Title: Bloody rust....
Post by: Kermit on 15 March 2008, 21:16
Not sure of the correct terminology here but there is rust on the piece of metal that sits behind the wheel but in front of the disc break and calipers (the bit the wheel screws into) - has anyone else got this problem as it looks sh!te and seems to be getting worse?  Car is only 7 months old with 11K so is this something I can complain about and get rectified under warranty?

Also, while I'm on talking about rust - anyone got recommendations on how to keep the tail pipe nice and mint - mines looking a bit nasty at the moment and finding it difficult to get the crap off it.  Will a metal polish work?

Cool... let me know how you get on.  I'm in the stealers on Thursday so I might ring up on Monday and see.  I'll post the response.  I don't ever remember owning a car with such a problem.

my GTi had this, and dealer resprayed the hubs. My 2nd GTi also has this, only done 900 odd miles and rust is there. Dealer again has had this repaired under warranty with absolutely no questions.

I painted the hubs myself. Was looking at a 56 plate R32 today and it was the same.

WD40 gets your tail pipes nice and clean. The crud just wipes off

As everyone says rusting hubs are common, best thing to do is to paint them yourself with a tough metal paint. The best thing for the tailpipes is Meguiars NXT Metal Polish which you can get in Halfords, brings them up really nice and shiny

Doh! Really like the look of the AP's, would it be rude to ask how much they set you back, roughly of course!!!

....Er, I would have to shoot you afterwards because I was asked by AP not to say . I played a very minor part in their development for the Mk5 GTI and was rewarded generously. Their usual price is about £1,700 for a set of fronts - they fit both 17's and 18's Monzas.

Oh well then, time to sell an organ, pretty much the same price as Brembos then ?????

Any opinions on which suits the GTI the best?

Thread back on track

Unlikely that dealer will replace the discs under warranty unless the car is relatively new - cheap metal in discs these days and production cost cutting means they are always likely to rust, especially in a UK climate :embarassed: My discs are rusty and dealer wouldn't budge

Had the same issue with my old Boxster and as the brakes functioned properly, I only got them replaced when the inboard rears rusted badly on the disc surface.

I find Solvol Autosol takes care of the rear zorst tips no problem :smug: Just tear off a 2" x 8" piece of fabric and use a sawing action to clean/polish around each tip

If you've let your tailpipes go to the dogs (grimy with heat soak tarnishing?) thjen a little the "Solvol Autosol' simply won't do the job. You're not the only one who has had a job cleaning built up crap off your tailpipes, it's another 'GTI' quirk.

Try very fine sandpaper followed by wire wool (wire wool alone won't do it if it's bad) and then use a metal polisher (Solvol Autosol is fine at this stage).

The tailpipes won't stay clean but a weekly 3-5 minutes with the aforementioned method will keep them looking immaculate.

Or you could get these and find yourself becoming OCD with cleaning them every other day :embarassed:

Good tip! Mine are shot, megs and wd40 wouldnt even touch them on Saturday when I tried. Will give this a go.

Cool - thanks for all the replies- certainly some decent info - looks like I better invest in a few bits and bobs and get some decent elbow grease on the job - might do a before and after photo if I can be bothered

As for the hubs I'll let you know how I get on.

....Thanx

I love their stopping power too!!     - Five Star Awesome!

I visited a car wash today - No, don't panic!! Not a drive-through but a hand brush and handheld jet wash, just to get the main dirt off before a tender loving RR handwash with various scented products by Meguiar's. Anyroadup, I nearly got the small brush head stuck in the hole of one of my rear Monza 18's with standard brakes and knocked the caliper quite hard.

Driving away, the first time I braked it sounded like I had caught a tin can under the car! So I stopped and checked and saw nothing. Carried on and heard squeaking and rubbing. Had another inspection but couldn't see anything wrong. So I decided to go and test the brakes properly: Hard on (the brakes!!) at 90 - 20 mph, flip the paddles a couple of gearshifts and accelerate and do the same again. Although I made sure there weren't any other vehicles near me, a car well behind decided to stay even further behind!! Yes, those front AP brakes are faultless.

Had the car in the stealers today (4 new Monzas) - asked about the hubs and they said they can't rectify under warranty - they were having none of it

Anyone know of any dealers in the North west that replaced or sprayed the hubs as I think I'll be asking elsewhere

Just noticed my "bells" are gettin a wee bit orange as well!!
What's the best first course of action - elbow grease and a rub with what?

What's safe to use on that piece of the car?

Not a mark on my wheels but orangy bells

smooth hammerite will do it, or get some proper brake paint

It's kinda bummin me right out - I'm so fussy with cleaning my GTI and to have rusty bells is just sh*t!

To be honest I'm even paranoid about letting the dealer spray it

Anyone got a magic cloth that just wipes it all away

Post by: JoeGTI on 01 April 2008, 22:37
I tried spray painting mine with silver heat-resistant paint (only the rears though - my fronts seem pretty OK).
It was easier said than done I thought. Perhaps down to my total lack of DIY skills, but I found the paint "ran" easily, leaving some streaking... and it has already started to peel off and rust again!

Would I be better off using a small brush and some hammerite as others have suggested?

im not sure, it looks more whiter in the pics but looks just like grey primer in the flesh. they did the same to my 1st golf and even after a year there was no sign of any more corrosion coming through.Although this time they went abit OTT by doing the edges of the brake discs!.
