Title: what inspires you?
Post by: ...joe on 14 March 2008, 12:29
what inspires you to build/modify your car (if you do) are there any stand out cars that have made you want to go one step further, or to get that re-trim or re-spray?

for me the stance darren from g-werks gets on his cars is amazing while still being totally usable. and doing what i do i find i'm obsessed with interiors etc. weirdly one of my favourite golfs is pete carty's mk3 on the cover of PVW this month. i remember seeing it a few years ago at e38 and it blew me away. its not a car i'd want but something about it just impresses me.

Inspire is not really appropriate for me as I can't afford to mod my car other than the obligatory drop, zorst and rimz. So for me it's more a case of admire and fantasy "if I won the lottery I would do...." Also I'm more of an engine man than looks man so trick oily bits get me excited.

As for cars I have to say Joe yours is one of my faves and I'm looking forward to seeing it sometime this year and getting my lens on with it. I also really like the chap on ED38 with the eaton'd MKIII 8v, it's all a bit homebrew and I love that. Much as I dislike Stanton car style wise I like the fact that the guy is very much hands on and does most of it himself even if I think the end result looks sick (and not in a ed38 way!).

Photos of other peoples clean/painted Edition Ones with polished up RM/RS ! Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

What I really like though I guess is 'improvements' I can make to the cars performance and handling.
I like the way Mk2s drive and enhancing that or tailoring it to what I want is what I enjoy.

I do like show cars, but I can't think of any one car or thing which has had a big impact over any other.

A really well thought out car inspires me.  something no nonesense. built for a purpose i guess. the car i own now was a massive inspiration when i was prepping my last golf (in terms of engineering rather than looks). its nothing out of the ordinary though.

i also love to see really clean cars, no matter what make/model.

i really want to own something that bit special one day.
i prefer walking round the car parks at shows too - seeing what people are doing to cars they use regularly (i'm not saying all show cars are trailer queens here)

All the mk3 pi55takes make me want to finish the job vw failed on....
better handling, better looks and a bit more performance... my idea is to make a mk3 what vw should of done originally and not o.t.t!

or I will fit a propellor and go sailing to france  :lipsrsealed: :lipsrsealed:

when i had just got my mk1 there was a guy from holland i think with a gun metal type colour mk1, he kept it in a heated garage and it was always sooo clean, not sure he drove it but it looked unreal, he had even smoothed under the car and taken all the underseal off, it was real low on Ronal Turbo's! just made we want to sort my mk1 out, didnt want to go down his route but made me love the mk1 even more if you know what i mean?  :undecided:

there are a few mk3's on e38 that make me drool too!

Hmmm, well im inspired by brrrrrruumm noises, i just like going fast an havin cars that are low an mean (G60, lest we forget) hopefully my jetta will get there one day. It needs alot of work on the body an interior now the engines ok. Cant wait to just be able to drive it to shows an stuff, thats what inspires me really, turnin up an seein what everyone else has done since the last time an goin .....fook, better up it a bit!

With regards to the favorite cars, i really like Dan Allens MK1, Vaughns old G60, an not blowin smoke up grumpy arse but Joes Car, inspiring in that its a car iv actually followed the evolution of it an knowing the history an knowin that he hasnt just gone to all the names in the business an handed wads over, unlike some of the other 'unique' cars out there.

The joy for me is in finding that rare part in the scrappy, the pride i feel when someone compliments my car,the sense of accomplishment after a tricky repair/mod is completed and the thrill of driving a modern classic as it was meant to be driven.
As for inspiration i have more time for people who like myself do most of the work on their cars themselves and do so without a big fat chequebook in their hand than i do for those who have the aforementioned chequebook.
My final point could be taken the wrong way but it has to be said! I also love the feeling that i am part of this fantastic "scene"!!!
I am never happier than when on the way to/from a show i start to see other dubs,my right foot gets heavier and before i know it i am grinning like a fool!

Basic personalisation

People always ask why i spend money on my cars or change them or mess with them , i define it like this , when you buy a mobile phone , the first thing you do is set it up the way you like it , new wallpaper , personal ringtone , new colour scheme , the same with a house you never leave it decorated the same as the last person left it. Its all about stamping my identity on it. I do like show cars and cars that look good , but im always swayed in the motorsport direction , improve things faster , better brakes , handle better. Probably because i couldnt look after a pristine show car because im a bit lazy on the cleaning front

What inspires me?

