Title: PERFORMANCE DAY!
Post by: Hurdy on 26 February 2008, 18:12
Would anyone be interested in doing a performance day with their MKV car.

I'm thinking of getting the figures you have always wanted to know:-

standing qtr
standing 1/2 mile
standing mile
max speed

0-30,40,50,60,70,80,90,100

In gear accelleration times

Braking distances.

Doing something like this at Bruntingthorpe or equivalent.

It would mean organising the airfield for the day and performance equipment, but I'm sure we could arrange the rest ouselves (I don't mind doing some of the organising) :nerd:

Initially I'll be keeping it to MKV's, but if there are spaces left I'll throw it open to th rest of the forum.

What do people think?

I'd be up for that.

Give me the opportunity to see who's mods are really improving performance before I start spending my own cash on them.

a bit to far for me to travel too.A good idea however.
I am however attending Crail 1/4 mile this weekend weather permiting and hopefully get some times, and maybe some vagcom times too.

Title: Re: PERFORMANCE DAY!
Post by: Hurdy on 26 February 2008, 19:20
This is the place I was thinking about.

http://www.bruntingthorpe.com/about.htm

It is the same place where the GTI International is held and where Topgear sometimes do shootouts.

I've enquired how much it would be to hire the main circuit for the day and so we'll have to take it from there. If there are any othe venues people can think of, then let me know.

Mk5 shootout? As long as everything goes to plan with my purchase on Friday i'd be up for that! And I'm sure Golf+ would be interested.. who could also provide timing gear.

How cool!! Does that mean we are all going to be featured in a magazine????

Calling all R32's dont let me be responsible for the laptimes all on my own.... we are going to be in a magazine for god sake!!!!

Some mates with nice motors (M3's, Lotus' etc) have hired Bruntingthorpe before, excellent value with enough of you. If you do it there I will be there!

I was just sounding guys out on here originally, as a lot of us have been wondering what our MKV cars could actually do with their performance mods against similar MKV's. I hadn't reckoned on other MK's :embarassed:. I know some other forums have done MK specific shootouts and that was my initial intention. I wasn't meaning to be elitist. Have any of the other MKs done something similar in the past Rhyso? and if so did they keep it MK specific or have an open MK shootout? :undecided:

Just guaging interest at the moment

There's quite a bit of interest from the MKV guys so far . I have no idea of prices, numbers etc at the moment either, but when I do I'll let everyone know. It was initially meant as a MKV performance day/shootout although I have no ideas of numbers so far and so can't say whether there's spaces or not

Good idea Hurdy. Reckon start it as a mk5 thing and then see where it goes in terms of making the price realistic.

Only need a chunk of Bruntingthorpe for recording those figures, not sure if they are able to help with the timing equipment and someone who knows how to use it!

Let me know if you need any help :)

Got a reply from Bruntingthorpe today (e-mail) and they want me to give them a bell as they basically don't allow us to arrange our own day. They will arrange whatever we want for us (quoting health and safety reasons!), but I'm expecting it to cost a bit. I'll let you know when I do.

Title: Re: PERFORMANCE DAY!
Post by: Hurdy on 01 March 2008, 11:39
Right guys....as I said on page 1 it is a MKV performance testing day.

A few more questions for you all now.....and be serious

1. Do we want feeding and watering?
2. Besides the performance measures on page 1 - does anyone think we've missed something?
3. What price are we willing to go to?
4. Do we want a weekend date? (seems obvious to me, but others may prefer a weekday!)

Looking back at the postings we have 21 MKV car owners interested so far. I'm thinking about a maximum of 25 cars on the day as I know from past experience that 21 people interested can equate to less once dates, venue and price have been added into the mix.

5. Does 25 spaces sound okay?

I have 4 weekends in my diary free and would go for anyone (if they are available at Brunters) I'll not disclose them yet, but they are all between late April and early June.
Title: Re: PERFORMANCE DAY!
Post by: acwats on 01 March 2008, 16:12
1. Not bothered about catering personally, I think it will work out expensive
2. I went to Bruntingthorpe in the late 90'w with Jonathan Palmer (now at Bedfrod Autodrome) - is there any chance of a small circuit being devised?
3. see below
4. Weekend preffered
5. 25 would be ok . I think you would need to manage people's expectations about how much time they will get driving, this will affect how much I 'm prepared to pay. If we only have one runway and 25 cars trying to do a standing mile it might be one run per hour each?
Has anybody done this before (I've been to Curborough) with my Westfield with about 20 cars and was getting a run every 20 mins or so (3 per hour 12 or so in the day)
Title: Re: PERFORMANCE DAY!
Post by: MikeGTI on 01 March 2008, 18:09
1. Also not bothered about catering.
2. Idea of a little circuit definitely appeals.
3. Well trackdays cost £120 +. I wouldn't be prepared to pay that for something like this - Thinking £50-£60??
4. Weekend very much preferred.
5. Not got a clue how many should be allowed.

