hello there!!!
im gona be starting on my interior soon and i'm stuck for ideas. At the moment im running mk3 vr6 seats front and back, stereo subs etc. Nice to drive, stick my tunes on and bomb it down the b-roads. I love the look of a stripped out caged track slag and im tempted to go down this route. Is there such a thing as an in-between?
I've got some nice rs turbo seats sitting in the garage but to get em re-trimmed, plus the door cards plus the rear bench will cost a fortune. Im thinking about getting some buckets, a painted cage and a carpeted out rear with my subs still in? wat do you all think?
Stripped out

You could always keep some nice comfortable but sporty seats in the front (nothing too heavy), take out the rear seats and carpet the rear, so it looks like one nice bit of carpet (not the old bit with holes for mountings) and then build a nice small and light (fibreglass, not MDF) mounting for 2 speakers, a small sub and an amp.
IE: the stripped out look but without being all cold and metal.

Take all the junk and as much of the interior as you can out from the inside of your car (including the big, fat, dumb subs) and take it out for a drive. You will be amazed at the difference losing 100kg of tat will make to the handling and responsiveness of your car.
The easiest way of improving performance is 'adding lightness'.
If you want the car for driving enjoyment take out the stereo. If you want to listen to music get a good home stereo system. If you want to drive listen to the engine and car. You'll get more out of it and drive better, as you will be less distracted.

what he said!

yea i took the golf out for a spin with no interior before and it seriously went!! But i use the car everyday and i reckon it could get a bit annoying after a bit, as i dont drive like a tit all the time...
i dont know what to do!!! i like sounds and my beats but i know how much it weighs and im lugging all that weight around with me all the time... :undecided:

Care to explain?

I think he was implying that subs are big fat and dumb... which I kind of agree with tbh - in a car anyway.... too much weight, far too much bass and often not backed up with enough component speakers.....
strip it all the way!!!!!!

I've got a pretty neat ice install at the moment and it really kicks, and sounds soo crisp. Alpine HU, Alpine 6" comps, Jbl 1000 mono, 2 old school subs run with 0gauge. Its not as if i go around town with my bass turned up full with my windows down.
Like i said i seriously love my sounds so im planning of combining the two. Tunes with stripped out theme and a roll cage.
You cant beat a late summer afternoon blatting down the b-roads with your fav tune!!
-
fair one, I had an mtx 10" sub in my mk2 - im not totally against them just a generalization about peoples over obsession with subs in car audio installs.... I want an alpine head unit!!!
Im stripping my mk3 from the front seats back _ ie so it still feels like a 'normal' car sat in the front...il take some pics once I have finished at the weekend
-
if you love your tunes then keep em then. if you dont you will probably regret taking it all out. could you live without the subs though?
going back to your 90's look theme. i remember my school/college max power days and there were quite a few caged up cars with nice neat installs in a pannelled out rear.

I think people have explained it pretty clearly.
If you add weight such as sub-woofers and component speakers then you will blunt the performance of your car fairly swiftly. For me that will dent the enjoyment of a favourite road pretty quickly, as it also dulls the car's responses, too.
Either you want some sort of rolling nightclub, or an every day car to enjoy driving, or something stripped out which allows you to focus on driving, rather than listening to music. It's simply not possible to listen to music AND drive quickly and safely on a B-road. For a start you won't be able to hear what the car is doing - engine and suspension.
Thing is different people's ideas of a good drive vary - maybe you're someone who likes driving like a big girl, rather than driving the car properly, in which case you might as well put your sound system in and you shouldn't need a roll-cage (unless your music distracts you that much).
I guess my point is go one way or the other, don't try to do both - it looks chavvy and dysfunctional.

lewis i seem to remember it aswel. Boarded/carpeted rear with twin subs and a polished roll cage i thought it looked the dogs. I also remember a few years back there was a red mk1 gti in pvw, it had 16's, slammed stripped out rear, polished roll cage and a sound system. Oh it also had a fit bird stood next to it! I can try and dig out the mag but its in the loft somewhere
Thanks diamond i will take your answer and keep it in the back of my mind. I understand what your saying but maybe as an everyday car completly stripping out everything maybe way to much. Although i might ditch the subs but keep the front comps
-
thats probably the best compromise. previous owner of der panza loved nothing more than b road thrashing with metallica blaring out. he just has front components as a compromise

I run a small sub n amp ( cheers again billy ) and the weight really aint an issue compared to the 20 stone of man fat behind the wheel

2nd thoughts strip the b!tch!
-
yea i have done!!! only got 1 seat in it now and i've took loads and loads of wireing out. It weighs a ton!! Been chucking it around corners todays and im liking it!! Im thinking a track car build thread coming on!!!
-
yeah im gonna strip my mk2 8v gti, roll cage it, ARBs, strut braces, lower 50mm and polybushes all round, get the slag on the track
-
The sun shines on the righteous and they aren't carrying subs around (unless it's a Sub-type roll being digested in their stomach).
Leave the passenger seat in - no point excluding those wishing to ride shotgun now, is there?
-
You'll love it stripped out.
For at least a week.
Then it will slowly but surely do your head in, until you take your first motorway journey, when your eardrums will actually explode with pain and irritation at the noisy, rattly, clunky golf you have just created.
Believe me, ive been there.