Developing the ability in a car (or Transporter) to take people by surprise.

Last project - 2.2 Subaru Caravelle Syncro - whether it was making Land Rover driver's jaws hit the floor, or getting people to get out of the outside lane on a motorway to let me past, that was a lot of fun.

Current projects: T25 pick up with quattro engine - it looks skanky as hell, but the memory of seeing someone in a VR6 totally confused at the noise and speed is burnt into my memory.  The Golf Syncro - although it's stripped out inside it's something of a sleeper and I'm looking forward to having a slightly breathed-on motor added to the equation.

My Dad  Passed away last year and was into his cars. He wanted me to do something with mine.

In his memory I am

It maybe mainly chequebook, but I'm having sooo much fun doing the little bits that my skills will let me do. It's the details that matter and having a go at doing my own boot build (however good/bad it turns out!!).

Seeing so many show cars out there over the years is great - it shows that people aren't phased by what should or shouldn't be done and that they aren't afraid to go their own way. Sure scenes come and go, but dubs will live forever

i mod my car to make it the way i like it; yeah other people have done the same mods as me but to me they set the car off nicely whilst keeping it sublte  makes it all the more satisfying when you smoke some idiot in his posh car

i can appreciate show cars but enjoy driving too much to worry about if its got the tiniest spec of dirt on it

Driving past a dealership/garage and knowing that the skinned knuckles earned while struggling to maintain & repair my car on my own is worthwhile.

tell ya what inspires me, the fact that i have the chance to keep this already classic car running for another 20 years, if it be this mk2 i currently own or any other 1 i may get. theres somthing about a vw, there so playable. drive it, fix it, fix it again, and again. my mission atm is to fix all the bodges the previous owner has done (which i have nearly done). as said a couple of times, joes motor is a great insperation as it has been done so well. i would be prowd if my car was 1 day as mint as mr joes!

i find lookin at my car alot inspires ideas also.  hope that all makes sence!!

ive been kicking around the forum for about 2/3 years and i just like the way its organically evolved , changin a bit at a time and learning as you go along. Its got to be one of if not the most stunning cars on this forum - along with Blues its one of the first cars i remember reading about on the project sections.

well thats much appreciated! i'll admit in the early days of my project i did get quite a few pm's saying how much people enjoyed what i was doing but its always nice to know people have taken something from it. its kinda weird because i have learnt everything on my own, using my car as a test bed. so its funny when i've overheard people at shows etc assuming my car is the product of other peoples input. just goes to show if i can do it on a budget, so can others.

No arse licking just apreciation from fellow users and unlike a certain forum thats been mentioned alot round here lately ....

not picking on you here stu, but being honest peoples perception of the 'scene' is half the reason i've been asking a few questions really. see we all know each other on here fairly well. even if it is just through reading each others posts. i often think people get the wrong idea of what people on other forums are all about, e38 to name one.
having had the opportunity to work on some of the so called 'scene' cars and in doing so got to know the owners, they are just like the rest of us. have the same passion, if not more so, to push boundries and build the car they want. even if they haven't done the bodywork themselves or done the engine conversion, doesn't mean they didn't have the ideas, drive and vision to go through with their plans.
its almost like they are cursed with having been around for as long as they have, have got a name for producing nice cars and so on and they get branded as 'scene' and too big for their own boots. all of the people i've had the chance to get to know have, if anything, been more humble about they accolades bestowed on them.... unfortunately its the forums that create the bull sh!t and hype around them.

i think what i was trying to work out was that people seem to have strong opinions about ''the scene'' so i wondered how people were forming these opinions? now i wasn't looing to take the piss out of anyone or anything, i was genuinely interested.
for me the whole basis that we all own VW's makes us a scene, just like i'm sure train collectors have their own scene and their own views on it (for example). so i was wondering if people that aren't going to VW shows or reading the two biggest (well known?) VW magazines, do they have a different perspective of what they see the scene as, compared to someone who reads the mags and goes to the shows?

