I think it was maxamus who suggested in another thread on this site that LED DRL's would nicely fit the lower strip vents in my OSIR splitter. I think that if they were sufficiently set back, at the very least as recessed as the plastic honeycombe fog panels above, I might get away with it!
I would switch them in sync with the standard sidelights, I think.
Does anyone know if there are any legal restrictions on minimum height off the road?
I think I need to see a Photoshop pic to assess it.
Any positive thoughts please, rather than "Don't do it! They look chav!"?
Thanks

This is the alternative position which I think is much better than changing fog grill to GT/R32 style:

Legalities aside, you'll still get some jobsworth copper pull you over and blast you for driving with fogs on.
Unless someone beats me to it I'll 'chop some DRL's into your splitter when i get home.
-
thats a cool idea!! im going to look into the drl's this month as a mod for next month, i think im going to try and fabricate a fitting so that they will run in the honeycomb grill, i have a small feeling that they would be a bit TOO low in the splitter, but would defo look smart

....A jobsworth copper wouldn't have a leg to stand on - They're simply not fogs and DRL's will be law on new cars in 2011.
Thanks for the 'chop offer

....My preference is in the upper honeycombe fog grill (like the Steel Grey pic) but only if I can make it look as if OEM.
So low in my splitter might be more risk of stone chip damage.
Let's keep each other informed of our progress, Joe, and share info here

are them making DRL's the law in the UK? If so, I highly agree.

Thought you guys should see this. It might start becomming a common mod on corsas, etc...and might just end up being abit "Chav" as you guys in the UK call it

Yeah I've seen these on a few Saxo's rocking round Basingstoke.

laughed so hard a little bit of wee came out
-
Oh no...its already happening
-
Yep all the 'bad boys' seem to be getting into them, it makes there Saxo look like an Audi innit
-
And to think old Volvo's and Saab's looked so stupid with their "lightsonallthetimeican'tturnthemoffever" feature
-
....The opinions about LED DRL's fall into just 2 camps.
One lot is insecure about their self-image and hasn't the guts not to follow their peer group's opinions. So what if chavs or anyone else has DRL's - From 2011 they'll be on ALL new cars anyway. Scooby's/Evo's have big wings - Does that make every Scooby driver a chav? According to your logic it does!
The other lot understands their safety aspect and can also appreciate their aesthetic.
-
I think in your case Robin it's all going to be about execution. Get it right and it'll look good, get it wrong and it'll look a bit chavvy. The fact you are fitting them to what is essentially a pretty new and expensive car keeps you further away from it being Chav than me slapping them on my £500 MKII.
I say go for it, it's your car etc and if the worst comes to the worst make sure they're aeasy to remove.

....Hi Nick,
I agree - It's going to be all about execution if I do it at all. The TTshop are giving me some help and my bodyshop is an award winning accident repair centre who have already done excellent work for me and they're affiliated to my VW dealer. I won't start it unless I'm 100% confident.
You're also right about the age of a car being a factor. Hella have some lozenge shaped DRL's that you'd get away with on a Mk2 in the bumper probably but I'm not suggesting you would want to do it.
If the LED strips won't 'work' on my car, I'll look into some Hella round DRL's to replace my standard fogs - We'd have to adapt behind the honeycombe to fit, but again, my bodyshop is more than capable. I'm principally into DRL's for safety reasons but if they look cool as well, I don't mind being a cool dude!
Here's a pic of a conversion from a standard Golf to a GTI which some nutter asked my bodyshop to do:
Cheers
P.S.- It's the bright blue one!
-
Dont get me wrong though! I absolutely love the DRL's and wanna have it done on the R32 when i get it but its just gonna be a brand new car and dont wanna take any risks of avoiding Warranty! Red...if u go for it and u do get it done, well done. Im sure u will be a very happy man and im sure u will just add that touch of sparkle to ur car!
-
if i had an R32, the Lights would be my first mod cos i love em!
Go for it Robin !!
-
Its the second "mod" on the list but i want to be sure about the guarantee first!

still playing with the lower vent position.. everything i've tried so far has looked rubbish
-
That looks really suits ur car Red...in my opinion ofcourse...think it looks well nice!!
-
....Hey! Thanks topher!
That's definitely the preferred position I think - More practical but more work to fit well.
At first I didn't spot that you'd 'chopped this pic, so that must mean it's looking fairly OEM. Then I went off to make a cuppa tea and saw the pic on my screen from across the room - Again it looks OEM and suits my car. The look is growing on me more and more - DON"T LET HURDY SEE THIS MOD!!!!

