Post by: maxamus on 28 February 2008, 15:30
For all those black owners who were unsure as to how it would look:

Halfords Black Satin?

Nah mate. I got one of the local garages to do it. They used matt effect spray paint. Applied in several thin layers.

The red listick around the grill sticks out a mile now  Looks better if you ask me

Liking that, easy to remove?

Liking that, easy to remove?

You have to twist the original badge to the left to take it out. Its a pain and i broke the clips of mine. Took me around 2min to remove. However, the new one was easy to put in - it just clips in and then you can rotate to centre position.
Im not really bothered about snapping the clips of the original badge as i wount be using it anymore and if i ever do need it again its just £13 from the dealers so nothing to worry about.

It looks good against the black grill.

Wonder what it would look like against a reflex silver car?

Ye im going to get the Back badge done aswell but because that is attached to the boot release its more delicate. So, i've asked my local VW dealers to do it for me. They charging me £30.

The front one i got done at a local car cosmetic place. The guy's an ex-VW technician who left to start his own workshop so hes very reliable. Even my local VW dealer uses him when hes very busy and it was my local dealer who recommended him. Hes based over in Skippers Lane Industrial Estate, Middlesbrough.

He charged me £20 to paint the front badge.

and just a note.....i went for the MATT PAINT option and NOT SATIN PAINT as i wanted the dull look which is non-shiney
which i think looks better because the "VW" is still noticeable but not in your face which gives the grill more of a presence and moves the focus onto the red-lipstick and GTI badge.......

The turn the badge to the left to remove, are we talking just the chrome front part of the badge or the whole thing (as in the backing VW bit).

Gave mine a quick look at the weekend and it didnt seem to want to budge.

Post by: SKAVIA on 05 March 2008, 06:58
The whole badge inc the plastic part.
So wedge your fingers in through the V and the W and twist the whole thing anti-clockwise. Give it a little jiggle while you're twisting as it may be stuck.
I sprayed mine last weekend with matt black and it came out lovely!

Post by: 08micsta on 05 March 2008, 07:56
I think that looks great.

But if you want the real effect why not just remove the whole bage completely? Aka Debadge the grill. Looks mighty fine and just get hte small indenture on the bonnet fillet.

Very common mod over here and in the USA. If you want pics I can arrange.

Mike

Cant believe i didnt do this along time ago!

Car certainly gets more attention now.
And the handful of other GTI drivers i've seen look at my car in a weird way. I guess the r32 tints, colour-coded bumpers and now the black front badge makes their cars look sh!te

....Hmm - Not a bad idea but wouldn't they be a bit too low? They would fit very neatly but look best if set back slightly, say three-quarters inch. Food for thought

The red interior section highlights the black VW section and makes it stand out more. I might be tempted to do a reverse one now. ie paint the VW black and have the interior sprayed in reflex silver

by the way guys, the matt finish does not last. Neither does using spray paint. After a few weeks mine is chipping already. I've had to take it off and apply a few more coats of spray paint.

I ended up buying another badge and this time get it fully 100% done. I got it sanded down, primed, painted and laquered costing me £35 (+ £14 for the badge). This is the only way to keep the badge chip free as the laquer protects the paintwork (much like varnish on wood). This laquer finish gives it a glossy finish and slightly darker than the matt but still looks good.

Im saving this new badge for the summer and in the mean time am using the matt finish one (no doubt it will need afew more coats in the coming months due to the sh!te weather).

You say the rear is the 'new' type, I just thought the GTI had a different style thats all.  My GTI has a smooth, my mates GT TDI (same year) has the 3D type - I assumed it was one of those GTI things like the gloss black B pillars.

I do really like it on the front, and thought I'd really like it on the rear, but I'm just not 100% sure about it. Though maybe its a photo thing and it looks better in the flesh.....

I want someone with a silver car (like mine) to do their rear badge so I can see what it looks like as I've only seen the rears done on black cars so far.

Russ/Robin - I've just received my vented fronts today however only one side has the rear scoop behind the vent (to channel the air). Have you guys kept this on and should both side have it?

....It's as you've received it - One side has a removable panel set behind - I haven't removed mine because I'm not sure if it's not there for a purpose.

Martin - Looking at the rear badge some more, I think it would look better if the indented 'background' was glossy or that the two surfaces were different.

Yeah I left it on mine too, just installed as they came in the box.

Is it just me or does that look  Yours looks much better martininwillerby, but I'm not convinced somehow, I'd like to see a black ED30 with one (or GTI with smoked lights and colour coded). Front badge looks top notch

....Yes (for rear badge only for me), but I know that the TTshop haven't been able to source them reliably yet, so there's no point until we all know prices. Those Americans are being very sloooow

I would add a coat of laquor to that matt finish otherwise the paint will peel/chip away. And, if you do use a jet wash then that will affect it aswell resulting in it lasting less than a month (like i found out). I had to take it off and give it a few more coat's of paint.

The onlt thing that is going to keep it looking black is laquor or some other finishing product

You will always have a real job tring to get paint to stick to a chrome surface no matter how many coats you put on.You need to make the surface of the badge as rough as you can, or you will keep needing to repaint it month after month.

Yes.
The only way to do is to sand the surface down so its a rough texture. Then apply primer, and then apply a few coates of paint. And then to protect the paintwork apply a laquor.
