Hi,
I am looking at various mrkV gti's to buy and am stuck on whether to get a 3 door or a 5 door. I understand how a 5 door can be more practical.
Has anyone bought a 3 door and wished they had gone for the 5 door...or vice versa. Is the 5 door seen as less sporty than the 3 door.
Thanks...
-
I bought 3-door. It looks more dynamic than 5-door version. I don't have family, and I do not give lifts in the backseat. Choose depending on how you want to use your car.
Do I want to change to 5-door? Heeeeeeellll no!
P.S. Welcome to the forum.
P.P.S. Buy Edition 30.
P.P.P.S Choose candy white.

I've gone for the 3 door. The 5 door version actually looks crap IMHO. The car loses it looks with the extra two doors.
-
5 dr looks crap as with all sports cars (except rs4). i went 3rd
-
i expect the gti doors are same to gt doors? I got a 5 door one due to the 3 door one was very heavy to open and felt to closed in.
-
3door, those big doors are great and make the car look way more sporty, and i people have a problem climbing into the back of my gti then they get left at the side of the road
-
I used to have a 3 door when I had my Mk4, flippin pain in the ar5e, made sure I got 5 door GTI, dont give a stuff about looks, 3 or 5 doors, you still put your foot down and it goes like the clappers and you dont have people scrabbling to get in and out of the back. you know it makes sense. :nerd:
-
i have a 5 door and dont regret it at all. on the 5 door all the lines look spot on but on the 3 door there is a part on the side widows that does not line up right but then again if you dont have kids or ever have anyone in the back get 3 door.
-
Go to my new posting and compare for yourself.
-
3door alwyas looks better

If you have a family to lug around then I can see why people want a 5 door, but 3 doors looks the tits.

5 door all the way. i used to be a 3 door person but in my opinion the golf looks alot more composed and sporty in the 5dr. The way the car look is obviously down to personal opinion so I doubt anyone saying they like the look of the 3/5dr will sway your opinion. But simply put why have 3 when you can have 5??
I also find the boot latch of the golf quite annoying and in crap weather means your hands are always getting dirty opening and closing the boot. the solution is to quite simply throw stuff on the back seat! It also saves alot of hassel getting people in and out, as a couple of 3dr owner seem to have problem getting their seats back to the original position... something that I hate doing is having my seat moved!

....I often have 3 jailbait teenage girlies (my daughter's friends) in the back seat. Also, a 450W Mackie amp I can only just carry plus music gear with back seats down. The rear doors on a 5-door seriously help access and loading/unloading. Also when I've carried a spare set of 4 wheels with tyres etc.
Unexpectedly I find the 5-door looks more attractive and its looks don't need to be compared with other 3-door hot hatches. Plus a narrow garage space is a very practical consideration, AND reaching for the safety belt!!
-
i have to say that i think the 3 door looks the better car (my last car was 3 door) but with family being planned the 5 door is a must. To be honest, when your driving it makes no difference how the car looks on the out side!
-
simple answer, if you are a family man........get a 5 door. Much more practical and Residuals are slightly higher.
If you dont have kids and no OLD relatives, or you like putting door dings in cars nxt to you. Get a 3 door.
Both look the bizzniss, ones not any better looking then the other imo. Both class.
-
I Like the look of the 3 dr better than the 5 door....and I have a 5dr!!
However it was a necessity due to elderly parents, family etc (my only concession )
If I didn't need the 2 extra doors or to ferry extras about then who knows what I would have bought.
-
IMO 5 door looks much better....................more masculine and less Renault Clio! Practicalities far superior with 5 door...........ease of reaching for seat belt, windows that open in the back to name two of many! I believe re-sale value is greater also.

masculine, haha!
There is nothing more masculine that a 3-door high-output-engine coupe, and 3-door GTI E30 is kind of like that.
-
The 3 door like a coupe??? Are we talking about a golf???
-
I have a 5-Door, and it is my first 5 Door ever. I think the 3 Door looks slightly better, but not enough to lose the increased practicality and the great feeling of space inside that the 5-Door has.
Plus I now have a big dog that takes up most the boot so luggage usually ends up on my back seats and the 5-Door is the easiest for that.
-
I had a mk4 gti 3dr and was good for a while, but then baby no1 came along and it got to much lifting in and out, so when we got the mk5 ED30 it was the 1st thing on the order for a 5dr.I was a bit concerned about a 5dr looks but it looks good plus i can get two kids and a buggy/pram in the car.and er its got between 312&322 bhp (depending on which day you r/r)so i think i will do fine against a 3dr version.

....k4ith, I have to say that those alloys suit a Steel Grey Ed30 extreeeemely well!
-
Both look great. I have 5 door as I have a family. I think the Golf (all models) is one of very few cars that looks good in five doors. The Ford Focus looks good with 3 doors but looks naff with 5 doors.
-
Think it all comes down to personal preference!
I'm waiting on a 5 dr, personally I think it looks better. It's more practical for me and also with things like tight parking spaces it's easier to get in and out.
I think the 5 door looks more balanced but there's always a prejudice that 3 doors are more sporty.
There's also a slight difference in cost!

At last! A bit of love for the pescaras!
-
Pescaras have always looked nice...dont know how people cna say pescaras dont look nice but then go and spend money on some BBS CH's....Russ.C im also really liking the look for your car....shame the ED30 isnt available here
Back on subject...currently driving a three door and its really annoying when you have the nicest car within your friends and its used to get to partys etc....people expect the driver to get out the car and every one knows the rule...the drivers seat doesnt move  Along with that its abit uncomfortable for my mum and dad to get in and out of the back as they are quite well...chubby so i think the 5 Door golf would be my preference...luckily the car looks good with 5 doors....the Audi A3 Sportback which my dad told me to look at was just  compared to the normal A3

It’s got to be a 3-door everytime. Had a 3-door Golf 4-Mo for 6-years with a family... no worries seats slide and fold away very easily & then go back to original position. My new ED30 (here in 2-weeks) also 3-door.
3-door looks so much more sporty, 5-door is practical but shouts Family man (or woman).
The Golf is pretty versatile so follow your heart, either way you’ll love it!

yes we are
2 doors does not = coupe!!
I got a van with 2 doors... could that be a coupe in disguise??
-
I bought a 5 door as we can't get 3 door GTis in NZ.
Thought, as most do, that a 3 door would look better but not so sure after seeing a few Ed30s around.
Think they are on a par really - and the practicality of the extra 2 doors just about swings it.
At the risk of starting another debate - go for the lighter colours - candy white or silver. The detailing stands out more in the lighter colours.

Well said... my Candy White ED30 arrives in just over a week now. Sleeping is now the problem.
It’s great to feel like a teenager again.

3 door all the way! It looks more sporty IMO. It was my highest priority when getting a new car that it HAD to have 3 doors. Even if they found me a 5 door with perfect spec, perfect condition etc. I wouldn't consider it in the slightest. I solved that problem by buying new in the end though!
Even if/when I have a family I will still go for a 3 door!

Wait untill you have to carry a baby chair in the back and trust me , you WILL be pi$$ed off after a while.
-
Can't you just put the baby in the boot - no chance of getting sick on the upholstery then
-
kermit, do u have any good pics of your car, as its the same spec as mine that im collecting within the nxt 7 days?