To be honest I've got a completely standard GTI so for me the day is more about speaking to people about styling and engine mods, how much they are and who they use rather than blasting my car up and down in a straight line as I've no mods that will have changed the performance.

Perhaps you could offer two tickets - One for people who want to do the testing etc. Then a cheaper ticket for people who want to attend but not participate in the testing etc.

Hmm, an audience eh...interesting thought.
Title: Re: PERFORMANCE DAY!
Post by: MikeGTI on 01 March 2008, 19:14
Plus then when the inevitable drop-outs occur you might find some of the "audience types" will step up to the mark and do the testing etc. to keep the numbers up.

Post by: R32UK on 01 March 2008, 20:21
Weekend for me would be best.
Not sure about how much a track day is so I am bracing myself for the worst.
Not too bothered about being fed either.. We can always use our engines to cook something up
Would be nice to have a track to keep us entertained.

Im just preparing myself for the worst when it comes to telling my insurance company
Title: Re: PERFORMANCE DAY!
Post by: RedRobin on 01 March 2008, 20:48
- Best to save money for the day by not going for the 'official' catering. Bring your roadkill ovens, guys!

- Little circuit would be a bonus but not essential.

- Cost? Depends what's offered in return for our dosh.

- Weekday or weekend doesn't matter to me. Weekday slightly preferred as I'm more likely to be available.

- Take Bruntingthorpe's advice about numbers.

Last time I went there I was able to hire a helmet. What's the helmet scene?
Title: Re: PERFORMANCE DAY!
Post by: Kiddfrost on 01 March 2008, 21:09
1. Not bothered about food, will ask the missus to make me some sarnies
2. Is there such thing as a reputable, portable dyno that comes with an operator? A little circuit would be fun.
3. Depends on what you get for the day so am prepared to pay the going rate if its decent value for money.
4. Weekend preferred.
5. I'll bow to others experience on this.

Do we need to have any kind of special insurance for the day?
Title: Re: PERFORMANCE DAY!
Post by: Hurdy on 02 March 2008, 00:07

Do we need to have any kind of special insurance for the day?

Just go to google and type in track day insurance. There are dozens of providers.

Insurance for trackdays is essential. If I manage to get some form of track driving arranged then you will need it. If we end up doing performance testing only (straight line testing) then most people tend not to take out the extra insurance (although for peace of mind you still can if you want).

1. Not bothered either way , but reckon its easier if we take a bbq or each person looks after themselves
2. Looks good , I reckon if anyone had some 4 wheel scales that would be good (or should we make that another day )
3. for a good day priceless
4. weekend for me and prob better turnout
5. 25 is great but always have 'backups' , people WILL dropout

getting married soon so it'd better not be on my honeymoon

Can we invite one of the VW mags , or video it and sell it for profit on golfgtiforum ?

I would be up for it except for two minor issues;

1) Would need to take the SEAT disguise off.
2) It would be best part of a 1,000 mile round trip.

Sounds like it will be awesome though - Another one of those times I wish I stayed in middle England as there is just nothing like that up this way.

Will be interesting to see the results though :)

I would love to see some remapped Edition 30's get proven 160+mph.

....Sorry but I can't. I would love to help but you will have to go to one of AP Racing's appointed agents. I was involved in the brake development for the Mk5 GTI. Btw, the brakes fit both the 17" and 18" Monzas without spacers and AP do NOT recommend spacers. I know they are relatively expensive but everyone without exception who has tried the brakes on my car has gone "Wow!!!!" and the pedal response feel is faultless.

Anyway, do you have a Mk5 to put these AP's on?

Title: Re: PERFORMANCE DAY!

while we're being off-topic, what size are those discs Robin?

....330 x 28 with 50mm deep pad. Each corner weighs 10.6 Kg.

Standard GTI front brake is 290 x 25 with 60mm deep pad. Each corner weighs 15.10 Kg.

The AP is 4-pot caliper and there is no significant gain in using the AP 6-pot on the GTI because of the car's relative light weight and broad tyre contact. AP reckon that the Mk5 R32's standard VW brakes are a good match for the standard R32 - A better match than the GTI's are.

Having saved about 10 Kg on my brakes, that balances a 10 Kg weight gain if I get a Quaife ATB diff. My carbonfibre bonnet gives further weight saving. But, Hey!! I'm talking like a trackie! I'm not actually seeking to lose weight!

UPDATE!!!!!   UPDATE!!!!
Just got off the phone with Dave Walton at Bruntingthorpe and it is a weeeeeee bit expensive for 20-25 people. He only has one weekend date available and that is the 1st of June. We would get exclusive use of the site for this day and we would get all the timings we want including a top speed run and a timed handling track for testing suspension etc. All the timing kit would be provided.