-
You do have to be very careful with this kind of thing so it doenst look too aftermarket (chav as we say ), I think they only places you should even attempt are headlight (which are not possible on this occasion just yet) or at the top of the fog section (like in the chop).

....I agree .
The perfect location would be where the side light strips are in the headlights, but not feasible with my sealed Xenons.
I'm off to see my bodyshop man this morning to have an initial chat about what he thinks he can do. I'll report here accordingly this afternoon.
Thanks again, topher - I'll print that chopped pic and take it with me
-
Rob.
I think that looks really good. To be honest when I saw the Pchop I was like... **Scrolls up to the first pic... Scrolls back down**
NICE. I think get it done

Too late
I'm hanging on for a while as I think that someone like Hella will eventually do a full headlight with the DRL's below contained in the same unit - They tend to do everything else
-
I'm hanging on for a while as I think that someone like Hella will eventually do a full headlight with the DRL's below contained in the same unit - They tend to do everything else
....I wouldn't hold your breath for Hella. By the time they do a full Mk5 headlight with DRL's, the Mk6 will be out with a different shaped unit. Also, I doubt that a Mk5 unit by Hella would be Xenon. But, it would still be the ideal solution for a more OEM low key appearance.
Meanwhile, I've had a chat with my bodyshop friend and it's Good News!!...........
No problem for him to fit, loom, and rocker switch into one of the blank squares next to the ESP and tyre pressure buttons. And he can cut out the black plastic fog vents leaving the whole surround frame intact    .
Extra good news is that he's kept me an undamaged R32 rear spoiler from a crashed car.

A new set of headlight with Xenon's would be major money, for you halogen boys maybe it would be ok

your welcome mate.

Replace the dull looking VW badge in the center with a lightbulb like a Wolseley.

It's just as good a second post as yours...
"I've had my Mk5 DSG GTI since August 05 and am still in love with her.
How do I set up my profile, please?
Er? Why did the Subject get changed to "golf" from "V e e D u b b e r s" ?"
And what's wrong with a Wolseley style illuminated badge? I thought you were an attention seeker.

....I noticed the "V e e D u b b e r s" > "Golf" change too - It's hardly a word to censor
I thought you were taking the p!ss - Too cheeky for a second post ever before you've got to know anyone here. Those Wolseley badges were very cool....Way back in the day!
Nothing wrong with getting attention but I find I don't have to seek it

just had a quick look at the Ultimate Dubs show
There was a guy who was selling complete units with integrated LED's for the Mk V including BMW angel eyes.
£184 delivered within 4 days
contact sales@dubzlife.co.uk

Looked ok if you like that sort of thing
-
....Very interesting - Thanks.
Can't possibly be a Xenon sealed unit at £184!! Once you've had Xenons there's no going back.

Well found.

Hurdy,
Any chance of some pictures and a full report when you're finished please

Not Xenons I'm afraid. If they were then they would be illegal. If you look closely at the pic you can see that the beams have angel eyes around them too, so you get the best of DRL's and the BMW angel eye thing  When they are fitted I will use some of the Phillips bright blue bulbs to give them bit of an extra oomph
Hurdy,
Any chance of some pictures and a full report when you're finished please

I'll see what I can do for you. I haven't checked out the wiring yet as I suspect some jiggery pokery will be needed to get the DRL's working as DRL's :undecided:

Won't they be controlled by the side light circuit?
The third light on the right is that for the indicator?
They look great
-
Third light is the indicator.
You may be right about the side lights...hope so!
-
are they Road legal????, your lucky T.T's not around!!. Do look smart though
-
....Those look awesome, Hurdy - I'm jealous (or should that be envious - I get them mixed up). But I have Xenons and am very happy about them for night driving.

If you want 'em that's the place to have them, in the main lighting unit.

Mine are on now
Look cool as fcuk too

This thread is useless without pictures...... :lipsrsealed:

Exactly! Hurdy is just teasing us all!
The suspense is killing me! And 01:51 was a great time to take pics as it's dark....

Come on hurdy...you know what your supposed to do

Managed to get them fitted by Awesome yesterday - so a big thanks to them as I originally hadn't booked in for this doing. It did take a little bit of re-wiring, but as they could fit it in I decided why not as it saved me taking the front bumper off myself.
And if anyone wants the headlights then they can be bought through either Awesome (it is in their ultrarange) or through the pic web address below.

Hurdy
Could you take some pics from a few metres back please. I would like to see how the front end looks now with those new lights on.
Cheers
PS. Are these only available on Xenons?
-
....Very very very very very nice indeed!!!!
Any chance of some pics from a greater distance so we can see them in context of the overall look of the car, please, Hurdy?
-
Awesome Hurdy!!
As requested. Can we see a few pics from a few metres please. Your car is gonna look awesome!

is there an option of just running the drl's or do the main lights have to be on aswell??

they look s**t hot! nice job!
-
not too keeen on the big orange indicator either
yeah but not really anywhere for it to go with them LED's
-
What's that extra bright bulb next to the indicator? Looks like a sidelight but I thought with DRL and the Angel Eyes you wouldn't need a sidelight?
Is the main beam Xenon?
-
Hey Hurdy, How much do Awesome charge to fit them?
Thanks
-
Is the main beam Xenon?
i was wondering that aswell, HURDY GET YOUR @RSE BACK TO THIS THREAD!!
-
Sooooo many questions.
Right then.
The beams are normal lights and not xenons, they are made to give the impression of Xenons and the main beam (NOT full beam) looks virtually like a Xenon light and with the Phillips lights fitted (I replaced the stock ones) they give even more an impression of Xenons and aren't far off in terms of the light they throw out at night.
The full beam also looks great and gives a good spread of light (had to use this coming over the Snake pass last night at 8pm )
Awesome.......errrr......ZERO!!!!!!!!! they overquoted me for the fitting time for the Full Milltek system and they did the lights and exhaust within the time they had for the exhaust on its own.
I reckon it is about an hours work though as they take the front off the car and loom up the wires before fitting (very neatly too). BE WARNED...they have no function for setting up the beam level and so I had to drive home with a slightly high main beam (didn't get flashed though) which is now sorted.
The extra light next to the LED's is the sidelight as it needs it for legal purposes. Awesome could have separated them out, but it would have meant splicing into a power supply that wouldn't affect the LED's when the ignition is switched and so (for now) they sit together.
I agree about the indicator light and will be sourcing a couple of silver edition ones (silver when off and amber when lit) as soon as I can.
The DRL's come on through the side light function and activate the angel eye function at the same time. If you wanted them separating out they are on different wiring, but it would mean pulling extra wiring through into the cockpit and having an extra switch somewhere. I prefer them on together myself and so it wasn't an issue (but I did ask as I thought some of you may want to separate them out).
As soon as it gets a little darker outside I will take a pic or two and post them.
I must say it is one of my better spur of the moment purchases and as Awesome managed to fit them the day after it must have been meant to be.
-
....Thanks for all the info, Hurdy.
I'd like to see a front of whole car pic of the LED DRL's on only, or as "only" as you can get, in daylight.....As they are DAYLIGHT Running Lights

I think that some of us would like to get a good impression of how these DRL's you've got would look to another road user when switched on in daylight.
Goodee! Thanks a lot
-
Thanks for all the info Hurdy - Once you get the silver indicator light it will really look Awesome!
All you need next is the rear LED outers...

