its a good package.

It was the same for my mate.  The boot for his dog is redundant now she's stopped nagging him and started doing his ironing.  He lets her sit in the front now.

Just to clarify, wasn't looking to start an ST vs GTI thread.

If she was being offered a Brand new GTi for £13.5K it would be a no brainer she'd go for it and thats the point, even though she's being offered it at 65% of list price she and I are both unsure she should go for it.

I think that in itself highlights what a better overall proposition the GTI is, but when you look at the Focus ST deal in the context of this deal its a hell of a car for £13.5K.

PMSL

Whilst my dog is 7 stone and 5ft, he still really is just a dog. I was tempted to get another 3 Series Coupe, but couldn't bear the thought of his muddy paws all over the carpet and leather seats. So I knew I needed a hatchback.

Quite interested to see what this Mitsubishi Evo Hatchback thing is going to turn out like.

I have to say when I test drove the Focus ST I was really impressed. The only reason I didn't buy one is cause I got a good deal on the GTI even though the ST was quite a bit cheaper.

I would recommend the ST to anyone.

ST would be worth looking at accept for very high fuel costs and shocking depreciation values.Ok if your leasing but not worth if its your own hard earned.
Title: Re: Any previous Focus ST owners
Post by: Rollini on 10 April 2008, 13:04
Fuel consumption was rubbish (200-220 for the tank) but the car itself was very nice (fun fun to drive and listen to) - 13.5k seems a decent price (thats about £6k below list?) i managed to shop around on the internet and get a new non import ST-2 for £16.5 just over 2 years ago.
Depreciation was high when i went to sell it last year, also is it about time a new shape Focus came out? would that hurt the value of buying the current shape now?

You look at the residuals though they are crap! :sick:06 plate st,s are going for 13k.They are common as muck and far to "chavvy" for me

I have an ST as my current car, its fantastic, very quick, very well built, 5 cylinder sounds great and would recommend it to anyone.. but as with any performance car the mpg is low.. mine shows average of 21.. but who cares? you don’t buy one to be frugal.

this is probably i bit controversial but i test drove allot of cars including the new golf but still chose this..

for 13.5k its a right deal!
Title: Re: Any previous Focus ST owners
Post by: R32UK on 10 April 2008, 17:53
I think at that price its hard to say no!! but if you look at the full picture your getting the usual staff discount + a further discount (due to the new focus coming out). Will this be echoed in the resale value?? its alot of car for your money.... but if you take into account the extra your spending on petrol, and the depreciation it might not sound so great... its worth doing the maths.

Remember its not about how much the car costs. Its about how much it costs YOU over the period you have it

thats the only reason to buy a car in the first place dude... but at some point you have to draw a line as to how much you can spend. thats where working with the total amount a car will cost you, rather than how much it initially costs you is a better way of looking at it! :nerd:

most people that buy on Privelage scheme sell there car a year later and break even or make money, so from that point of view its a good choice, even dealers will give you back what you have paid if your cute enough

while this is true, i have seen 06 plate GTis going for just over 13k, when you consider with a few options that would have been over 23k (not alot of dealer discount either when i tried ) thats a 10k loss, the ST would have been got for 14.5 -17.5 k (Dependant if st1-st3) and there still selling for 13k( i was offered 13k PX for my 06 plate) like you say, that makes less of a loss than the GTI

By the sounds of it, if your looking for a drivers car, then forget the focus Sanitary towel, doesnt handle as well as the GTi, Stick dsg to the options and you have a car that'll match the performance aswell.
Although looking at this thread, people have already tryed to perswade you to go vw rather then anything the Ford is offering. TBH you'd best off in the ford focus/fiesta owners clubs asking this question.

doesnt handle as well as the GTi ??? says who?

i doubt that most people could push it to its limits on a public road.

probably never even driven one, not for any length of time, my ST handled just as well as any GTi that i have driven, and tbh when remaped it would be quicker than most remaped GTis (not including ed30)

it is, slower round a track and proven several times, i sugest you watch some videos on youtube to but you right. ive driven one and thought it was crap in comparision.

when modding is bought into it, then rule book tends to go out of the window 182_blue

oooh oooh oooh have been dying to tell someone about my encounter with an ST yesterday evening.. thought this might be the best place for it.

I over took a black ST on the way home yesterday, as I was in a little bit of a rush. Obviously the ST owner didnt like this one bit.. so decided he was going to start driving like a tit. Pulling out then in.. really giving it some very close to my bumper. I let him get on with it to start with... but after a while it was getting a bit silly as there was no way he could get past (and its not like I was going to let him either). Anyway as we approached a set of lights (2 lanes) there is a very short stretch before a second set of lights. The right lane is for going right only. Whilst the left lane goes straight on.. and the lights are usually green.

As I approached the lights there was a crappy metro in the left lane so I jumped over to the right (knowing I would be able to beat him). Mr ST decided this would be his opportunity to really give it some. So as the lights changed to green, I decided I would sit tight for a couple of seconds.. just enough to let Mr Metro get a nice head start. After a few seconds, I floored it, and looked back to see the guy driving the ST with his jaw hanging open as I simply left him for dust. He looked to be trying his hardest to keep up but I would say that after a space of 100m he was about 4car lengths behind!! I obviously made it infront of the Metro to continue my journey home. Mr ST was probably sat behind Mr Metro for the next 2 miles (secretly wishing he had saved up a little more to get himself a VW )

R32UK,

To be fair (and I did until very recently own an ED30  so I am not biased towards Ford at all!), the argument/discussion here is whether the ST @ £13.5k is a good deal, comparing it with your £23 -26k 4WD R32 is not really fair is it

All I would say is that you get what you pay for (VW oooze quality) but in the current climate, resale values are shocking, even on GTIs (ED30 inc!).  So I reckon at 13k the ST is a bargin

I'm a big fan of the ST, it was the main rival for the gti when i bought it a couple of years back.  It didnt quite do enough for me, i could get one for 15k brand new as opposed to the golf where there was a big waiting list and no discount.  In the end i decided stick with what i had or buy what i really wanted, so a GTI it was.  After seeing the fuel consumption, im rather glad i gave it a miss

Well she decided against the Focus ST as the runnning costs didn't look like being any cheaper than the 3.2 Audi, so whilst it was a brand new car vs a used one it wasn't meeting the brief.

She took a test drive in the Fiesta ST and suffice to say she was very unimpressed with the cabin quality. Plus the dealer offered her a shocking part ex price £3k below parkers part ex price so she's not going with either of them for now.
