That is the question.
I'll be selling the mk2 at the end of the year to buy a mk4, either the PD150 or a 20VT...
I'll be 19 with 3 years NCB and I've been quoted about £1250-£1300 for a year's insurance standard and about £1500 with alloys, lowered and exhaust/induction.
Now I really don't do many miles at all - Maybe.. 6-7k a year? And that would be pushing it.
Is having the petrol 1.8t better than the diesel by a large enough margin (if at all?) to justify the lower MPG?
What are these engines like tunability-wise?
And any other info regarding the differences of these two (I think there's differences other than engine between these two?)

The pd150 is nearly as fast as the 1.8T & gives much better mpg. BUT it s a diesel!
The 1.8t is quicker, more tunable & cheaper to buy.
At the end of the day its up to you!
How have you got 3 years NCD if you're only 19 :shocked:

First year of insurance they gave me a "bonus year" which everywhere I rang up for quotes accepted :) So come renewal I'll have three years. Only problem is I can't do online quotes accurately as most of them come back saying I don't have the right amount for the time I've been driving.
What kind of mpg figures for the two would I be looking at? May have to sit and work out the amounts in fuel it will cost me..

I know with new cars the difference in the cost of buying derv vs petrol engined models is only recouped if you do a minimum of 12k miles a year. You still pay a premium for the used mk4 dervs - especially for the 150 - so I think you would struggle to save enough on fuel to justify the initial outlay.

for that sort of yearly mileage you'll be better off getting the 1.8T, whilst you'll be crying about the mpg difference you can get a 1.8T for half the price of a TDI 150

in my TDI 150 I normally get 53~57 mpg from a tank eg 550 miles from a tank
not sure what the 1.8T's get but my mate who owes one says he's lucky to get 350 from a tank

All dephends really. I like to have my tax cheaper and insurance a bit cheaper. But then there is the cost of the diesel which are more.
My tip is to test drive both. See what you like.

For the ammount of miles you are going to be doing I cant see the point in getting the TDI 150. It would take you ages (cant be bothered to work it out) to pay back the extra money you have forked out to buy the derv in the first place. My tip is to get the 1.8T.

But surely this initial extra cost for the derv makes more sense when you come to sell. When he comes to sell it it will still be worth more than a petrol, maybe even more the way car tax and insurance are going, it will be even more desirable to the buying public.
I'd still buy a 1.8 t petrol though. :smiley:

yeah you can easily pick up a 1.8T for £3K and the TDI 150's normally start around £6K
this is down to the TDI 150 being 2001 + so they are all going to be younger, and hold their value much better than the petrols.

umm dificult and deoends how much ya wanna pay on insurance at 19 i wouldnt get anything that cost me that much on insurance

no i guess not but why pay so much you can jus be sensible and get a smaller engine till you do get a lil older an buil up nco's
plus the money you save on insurance can buy you a nice set of rims :P

I just couldnt take it anymore. My Clio was driving me insane plus I was paying £650 for my Clio so for £350 more a year I could have the Golf. I would never pay more than £1000 on insurance on a car (in fact I lie, I paied £1011 for last years insurance, gone down LOOOOADDDDSS now as I turned 21 :D)

Well I paid £720ish this year for my 1.8 Driver mk2 and I kind of want to sell that at the end of the year as it's a super low milage car and I'll be depreciating it's value if I drive it for too long!
I'm actually after a mk4 with leather interior so I'm thinking if I wanted a good condition PD150 with leather, etc. I'm going to have to fork out alot! My maximum to spend is about 5500 at the very max.
If someone can give me average MPG figures for the 1.8t I'll work out how much I'd save, etc. :)
So it seems although the 1.8t seems to be better in alot of people's eyes and faster, the PD150 has oodles of torque. What's so the advantages/values of having a load of torque but not as much bhp? Only cars I've driven have been my 1.4 Seat Ibiza and my 1.8 Driver mk2 golf so I wouldn't know!
I'm a bit weary about going to test drive some as I have visions of being told to f*** off when they see a 19 year old wanting to try a 150bhp car out.. But it's worth a try!

if you're only doing 6-7K a year then it wil take ages to make your money back by buying the TDI 150. You're better off going for the 1.8T; more of them about too.

i know mate :sad: i'm putting it down to the fact it was my first day back in work after the Easter break!! :grin: so in a way yeah i have banged my head...against a brick wall dealing with my bosses :laugh: :laugh:

get the 1.8t, they are pritty good on fuel tbh and are fast. you can tune them for very little too to around 200bhp which is nothing to be sniffed at :smiley:

So I heard something about on the diesels a clutch replacement is very expensive.. What is the 1.8t like in terms of parts pricing and general maintenance/repair costs? I'm a part time student and I don't want to have to spend the money I do have coming in all on keeping the car on the road!
It's looking very favourably in the side of the 1.8t if thats the kind of milage I'd be getting :) About the same as my mk2 Driver!

i was only 19 when i got a 99 1.8t and paid 1200 as a named driver on my dads insurance. Now im 24 and drive a mk2 8v as i had to grow up and buy a house (no offence to anyone else, im just bitter and jealous cos i miss my 20v) :cry:
