and if it was serious id quickly jus put her bak to standard

lets be honest though they dnt always check everything the main things they worry aout are engine mods

and well i have probably saved myself a fortune by not bothering - i foun once i had added parts of body kit and wen somene crashed into the back of it the insurance paid out but because the part wasn standard they wouldnt replace tht bit - but to me tht didnt matter
Title: Re: crap insurerance
Post by: Chris 'N' Jen on 29 February 2008, 12:30
i think you might be mistaken on that. Its not just performance mods as cosmetic mods also make the car more disireable. so more chance of being chored.

if insurance can get away with not paying out they will. you may have just been lucky that time.

If you hit someone with out declaring your mods your insurance is technically void. so you are uninsured.
Title: Re: crap insurerance
Post by: linz on 29 February 2008, 12:35
i have to say i have done it for years :)

and never had a problem

if they are extreme mods thn sure you need to be honest but for an exhaust system

id just stick it on an be quiet they really arnt going to notice

your choice but look at it this way.

If you were the third party and someone hit you. both cars totald - their insurance said hell no - the policy is void as he/she didnt declare mods. youd be pretty pissed - no?

i guess thats a risk u tke but to be honest when it comes to tht they often dont fully check them i mean if its tht bad they are not gonna be looking at an exhaust but more looking into what happened

insurance companies dont wanna pay. if they can get out of it (by any means) they will.

its not a risk you take, its a risk that the "uninsured" takes for you and really isnt right.

thats all

Linz, your going to think im a right party pooper boring so and so. If the sh!t where to hit the fan, say, god forbid, you ended up killing someone, they would be going through your car with a fine tooth pick and your insurance would be void. Or say you end up proper smashing your car, all your thounsands of pounds worth of mods will be down the drain.

My comments only have your best interesets at heart. Little things here and there like dump valves or filters (come to think of it, even filters) you will probs get away with. Things like wheels, remaps, exhausts, coilcovers I would declare, just me tho.

il be honest if i killed someone who says i will wanna drive again anyway

i jus think for as something as little as an exhaust its not worth declaring in my opinion
i never declare my wheels my exhaust or lowering ect at the end of the day if i have a minor accident i may as well jus replace them myself as well it would probably be cheaper in the long run

eah to there own but they are not as thurah (sp i cant spell lol) as you think minor accidents ect are just not worth there time and money to investigate

Oh yeah, Im not knocking you (see what I did there , knock . . . . . ). You'll have to come to meet once you get all your bits done and show her off :) - Bugjam in the Summer isnt too far up the road from you.

Problem is if you knock someone over and kill them and you didn't declare the mods not only will your insurace be invalied but you could be looking at a jail term for driving without insurance.

Don't jump in head first yet, give HIC a ring and see what their quote is they are usualy pretty good with mods especially one's that don't do too much to performance.

Title: Re: crap insurerance
Post by: AlanT on 29 February 2008, 19:02
sorry linz but thats a bit idiotic imo, things like colour coding or a spoiler maybe, but wheels, suspention, exhaust, etc, well thats the firts place most insurance investigators will look, because they are the most popular and most obviouse, for the sake of a few more pennies its worth the piece of mind, and you say if it was big things you would quicky take them off? what if you were god forbid put in hospital?

sorry but its people like yorself that are the reason everyone payes stupidly high insurance, just something to think about.....
Title: Re: crap insurerance
Post by: boneybradley on 29 February 2008, 19:05
I am with h.i.c with all mods listed and it was cheaper than eleswhere without the mod's..I must also add I work for a major insurer with good staff discounts that dont come close price wise!

oh and my friend wrote his skyline off, was fully comp but didnt declare any mods and they said "fk off" thats over 10 grand lost.....and if he hit someone that would've been serious!!

Mate of mine had a clio and was hit from behind. The clio had a renault laguna front splitter on it and the insurance company said because she didnt tell them about it that she would have to pay half towards the damage to her car!!!  :undecided:

there is a reason for that.

Generally speaking joe public wants to modify their car for either performance - more chance of crashing due to extra speed or cosmetic - more chance of getting twoked, vandalised etc.

Both of the above make the modified car a higher risk for them than a standard car, this reflects in the premium we pay.

not to mention the boyo club who want nos on their 1.2 corsa. this is why younger drivers pay more.

so how traceable is a remap ?
its not like theres a chip visable or something ? how does an insurance company check it ?
Title: Re: crap insurerance
Post by: linz on 29 February 2008, 20:59
i guess its each to their own

on my golf i wont be declaring anything till she finished when shes modded to show spec then yh i will declare it all
Title: Re: crap insurerance
Post by: AlanT on 29 February 2008, 21:20
then you might aswell not bother with the insurance at all, it'll be a waste of money seen as it'll be void.......

Very easy to trace, simple interogation of ECU.  More likely to check for this if the car is non standard in other ways ie bigger alloys, lowered suspension.  They know what to look for as they see it all the time.  Insurance co's will use any excuse not to pay out - especially the cheaper ones.  They can be cheap for a reason!  Don't give them an excuse.....

if you do happen to mo someone down they will rip your car to pieces just to look for any reason at all not to pay out . like someone else said stuff like alloys will trigger them to look under the bonnet and test the ecu . then it prisson for you mate bye

By the way before declaring that you mod your car but you don't inform your insurance I would think twice as I know some insurance companies have people now who's job it is to read forums like this and try to find out people who mod cars but don't declare it.  At the end of the day it is a very simple process,

You mod it you pay the insurance, you can't afford it then don't mod!!
