Very

You might get away with them for a little while, just make sure you always present the fuzz with a 'side-on' view of your GTi!

Black front badge would complete the look imo

i have never had any bother in Lancashire with mine, had them on for a good three months.

I did get stopped on the M62 though on the way to Leeds and got a fine for them, still haven't taken them off though. Until i get stopped round my way then I will change them

I have run german plates for a while now and have had a few problems a couple of fines but refuse to take them off. I know for a fact that ANPR (automatic numberplate recognition) can read 'German Style' number plates. I have heard this from a friend who is a Police Officer and a relative who owns an MOT testing station. It is just another unfortunate situation of the state trying to rob us for money again  However be aware guys that if caught a numerous amount of times displaying illegally spaced plates or get an awkward policeman they have the power to have your numberplate withdrawn resulting in your vehicle being put on Q plate by the DVLA or slap you with a fine up to £1000  however this only happens in the most extreme cases which I seem to see every day. WHAT IS WRONG WITH GERMAN PLATES!!!!!!

....F*cking bureaucracy gone mad!

I don't have a spaced or 'illegal' style plate but I would have thought that it helps and doesn't hinder a car's individual identity for recognition.

Yeah, it's such a 'crime' to have set of metal plates with legible numbers and letters.

The simple issue is that our finest boys in blue don't seem to have the intelligence/interest or effort to stop all those t*ssers who speed down side roads at 60+, tailgate, lane swap, or drive around  on foreign plates year after year, often with dodgy tyres, brakes , no insurance and tanked up on their cheap Polish spirit, when the fully taxed/insured Brit is an easy nick cos his number plate clearly identifies him.

Feeling sore........you bet I am, its a war out there and we are being persecuted for being totally paid up and legal except for an iffy number plate,   next time some piece of scum drives into your pride and fully insured joy, see how interested plod is to sort it out    but have a number or letter a few mill out and its £30, just tax collectors no more no less.

By the way Joe, think they look well sorted mate.

It's all a bit rubbish really.

Those geman plates easy to read, yet look a bit nicer.

I am all for safety and don't see a problem with them. Just a way to rob our hard earned cash for more doughnuts for the rozzers.

Aren't they fat enough already??

what is wrong with German plates????  well you have answered your own question, they are GERMAN and not designed or appropriate for UK roads, so they are quite rightly ILLEGAL.  Don't get me wrong I quite like the style and would have them if they were legal, but they aren't, so would not be surprised if you all get points and a fine, regardless of ANPR or plod.
It is not an unfortunate situation of the state trying to rob us, as 99% of cars are supplied new or used with the correct legal plates and it is only idiots that change them and incur unnecessary fines.

I have run german plates for a while now and have had a few problems a couple of fines but refuse to take them off. I love the German style plates, but wouldn't fit them as I wouldn't want unnecessary Plod attention over and above everything else I have on my car. Don't want to give them any excuse to pull me over as I don't usually stay calm in these circumstances as they always seem to be able to wind me up

Typical responses from me tend to be

Can't you find proper criminals to chase?
Trying to catch up on your screw the motorist quota?

and not forgetting my old favourite.

Shouldn't you be somewhere else, beating innocent people? (Nearly got a section 5 for that one!)

I ran my German plates on my MKIV for over a year.Got stopped once...The ANPR had read the plate and flagged up an insurance issue.Sheffield traffic pulled me over, told me that they had read my plates and I had no insurance.Turns out the broker had put a ZVJ instead of ZBJ as the last letters on the registration..traffic were ok with the plates,(I asked) but they did wonder if I was in the forces..... I got lucky, they are illegal and I got sick of worrying about been pulled for em... I won't be putting them on My GTI.

Those plates immeadiatly flag on the the traffic cops on board Reg plate Computer. Their camera cannot understand if the font is not the correct style and sounds an alarm in the Car, which they immediatly see it. Dont you watch Traffic cops on the Tv. Is it really worth risking being pulled over????? they look good, but cant see the point tbh.

....I can't see the point of German plates either - Except perhaps for shows, but even then, what's the point? - Why not go the whole way and make your car lefthand drive!

Hurdy, for once I don't agree with you on something - Taking it out on traffic police with smart-arse remarks isn't very clever and in fact could quite rightly, in my opinion, get the book thrown at you one day. Besides which, word about a driver's bad attitude will quickly get around the local boys in blue - It works the other way too!

One thing I am curious about in all this is how do the ANPR cameras recognise Eastern European plates?  They are in a different font after all.

There are heaps of Polish etc. cars in Edinburgh so how do they get away with not being pulled?

I agree with you RR. It isn't a good thing. I just don't react well with them. What makes it worse is two of my best mates are/were traffic cops and they tell me so many stories about how they can deliberately wind people up if they come across someone acting arrogant or cocky that it just makes it worse if I get pulled. I must admit that it is a while since I've been stopped and the last time was down in Torquay by a lovely WPC. It was totally different when she pulled me over - it was like being caught doing something bad by a dominant woman in uniform  So much so I half felt like belting it off the line again so I could get another reprimand :lipsrsealed:

Well from Joe getting a set of German metal 'showplates', we have progressed to a general rant and rave about the effectiveness of motoring law enforcement, we seem to have some fairly polarised views.

Seems fairly straight set in 2 camps........those of us who like to have a little bit of indivduality in our lives and possessions,
and those of us who believe we should play it straight down the line and obey every rule the thought police come up with.

Now I see a perfect irony here........what kicked all this off was Joe and his rather neat German plates from the Fatherland,
which as we all know, in the words of Al Murray ........... to quote ' where would we be, if we had too many rules?'

Funny that we try to look like German motors and break the rules in doing so

Think even our German cousins would find some humour in that one

I'm not 100% but.

logic tells me that a foreign registered car does not come into british law. ( with regards to number plates).

If the car is legal say in poland/germany the police cant force them to change there plates, think of service personal and lorry drivers.

But a UK Car that is under UK Car laws, MOT ETC, has to abide by the law.

Just a thought,

....Not quite so black & white - Quite a few of us love some individuality in our lives/possessions but also know how to achieve that AND stay within the law.

Anyway, it's the law makers you should be addressing and not the police men and women who simply have to apply the laws that they are given.

How did we get from German plates to motoring law enforcement? - Simple! German plates on vehicles registered in the UK aren't technically legal for road use. Now if you really want some digression, I'm da man!! Cop this......

Thank you for bringing to my attention the latest standard of recruit into our wonderful law enforcement agency, to this end I have decided if they all look like that it worth getting nicked for, so I have completely removed the number plates, stuck on some slicks, cancelled the insurance, straight through pipe, non legal tints and spent the last 10 mins doughnutting in the town centre.....unfortunately the old woman with the disabled blue badge not positioned correctly on her windscreen was surrounded by a Tactical support team and they completely ignored me