it was a comment by somone who is heavily into their VW's and who would seem to have a strong opinion of 'the scene' which got me thinking. it was about something they'd seen that they liked, as though it was the first time they'd seen it. now for me i was a bit surprised, as it was something that has been growing in popularity for easily 2 years, simply reading the odd magazine or going to the odd show would be enough to have noticed this trend, so it made me wonder where they were getting their views on the scene from. does that make sense?

i just sometimes see it as an easy option to blame 'the scene' for some trends, opinions etc that doesn't fit what one person is interested in. now being team grumpy, alot annoys me! however once you dig a bit deeper and ignore the morons on almost every forum, there is alot of people doing alot of good out there. its just that often the morons have the loudest voices and the highest post counts.

i don't really have a point to make, like i said i'm just interested to see where/how people form their opinions of the VW world we delve into. i'm sure if i asked people to decsribe the scene, there would be alot of different answers as its whatever it means to you.... either that or it would decsend into a load of rubbish and arguements! this way i've got a better understanding of what people do/read/see etc without the crap.

for me, i ignore the people that annoy me and try to get to the roots of why people are building what they are building. i've only been to one show so far this year (ultimate dubs) but i'm already excited about the coming year as i had alot of fun at UD. getting to know more people has made me realise there are alot less chequebook cars and trailer queens than people seem to think. its just the idiots branding cars as such through either ignorance, jealousy, admiration, or something else. we all love a good b!tch, just sometimes its misguided.

sorry about the essay! roll on the rest of the year and think positive!

Maybe its the other forum users that create the bullsh!t , the people that do the arse licking or the name calling that give the perception of the "scene"

fair play for looking a little deeper

As long as people are personally happy with their cars and build them or have them built  for themselves and not to look good to other people or change something because they get negative feedback (even if they like it )  thats what im into

Was that by any chance me and my comment on the Diamond Stitching on that interior shot you put on facebook? I suspect it was. In my deffence I'm not really an interior man, when I look at cars I normally gloss over the parts about the interior as I'm more interested in the oily stuff. I have to say though that pic made me think I should perhaps pay more attention to the interior stuff as it seems some are done really well. I think I'm gaining a new found interest in it through taking up photography. I was only thinking the other day (after commenting on that pic) that I'm looking forward to shows during the day so I can start trying out interior shots of cars and it got me thinking about what sort of things I'd like to shoot.

who would seem to have a strong opinion of 'the scene'

Do I? I guess maybe I do. I think a lot of it comes from me being all about the oily bits and for me sometimes I don't "Get" a lot of the mods being done that to me would compromise the driving experience. I did post up about the brightly coloured wheels and I'll stand by my comment that I realy don't like the pink wheels but I did like the green ones. In fact that car with the green wheels has given me an idea for the camper for this season. Watch this space!!!!

Peace out.

.... and for me sometimes I don't "Get" a lot of the mods being done that to me would compromise the driving experience.

Most of the mods on the full on show cars in the scene, at least on the more 'bling' cars rather than the motorsport themed ones do compromise the handling of course, but they sure can be nice too look at and appreciate the work....

No I think you make a valid point, it's very easy to overlook stuff and misjudge it because it's not in within your personal sphere of interest.

I guess in some ways these cars should be treated like people, don't judge a book by it's cover.

^hahaha....thats exactly what I said to him..

But we do judge..Whether it's about a person's look, their attitude, their car...that's just human nature..

Oh and I don't get the whole "scene" thing...I just love my car, get on with a few other people whom also own veedubs and enjoy other peoples work - whether it's to my taste or not..I can still appreciate the work put into someones car and I personally, not to have a dig, find people who actually work on cars more inspiring than those who pay for it but like me, some people just don't know how to do things so we have to pay for it and anyway sometimes you do need a professional for things..but I also tend to notice the smaller, personal details than just a resprayed car lowered on bbs..not trying to be a b!tch there btw..

sorry for the ramble.. i still have alcohol in my system..

Loads of people inspired by Joe's car ! It's a black mk2 on BBS wheels. Hardly ground breaking !

.....seriously though, not sure inspired would be the right word, but I have always liked Joe's attitude to working on cars, his mk2 is wicked, it's been done over time and it's all been done by himself and I have told Joe this several times, mainly so that I can get some cheap trim stuff done in the future !

