had a funny experience in my mk3 1.4 last nite,
i drove home from my friends house at about midnite and got to an industrial area were i live, so i decided to have a little fun
it was nice and wet, so i drove towards a nice wide corner , turned in the wheel and ripped the handbrake at about 35mph,
the car wipped its rear end out really nicly and kinda shocked me for a second how much it came out,
i was goin kinda sideways and i could feel i was gunna hit the kerb so i let go of the steering wheel for a split second and it automatically span the opposite way and the whole car leveled itself out ,then i quickly caught the wheel and drove outta the slide nice and straight,
it was like somthing outta the drift king videos on youtube   i was quite pleased with myself how nicly i pulled it off, as my quick thinking to let go of the wheel saved me from smacking into the kerb and a 5 ft high brick wall
i now remember why i love my mk3 so much, and i dont have power steering lol
-
LOL, you put the hand brake on at 35mph..... even im not that stupid.
THEN you let go of the steering.......
THEN you mention youtube.... o god. lol!
-
well, the fastest way to counter steer in a situation like that is to let go of the wheel and then catch it, if i had tried to counter steer without letting go i would never have made it, my arms cant spin as fast as the wheel can, if u watch profesional drifters they hit the handbrake at like 40 - 50mph and then they always make sure they let go of the wheel to let it counter steer,
dnt worry mikester one day you will, learn how to drive stik
-
YOU PUT THE HANDBRAKE ON AT 35
THEN SAID U WORRIED TO HIT THE KERB
then say your a good driver, you are totally merked by this thread, dont get out of it. lol.
Your a disgrace........... ahaha

Ouch, nice bit of bickering here!
Just to say about letting go of the steering wheel; you're spot on! When I started instructing (at a well known motorsport experience day site), this was the biggest surprise as I had never learnt to drift before (national karting was my only previous experience)... Not easy to let go of the wheel when you're sliding... But its what you have to do!
-
no bickering, was just funny to see some post some rediculous thread rather than me, lol!
-
I agree with mikester..
What a gay thread.. I drive my car like a t!t but im mint coz i didnt hit the kerb
-
i didnt hit the kerb either, i let go of the wheel without even thinking about it, and then afterwards i thought, wow i actually learnt somthing by watching those drift video's,
sorry if i have afended anyone by thining that drifting my mk3 is funny
-
Is your handbrake still working? It'd be quite funny if you pulled this insane stunt like some DCI Gene Hunt, went to park it up and the car rolled away into a river or the like..
-
sorry DCI gene hunt, who or wot is that
i dont think its that bad for the handbrake doing it when the roads are soaking wet
-
and richie360,
for such a g*y thread it seems to be getting lots of replies and even more views

I've used my handbrake to pull turns, but before you flame me too, it was only in a couple of situations: once in a deserted street in snow, once in a grassy field and once in an empty gravel car park. And those were only at low speeds.
It is fun admittedly but I certainly wouldn't do it anywhere I could hit something like a wall.

haha, trust me pull ur handbrake at 30mph on a empty road on a wet day, u wont be able to stop laughin
live life to the fullest, dont be shook!!
-
Or just read a post about some one who does this, nearly slams into a wall and then brags about bein a good driver..
You'll laugh harder and for longer

dude, trust me,wen you go from drifting round every roundabout sideways in an MR2 ( see p74 on pics ov mk3s sticky)to a little golf, its about as thrillin as clamidiya
-
hold on when did i brag about being a good driver???
i never mentioned being a good driver,
im just having a laugh, i never tried to brag about my driving skills, but you all seem to think im trying to brag or sumthin,
im just laughin about the fact that i done a big skid and nearly hit a wall
,
i do remember someone posting a topic about how they had spun out in there golf and DID hit the kerb and they never got a load of stik from you guys about it
-
im sorry but wot vdub virgin just said is definatly braggin!
-
no,in just sayin theres cars to do it in and cars not to do it in,and front wheel drive cars, especialy 1.4 golfs, aint for driftin
(and there wasnt a wall or kerb in sight )
-
Manz Got Lexus Lights?
Tool.
If you'd smashed it into that kerb you'd be ranting about how poor the handling was.
And to learn something from Fast & Furious TD is not something to brag about...

Gene Hunt is the greatest (fictional) man alive (meant in the straightest way possible)

Just thought you lot might be interested to know that I once got caught by the fuzz doing a handbrake turn at a T junction. Got 6 points and a £500 fine for careless driving.
What you really need is a big empty car park with a light mist of rain. THat is proper fun weaving in and out of the posts using the handbrake (modded with a stone to be fly off).

need to learn to flick the car into corners before you bother with handbrake
lift off understeer is another one to learn
if your going to play, dont bother with handbrake, just learn to upset the car and correct it
-
Er you mean lift off oversteer? That's fine if you're going some but when doing autotesting and tight twisty stuff you need more so a light flick in and a quick snatch of the handbrake does wonders.

I was (In my old mk1 escort days) handbrake turing and donuting in a local car park..the police came and said be carefull as we dont like rulling dead bodies from cars and walked off! don't think there as friendly nowadays??
and my golf dosen't do life off over steer unless your really really really giving it some! says loads about the mk3 golfs weight! now 205gti's were great for that! :lipsrsealed:
-
when you dont have power steering the handbrake helps alot, but i have tried handbraking in cars that do have power steering and it seems harder to do, i think u can feel the road and wot ur tyres are doing more without power steering
-
That was a quality J-turn from DCI Hunt and a classic one liner as well "your a police officer not a vicar
J-turns
Handbrake flick
Scandinavian flick
Knightrider turns
Getting a RWD sliding round a corner
getting a 4WD in a full on 4 wheel drift round a corner
360 spinning a RWD car into a corner
Driving a mk1 Escort on a gravel rally track
All great fun on an advanced driving track or skidpan day I know they are
Not on the road though too many obstacles to worry about so easy to roll a car on a kerb if it's already unbalanced even at low speeds. Plus it's dangerous driving and a bit chavvy, "yeah blud I wakkkkked me andbrake on at 90 yeah it was massive man went round 8 times!"
-
hahaha
