I have a 6 month old ed30 that has started to get this grinding noise when turning steering wheel lock to lock at low speeds, although seems to go away the more mileage I do.
I have read with interest the steering rack issue and note some comments that it might not have been the rack at fault and that it only affected early cars???
I seem to have the issue with mine and it's a 2008 model!!!!
Does anyone know if there's a fix for this yet or is this going to be another one moment its here the next its not scenario?
I must admit though, I've been off this week and the car hasn't been driven as much, normally do about 600 miles a week compared to about 150 so far this week, perhaps this has something to do with it?
Do I really have to phone the stealers? :undecided:
-
yes
new rack under warranty
-
I've noticed this occasionally on mine too recently (also 6 month old ED30)
I can only hear it very slightly in the multistorey when applyng lots of lock quickly .. more of a slight, constant "scraping" noise.
It's not very noticebale and it is'nt getting any worse
Think I'll wait for the 1st service and see what dealer says then
-
I actually noticed a grinding noise whilst parking earlier in the week... mines is only 3 months old and 1800miles...
hmmm "paranoia sets in"
-
hmmm "paranoia sets in"
I think you're right  if I was'nt aware of the steering rack issue I probably would'nt give it a second thought
Mine sounds very similar to how a brake disc sounds the first time you brake after washing the car ?
Is that what yours sounds like ?
-

Pretty much although mine does sound creaky when you turn the steeering wheel slowly while stationery?????
My only issue with the stealers is the amount of time they might need the car for and after reading some members stating that their steering rack noise was still there after being replaced, makes you think it might not even be that???
I am just loathed to let the stealers make money out of my car through the warranty ultimately at my expense because I won't have my car for a couple of days, does that make sense?
-
Yes exactly like it! I was thinking its maybe something lose/rattling (ie the brake dust cover thing that sits behind the discs etc), the brakes were certainly very very clean and warm i can assure you ;)
I have tried to make it do it again but its intermittent.
I dont see it being too much of a problem, if it annoys me i may make the effort for a dealer visit but id rather not
-
Oh dear - even on 2008 models VAG still haven't got their arses in gear and sorted this out  I don't fully understand as racks are being replaced and noises are going away - why is this not in production (if indeed it is a different rack!)
Telboy, I know it's a pain in the arse to get it into the dealers but think of the money you spent on the ED30 - it should be perfect and there should not be such annoying creaks and scratching noises. I understand your reluctance about getting the work done - not sure if you have read my previous posts, but just to recap (not wanting to put you off either):
- Told VW it was the steering rack based on info from this forum and also a friend with MK2 TT who had same noise and Audi replaced rack
- Stealer said it was suspension travel - replaced coils
- Cocked up and ordered wrong coils, car stayed in overnight (probably outside on the forecourt!!!)
- They then decided it was the steering rack (figured this may be because they could get a rack quicker than a set of coils - they never did explain the change of approach - they probably came on this forum )
- Another full day without GTI once part in - they never rang me so rang at 5pm and they said rack was replaced but it wasn't "playing ball" on the 4 wheel alignment
- Fourth day finally picked it up - noise gone
- Few days later, noticed my Monza's were all scratched
So, not sure how reputable your dealer is but best to check they have done steering rack replacement, if so take car down, get them to hear the noise and if they mention suspension parts, go elsewhere because they haven't got a clue.
If you do take it for the rack, inspect your car and get them to agree to the current "state" - highlight any known scratches, especially on the wheels. Either this or live with it - it annoyed the hell out of me. I'm trying a different dealer for any future service and warranty work.
-
i have to say mine is slightly (stress slightly) noisy, but dont want to leave the car at the dealers tbh !!!, i will live with it, its vcertainly no noisier than the wifes fiesta
ps what happens if you dont get it replaced ?
-
Don't know long term effects of not replacing it - I was told it was not dangerous in anyway, just means less people get it fixed and VAG continue cranking out cars with stupid noises  I think the other downside is anyone looking for a Golf and reads forums such as this will probably know about the problem and maybe you will get some bartering hassle when privately selling - especially out of warranty. As I said before I paid a lot of money for my GTI and I don't want the experience dampened by such noises - which is why I'll pursue the stealer on most things I feel are "faults" - saying this I doubt a perfect car will ever be built and there are a few thing you can live with -people just have different annoyance factors

I hear you Kermit, just like you have always had more problems after car being in at a stealers!!!
Have booked it in for next week although it's not making the noise now and I'm starting to think it's because I've been on holiday and not been using the car???
I have heard that no long term damage can be expected if left although it does need looking into.
At least the cars still under warranty so it will be sorted. I still think it's something to do with the brakes moving and making the grinding noise while on full lock.
Will see how it goes next week.