I am someone that pays for stuff to be done rather than doing it myself but does that mean that my car isn't as good as some one elses of a similar standard ? I don't think so. In my opinion most people that moan about trailer queens and cheque book cars are not really seeing the car itself, only how the owner has put it together, but there's no reason why that car should be seen as any different from one that has been totally done by the owner. Yes there should be respect to the DIY'er but there should also be an appreciation for both cars and I don't think there always is.

i`ve had a good think about this as different things have inspired me through the years.
first off i was lucky enough to start my working career at a vw stealers, i had been working there for a year or so going to work on a scooter(couldn`t afford anything else as on the yts)when i passed my driving test went back to work all excited everyone was pleased for me and one of the lads had just finished servicing an oak green 16v(remember this was jan 91 so the car was only a year if that old ) and said i`ll take you up the road in it and you can bring it back, now that drive back inspired me A LOT then a few months after that the bosses son bought in his g60 that had been worked on by gti engineering. at the time i had no idea what it was until the mechanic took me up the road in it, OMG as a spotty faced 18 year old that car was amazing and the fastest thing i`d ever been in and i will always remember it wheel spinning in 3rd. that just cemented in my mind that vw`s were for me. after that i always had gti`s going to stanford hall show a couple of times but apart from that just enjoying owning the cars. fast forward several years and had a bit of a defining moment in my life 5 years or so a go(which also inspired me in a funny way) and decided to try and meet up with other gti enthusiasts which was made a whole load easier due to the internet. so i joined this site and on a cold saturday night i made my way from leicester over to lincoln where i met kniterider, adamb and a few other members who loved vw`s after that i went to my first gti international where i camped with other site members, rich, gav, golfgal to name a few and had a great weekend. then a few months later i went to vwaction and i met up with even more site members and had a top weekend. all of these meet ups inspired me maybe not for the cars but people who enjoy vw`s and mainly golfs.
nowadays my inspiration is mainly meeting up with friends i have made over the last few years at shows, or meets or pre arranged nights out. also joes enthusiasm and team grumpy

sorry for the essay but thats a general idea of what has and does inspire me

and i agree with gibby as i know there are folks out there who have no mechanical ability so have to pay people to do there car but may work many hours at there job to pay for it all, so swings and roundabouts.
but people who trailer their car then enter it in the daily driver show and shine, now they really piss me off

Agree, no real surprises, but it's a very 'tastefully' done Ed1.

Not seen it in the metal myself, but to me it's the finished result and quality of the work that matters, not bothered if it's done by 'scene' people or not.

That's my point too. Does that mean the car is rubbish because it was paid for ? Of course not.

what inspires me is other people's negative attitude.

i own a white mk2 golf gti, that runs like a bag of nails, all day long i have people asking why i drive an old clapped out golf gti. when i say its a performance car, and i love working on it, they either laugh or ask why i dont buy a newer car.

i want to be able at some point to turn up in my car and have them look at it, and not be able to call it clapped out, or slow. i want them to be able to see that hard work and effort can eventually turn out results that will impress even the most negativly minded person.

and most of all. i want them to realise that new isnt always the best, and a car to me is more than a to b traveling. its about the experience of owning, building, bodging and driving, not just looking at the damn thing.

plus, my gf seriously hates the car, and i dont perticually like her, so my way of getting back at her.

dont get me wrong, i love looking at it, and its not nessisarily the best tool i could have afforded to get from a to b.

i love the stance, i love the looks, i love the old school style, and i especially love, no infact, it makes my day, when fellow enthusiasts comment on the car, praise it, along with people, who seemingly are offended by my cars existance, much to the same way that many people are offended by heavily modified/ruined corsas. those people that seem to think it nessesary to be so upset by my cars looks they need to pass comment or judgement, i simply ask why they feel this need, i dont lose my temper or get mardy with them, i just feel sorry that they have to react to another persons possesions, which clearly means so much to me, in such a negative way.

if however they persist in this negative judgement for no apparant reason, i hastily smack them in the gob.

inspiration comes in many forms

but i think it comes down to this , be it self built or built by someone else on your instruction , its the sence of achievement at having something totally unique , ok it might look similar to another but no 2 will be identicle - having people comment , negative or posative , its causing a reaction that we all - car enthusiasts in general - thrive off

Yup - currently my inspiration lies with lining up on the grid for my first race in a car that i have built so something like that spurs me on