Sorry it's a wee bit out of focus, but I was stood in the middle of the road.
-
Now that looks GOOOD! They look much better on the car than just close up if you know what I mean...
Oh no....there's that slippery slope again...
-
looks alot better from a distance  if i were (probably will) to get them then the extra switch for the drl's would be a must and would then turn them off at night

Thanks, Hurdy - Perhaps a pic in full daylight tomorrow?
The DRL+Angels combo looks quite cool  - Should look awesome on the road in motion to other vehicles. I almost wish I didn't have Xenons, but....

Hurdy! Looks good!...Bet your well chuffed as the people in the UK would say
Did you forget to blank your number plates or you not fussed anymore xD
Enjoy !

It is too different to standard now to bother hiding them. Anyone cloning it would have a hell of a time sourcing all the bits to make it look the same now
-
You have a point...private plates in the UK are very interesting....if i go over to the UK and i get a car i think id try and get myself a private plate...abit of a different topic but any websites where i can search for plates
-
Hurdy, what do your insurance company say about the lights, are they classed as a modification?
They look quite good too, i prefer them in the headlamp unit as oppose to else where on the car.

They are okay with it although they are charging me yet another £25 "administration" for the pleasure of yet another insurance certificate

is the big orange light on all the time aswell?
or does that only come on when you are indicating?
-
Very nice.....Looks a neat job.
Question are you going to get an "ice white" xenon bulb for the side light. So that they are not off white?
-

Only when indicating....it's the indicater light after all

Yes I will be. I only really noticed the difference when I took the pictures.
So once I get that and the silvered indicator bulb I should be done with the fronts.
-
So to clarify - Are the DRL part of the unit on all the time? ie whenever the ignition is on? as well as when the angel eyes are on?
-
So to clarify - Are the DRL part of the unit on all the time? ie whenever the ignition is on? as well as when the angel eyes are on?
No. I have them set up as being activated when I turn on the sidelights and the angel lights come on at the same time.
-
What happens when you have them set on the Auto setting?
-
They are either on or off

I'm definitely going to be installing my LED DRL's so they are separately and independently switched on/off, and I might even fit a rheostat so that their brightness can be varied.
I think that the LED strip plus Angel rings still look very good together and, importantly, nothing in the DRL safety effectiveness will be lost.

Managed to get rid of the "egg yolk" effect on the headlights.

I've left my sidelights the same at the moment as I haven't got time to take off the front end and change them (can't get to them in situe ). I need a spare day to do it
-
Might I suggest you take tomorrow off too?
Tell the missus its to spend more time with her

Looks nice - are the angel eyes on as well or did you isolate them from the DRLs?

The angel eyes are on but only really show up at night/dusk.
-
....Brilliant!! Thanx Hurdy
They're not over bright so no-one can claim they're being dazzled. Also, no-one can say they're chavvy either!
I'll copy the pic into the Tyresmoke thread on GTI DRL's
-
Looking good Hurdy, shame they don't do one for Xenons, :undecided:

I quite like this last look, along with Hurdys look it seems the most OEM :undecided:

....Of the 2 pics, I prefer the lower pic's maroon Mk5 look too. I found the guy's How-To pdf on vortex - It's VERY involved and not for the faint-hearted!

Since when is anything from America NOT very involved..... :embarassed:

Can I ask one more question.
Side lights on = bottom row of lights and the Angel Rings, yes.
Main Light = all of the above and the Xennon looking bulb light up, yes
Full Beam = A whole lot of lighting.... Is this correct?
P.S. You must be the new "Northern Lights" or " The Sheffield Aurorer"

Yup - you got it
I quite fancy some internal lighting too  Get a proper Disco going in there

I visited the TTshop this week and we poked around to see if the Audi LED's could be fitted. Not unless I cut into the crash bars (no way!!) or changed my vents to the GT style with horizontal bars and fitted the DRL's low as in the pics in this thread.
So it's definitely a no-no for me. I might check out the Hella DRL replacements for the fogs.