My car has a ticking/creaking/groaning noise when turning left hand lock. Stealer looked at it, and new rack required, car due into dry dock next Friday to have a new rack fitted.
The car is a Ed 30 MY08, registered 12.11.08.
Stealer admitted this has been going on since 05, he has even started checking New cars in his showroom, and sorting where required.
Loders in Yeovil, have been great about this, lots of communication, letting me know where they are with VAG, and immediate courtesy car offer, and I must say it is about time.

when was your car registered ? LOL
-
Interesting guys, I documented my steering rack problems and feeble attempts to fix it last year elsewhere on the forum, after changing most of the front end of the car, a 'modified rack' was fitted and immediately fixed the problem.
So like previous comments, if there really is a modified rack, rather than just a new one that is not faulty, how come late MY cars are still afflicted by this problem.
http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=32092.0
-
Right so...., was the reference re: "the problem is on ELSA and its reference is 317/06". From here any dealer can see that a modified rack needs to be fitted and all the information relating to the issue." valid?
If so presumably its easy for a stealer to look up the database and determine if your car is one of the affected vehicles...my sept 05 (55) GTi does creak a little on full left lock. I think I will mention this, last thing I need is to wait until it goes out of warranty in September then have to affect an expensive repair.
-
No they stated that ELSA service code was invalid, but you never can tell with these guys, for 6 months they point blank refused to accept that it was the rack, until they finally had no option but to fit one, then it was a case of 'well that was surprising, not seen any issues with them before'
complete muppets

I'm getting my car checked by two dealers just in case one of them try to fob me off, interesting to note Yeovil VW being so helpful, hoping my local VW dealer will be too. Problem with mine seems to be that it only happens after the car has cooled down about half an hour after driving??? At least though I can now replicate the niose and it sounds like you described so will no doubt be one of a fair few having a new rack fitted within the next couple of weeks!!! Bit gutted especially as the new racks seem to fix the issue, if this was the case why on earth didn't VW put the better rack into production!!!
-
Shooot I noticed my steering had goe heavy a few weeks ago at low speeds. No noises as far as I know. But I thought maybe it was because the steering was cold (or something along those lines :embarassed:)... It appears this problem is a little more common that I originally thought.
-
R32, that was one of the symptons I had, the steering went really heavy on lock, almost felt like flat front tyres, then lightened up as the wheels come back towards straight on.
-
mine does this, but very intermittentely, maybe I should get it sorted, mines an MY 07

The last thing I wanted was to have to take it to a dealer. I have resisted doing so since it went in for the creeking door seals and came back with the cabin covered in some white cack. So now I have to have them look at the steering rack, temp sensor, and rear door alignment. They wanted the car for 4 days to look at the temp sensor... they are gonna want it for 2 weeks if I give it to them for that lot!!!

I agree R32, most stealers are a complete waste of time and generally the car is in for much longer than it is truely needed and always ends up with marks/damage that wasn't there before! Like you though mine has to go in and is going in tomorrow and I'm hoping they can decided what is needed same day so I can have the car back and rebook once the parts are in. I'm also going to take my digital camera and take a few shots of the alloys and along the side profile of the car, ask the dealer to verify the condition of the car as very good!
It's such a shame we have to go to these lengths, however I have yet to meet a dealer that really cares about our £25/30k cars

I know exactyl what you mean!!! the last time I got my car back it was in such a mess i vowed never to take it back to those knob jockeys again. They even managed to get me angry about the way they parked it. The drivers door was 6 inches from another car... and you could clearly see marks on the other car where my door had been opened.
-
Just been out in the car today and low and behold, no noise!!!!
It's booked in tomorrow to be investigated!!!
Question is, the niose was more obvious during our recent hot spell we had down in the South where temperatures were averaging about 16??? Would the steering rack be effecting by temperature as it doesn't have fluid, just works on an electric motor???
The reason I say the temperature thingy is today the average temperature is, cold!
Could temperature really having a bearing on the steering issue?
-
I noticed mine played up when we had very cold weather :undecided:
Sorry that probably doesnt help at all
-
tbh i heard mine the day after i picked it up, and it hasnt been very loud at all since ?, perhaps it was because mine had been sat around ?
-
I’ve just noticed a very slight creaking when parking the car, subtle... not grinding... more of a ticky sound... it that makes sense.
-
UPDATE,
Been to dealer today and they are 99.9% sure it's not the steering rack as common faults if it is the rack are;
Mainly makes a long grinding niose when on left lock, noise sounds central in the engine bay and steering can appear heavy when on left lock.
My symptoms are light ticking niose when turning from left lock to right lock, intermitent, sometimes makes a scraping sound that goes away if foot placed on brake, VW diagnose replacement strut mounts will sort this???? :undecided:
I went on and on about the rack and they wouldn't budge as they didn't think mine had the right niose!!!! Must admit I went to a good dealer who spent a lot of time on the car and even located the noise by placing their hands on top of the strut mounts where they found it made the clicking niose, common fault apparently that can sometimes be mistaken for the rack??? :undecided:
Not sure myself and feel this won't be my only visit to sort this out somehow???
-
havnt others had new struts done and its not cured it ?, tbh i guess the dealer gets paid whatever so no reason they shouldnt be right ?, hope it sorts it mate
-
still effort for them to do it. and if their busy...
i took mine in, duno what they did, didnt change anything, and its not as bad, but still there... i not been bothered to take it back for it yet, its not major.. may book it in when im on holiday
-

