Ok, what does your standard exhaust sound like, are they quite loud or is it my ultra sensitive hearing
-
Mine sounds pants...
I sense that there is an engine trying to pop a little, but nothing comes out :(
-
I know what you should do :lipsrsealed: :lipsrsealed:
-
so quite loud then (not in a good way), i reckon its louder than my ST, so much for refinement LOL
-
my zorst was almost silent when i got the car, but now after about 2000 miles its louder. would not say loud tho
-
What does your standard exhaust sound like.......are you serious ??
-
Would'nt call mine loud :undecided:
Sounds "meaty" at idle, and tootling round the Multi-storey, but apart from that it's fairly quiet on the open road.
-
do you have a different car from me ?
In no way is the ED30 on mine loud , in fact I wish it had more presence than it does.
Outside yes it makes a nice subtle sound , inside I barely notice it.
In fact in general driving the tyre and wind roar are far more prominent.
Def a better sound at 6000 miles.
Personally I would want a Milltek for more feedback. Maybe I have a duff ED30 ?
Had a friend round on Sat with his RS4 avant , now thats 'feedback'
-
perhaps just me then, i do get ultra picky tbh, just thought it was a little loud tbh, i noticed it on the test car i drove too
-
My standard gti is also rather loud when i press the loud pedal. I love it, just how a gti should sound to me. Roars when gunning it but can be almost silent if you drive carefully. Makes a nice burble when idling

yeh thats it, i guess i thought it would be quieter than the ST
-
I have to say i like the exhaust note on my ed30, its not silent and its not intrusive, just right for me.
-
as mine has done about 2500 miles it has changed and does sound better.
-
Done just over 8000 miles in my Ed 30 in about 12 months. Exhaust sounds great  very growly just about right not too intrusive  very good in tunnels or under bridges etc.

I would agree with Mrtibbs. Just crank the window down a little.
Theres just a low growl when you need it. I would say the the there is not much diff. in the noise level between the standard exhaust and a miltek system ( after hearing Hurdys). However, you could tell it was "breathing" easier, in the way it reved.

So far I must say the ED30 engine/exhaust sound is very disappointing. Certainly sounds like a diesel at start up! After 6 odd years in my V6 4-Mo I am missing the Nascar rumble and whine... hopefully in time it will loosen up.
However, loving the turbo punch, it will take a while to get used to it...

If you want something better than stock get yourself a Milltek, sounds better and will give you a little popping if you want  not to mention release a little power.
-
My exhaust sounds pretty pathertic, but then I came from an unresonated Milltek on an R32 so anything sounds feeble compared to that.
When I went out on a test drive of an Ed30 the one I took out had a sporty sound to it, much more than mine has.

The more miles that I've got on the car the better it sounds
-
Not an Ed30 but my GTi is a bit quiet for me.

Ive thought mine sounded a bit 'rattly' on start up, very similar to a diesel. Wasnt expecting that!! Should have listened more on the drive although it not the end of the world.
-
Ther're all like that pal
-
lol, its amazing that VW can make a petrol sound like a diesel, c'mon i mean just how do you manage that LOL
-
Go listen to an evo at idle then, its a tone quieter but just as "diesel"-like

why ?
-
Both are direct injection like a Diesel

yeh i know, but why would i want to go listen to one ?

If you want to hear how an exhaust should really sound then I am happy to give my loud pedal a little punch for ya 'all

think of the Fuel though , My ST sounded pretty nice though
-
You commented on how VW manage to make petrols sound like diesels...
If you listen to an evo, yes the exhaust sound is oh so very bassy and perfectly toned to suit its performance... The engine at idle is just the same as the 2tfsi unit.
(Not having a go bud, just pointing out that VW's aren't exclusive to the tappety noise)
-
sorry chaps wasnt having a go either, just amazed that they sound like diesels LOL
-
Isnt the v6 engine quite tappety at idle also?
-

My cousin has an ST which he picked long before I got the .:R and I must admit that they do sound very nice... but did read somewhere breifly at the time that the noise is resonated into the cabin (think i got that right).
Outside i wouldnt expact them to sound just the same as the golf, but i have obviously never compared.
As for fuel... dont think the ST is that much less thirsty than the R32

At idle yes... altho believe it or not its often quite hard to hear the engine at idle, even when stood outside, not sure why that is. It sure as hell dont sound like a diesel though!!
What i find is that you can only hear the tappety noise in short bursts... is that normal??

Its just not a golf tho!!
-
granted, it is indeed quicker than a golf
-
bit of a bug bear with me this tappety sound,
my old v5 used to sound like a beast at idle and that was with a standard exhaust.
shame they couldnt do something with this engine to make it sound better.
-
The Milltek only makes it a little better at idle too. I thought is would burble more
-
My standard GTI is pretty quiet. Certainly doesn't have the lovely burble that my WRX had. But it sounds nicer than the diesel A4 I traded. :D
-
Does it sound louder or quieter than mine in the video below? At idle and full revs!

I've always thought the GTI had a nice exhaust note. My mates standard GTI certainly use too.. Couldn't here it in the car. But if you were outside the car or had the window down, it had a nice tone..
I hope my Ed30 (especially once mapped) will have a nice noise. On full chat too.. Otherwise a Miltek will be on order...
I still think the nicest sounding STANDARD Hot hatch whilst on the move has to be the Astra VXR.. Here's a couple of vids of my mates STANDARD VXR giving it a bit of beans..