He says he SHOULD be able to get it down to £4k for the day - so working that out it would be £200 a head if we had 20 people turn up.
The more we get - the lower the price per head would be. He says he could accomodate up to 40-50 people on the day. This would mean that it would bring the price down to between £80 and £100 a head although I am a little retisent about achieving those kind of numbers.
One proviso that he asked for was road legal exhausts - so stripping out and getting a through exhaust for the day would be a no-no!

The only other alternative isn't much cheaper, but would mean a Friday deal from 12noon to around 6pm - again with exclusive use of the site. This would be around £3.5k.

Bare in mind that I've haggled hard and the original figure that I was quoted was £7.5 k for the 1st June

I personally could afford the £200, although for £320 I could get myself a Performance box from Racelogic and do all the testing myself (but where's the fun in that!) and might get the box regardless

£80 to £100 is a much more reasonable figure and does mean that you would get the performance figures, a handling stage and a great day out for the forum.

If we want the 1st of June we would have to move quickly as it is only March and all the other dates are already full!

If this falls through I would look at somewhere else (but not quite as central in England) - so don't worry too much at this point!

Let me know what you think about the prices, date etc. Cheers.

I can't see people paying that, will get my head together with jv at the weekend and see if we can't jump on someone from Golf+ at Ultimate Dubs to get something sorted for us.

if you post in the shows, events and meets section then we could get loads more people up for it, i dont mind other mk's turning up to lower the price,

also a magazine would be stupid to turn down an event like this.

I'd be prepared to pay the £80-£100 figure but don't think I can justify £200.

I'd certainly rather pay an extra £20 to make it a Saturday and think you'd find it easier to fill it on a Sat than a Fri.

Was there any mention of a small curcuit being available, I noticed Performance Car magazine set one up at Bruntingthorpe in their mag this month.

They will set us up a small handling circuit (cones etc) and it can be timed. They can't allow us to have a full timed circuit as they have certain regulations that they have to stick to with regards to circuit racing. They MAY however, let us have use of a larger circuit, but it wouldn't be timed.

If we could organise something with Golf+ with regards to supplements or alternatives in return for an exclusive, then that would be most excellent

Cheers Topher.

I'm in for either price. I'm sure 40-50 is acheivable if opened up to all Mk's, magazine would jump at the chance to be involved I would think.

Sounds like it could turn out to be an awesome day so I'm still happy to pay the going rate. I think more the merrier to a certain point, 30 - 40 perhaps?

Good work Hurdy. 40 people at 100 quid for what you are getting for a day out is pretty awesome I reckon. I can't see any actual funding coming from a magazine so we may be better managing this ourselves but that can be looked at.

The date seems to fit in nicely with all the summer shows too.

Currently talking to some more venues to try and get a better deal

I'll hopefully hear some news either at the end of this week or the start of next (or both )

I wasn't having much luck with this recently until a random conversation with a guy who organises events at Bedford Autodrome. He mentioned that the MOD do hire out their airstrips and that they are very reasonable compared with most of the mainstream sites. So I'm now chasing up this to see what can be arranged, although it looks like most of the airfields are in the South. If it works out much cheaper, then we can probably have the performance kit ourselves and download the times onto a laptop on the day and download onto discs for everyone to keep. I'll keep you all posted of developments.

I'm off to this on the 28th July... (Been moved from the 14th)

http://www.vxronline.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=16327

The organiser has put it on all the other Hot Hatch Forums (although never saw it on here) and as fas as know it's fully booked now
But I shall be holding the GTI flag for us anyway..
Should be a cracking day.. As i've been to a couple of MLR ones (Evo's) and they were spot on..

But still up for this day of Hurdy's too..

Bruntingthorpe is fully booked at the weekend and the MOD link fell through.

I'd been looking at some racetrack meets to see if any would be prepared to modify one of their days for a performance cum trackday rolled into one. Haven't chased up the last few contacts in the last week :embarassed:, but the first three came to nought. Pricewise they are wanting north of £150 for standard trackdays and don't really want to know about performance measuring.

Has anyone got airfields (diisused) or small racetracks near them that I could have missed. Please feel free to put in here and if I haven't contacted them yet, I'll add them to my list.

Hiya, just found this thread Doh!

I'd be up for it, i'm taking it you would be having it in England somewhere? There may well be places up here you could hold this thing but i'm thinking most people won't travel!!

I will travel however, depending how far it is, im going to santa pod this weekend and driving to swansea in June, so driving isn't much of an issue for me.

Hurdy: Have you tried Elvington air field near York ?
I know that at least two of the driving tuition / car experience companies use it, including Driverskills who I had a day with a couple of weeks ago.