Yep totally agree, I must admit others have had this done without it curing the problem although as this dealer pointed out, not all of the creaking style noises are down to the rack, however I'm with most of the forum on this, that a new rack is the only answer!!! Will hopefully get a second opinion tomorrow.
-
Telboy, obviously not every noise will be the rack, but I went through 2 sets of top mounts, wheel bearings, then both front strut assemblies, then the front springs were supposedly incorrectly torqued at manufacture, even though they were removed and replaced to change the struts!!! So guess that means the stealer re-torqued them incorrectly at strut change, lower control arms, track rod ends, then finally the rack.
Ahh....the rack......then the noise stopped

look at it this way you get loads of new parts for free
hope it gets sorted for you mate

182's right, I got a new front end for free

Hi Telboy,
My metallic sounds started this morning... only 4-weeks old and 750 miles.
It only started after driving in the salty, gritty snow on Sunday... that’ll teach me to go the the Breakfast Club at Goodwood. Still seeing a convertible Maclaren uner 5 inches of snow was fun.
Spent 5-hours yesterday really cleaning off the salt and crud... I wonder whether any muck has got into the suspension area. I was very lucky... no damage/chips to bodywork!
The noise is a ticking sound on left and right lock, not bad sounding... just weird metallic ticky, ticky sounds. If that makes sense!!??
I guess you’ve been to Breeze in Poole... I’ve always found them to be helpful! I’ll be getting Loders in Dorchester to investigate if it gets worse.
Keep us posted... cheers Hotrod

Yours sounds just like the strut mounts, very similar in sound to mine. Had two dealers look at the car and one even showed me the top of one of the mounts was rusted and got me to place my hand on the top of the mount so that I could feel the ticking sound. This is very different to the rack noise/problem which is more of a long grinding niose while on left lock. I took it to both Breeze in Poole and Heritage in Salisbury, both very good tbo, know the Salisbury service manager very well.
The strut mounts are prone to letting in water, the new strut mounts apparently are sealed a lot better and are a lot less likely to let in water, grit etc. I pm'd Mat ed30 as he had the same issue and low and behold his noise went away as soon as the struts were replaced. Fingers crossed on this one!!!!!!!!!!
There is of course no guarantee that replacing the mounts will cure this, however it is booked in next Weds for it's service and strut mount replacement!!!
Will let you know how it goes mate
-
Thanks Telboy,
I’m at Loders on Sat, so I’ll get them to check out the strut mounts... cheers buddy!
-
Hi Telboy,
Been to Loders (Sat) to check out the metallic sounds. Popped it up on the lift and had a poke about with the mechanic, seems it was a panel of metal extrusion under the engine bay shielding the steering components. When the wheels were turned something was pulling on this aluminum panel, we gently twisted the panel and no more sounds... excellent.
They were aware of the rusty strut mounts issue... but this was not the case with me.
Hope all goes well on Wednesday... cheers... Hotrod

Well I'm pleased to report that it was the strut mounts after all that, no noise at all now, well pleased!
To all those experiencing noise through the steering, it won't always be the rack and I understand the GTI's are prone to the mounts going, quick 1.5 hour job and all will be ok!!!!!

They were able to isolate the news and feel it by placing their hands on top of the strut mounts, was like a slight popping noise rather than a grinding noise. Plus the top of the strut mounts were rusty, not good after just 6 months  although apparently a common problem.
So they replaced the strut mounts with the newer design which I understand is sealed better so shouldn't rust???
Bottom line is the niose has gone and my car is back to normal, now all I need to do is start playing with the extra power through my bluefin

Oh yes, I'm keeping up with cars that I thought would never be possible, but then with about 230bhp/ton (more than a c32 amg and old style m3) I'm not at all surprised and yes like yours, its defo getting quicker by the day, not forgetting that on 99ron fuel it will go even quicker still
-
hehe, yeh im really starting to enjoy the ed30 now

Hi Telboy... I’m glad you’re all sorted, there are some good dealers out there who genuinely want to help... cheers Hotrod

Cheers Hotrod, good to hear yours was sorted too, funny that small bits and bobs on the car can make so much noise,...hope you're cars going ok and still leaving a smile on your face after every time you drive it,.....??? I can't remove my smile after having bluefin, the car is simply

Hi Telboy,
Yeah lovin’ it! All run in now!
Just had it detailed and fitted the rear LEDs. Started a new topic with a link to Detailing World... shame it’s now raining.
Keep smiling... Hotrod
