The other thread made me get off my arse and take some pictures as promised ages ago...
For those that are interested, the bracket the Parrot is mounted on was custom made by me and my Dad, as I couldn't find one that would enable me to put it right up close to the driver. It is screwed into the dash, so its rock solid, very user friendly.

Looks lovely that! How much did the unit set you back if you don't mind? Off ebay? Would like to change mine, and I see the older nav units (chrome button version) can be had for £450 off ebay now which ain't bad, but that 510 does look the nuts
-
Cheers.
It was expensive and some people will no doubt be shocked at the cost, but I look on it as an investment, as the car didn't have any sat nav when I brought it and considering the RNS 510 is now a £1800 option (not available when I brought the car), the £1000 I paid off ebay seems like good value to me! The unit I got was brand new and 6 months later is fully working and does exactly what I wanted it to.
The only problem is the postcode entry, which I'm told is being fixed in the new firmware release 1022/2022.
-
parrot looks good,
but that head unit! i want one!
ive got a one of the older versions, do you think i could just buy one of those and basically just swap it out with my old one?
is the hard drive actually in the unit or will i need to store that seperately?
-
yes its a straight swap, bar buying two GPS leads, as they are slightly different, but all info on swaping can be found over at vwnavi.com.
as for the hard drive, yes its inside the the unit!

Yes, the hard drive is actually built into the unit allowing you to perform a straight swap of head units :)

Nice install - the RNS looks very good in the car
Price for these is coming down all the time - about Euro 900 now.
BTW - what's the small circle/indent on the upper right corner of the unit trim for ?
Cass
-
26 degrees, are you sick  mine never goes over 21, even in the winter. Oh and the headunit looks excellent

that will be the alarm intermittant red flashy when you lock up..... ?
-
These look the nuts! I'm guessing that little thing is an LED?

Is it a light sensor to change the brightness of the display and to change it over to "night time" theme colour scheme?
-
re: 26 degrees, I knew someone would pick up on that, I turned it right up as i just got in the car to take pics and it was freezing!
re: small circle spotted by cass, no idea, could be light sensor, but then again it could be an LED...
-
Lovely unit - just wish they would come down in price a bit. Re the firmware update when they fix the postcode issue - can you update the firmware via the SD card once the unit is installed or how else does the update work?
-
I believe you have to use a CD/DVD from VW to update firmware.

Thats right, beware however if you have 'misplaced' your maps DVD after saving the content to the hard drive as I believe flashing the firmware wipes the map content :nerd:
-
that true too, you need a MAPS DVD after firmware update.
-
want one
-
Unit looks slick but I thought the RNS 510 has bluetooth built in? Hence you wouldn't need the Parrot kit as well?
-
No, bluetooth is not as standard on the RNS 510. It is an option in Europe but not in the UK. For retro install, you have to buy a separate box and install it under the seat.
loads of info here:

Update to this answer, I updated my firmware from 0520 to 1020 and it did not wipe the maps or data on the drive.
-
Cool - thanks for the info.
-
im tempted in one of these. Cheapest on ebay is £848.
Is it a straight swap with an MFD2 or do i need any adapters or somit?
-
it is a straight swap, especially if you already have a GPS aerial. however you need to buy 2 little leads from VW, which cost me £27, basically converts the aerial leads already in the car to fit the slightly different RNS 510 connections.
this thread should help:

You need to make up a data dvd disc full of (mp3's),put that into the rns510 and then store them onto the hdd,or put the same onto a sd card
-
i think im gonner save up and get one of these in the next few months
-
yes you can just burn 4GB at a time to a data DVD and transfer them, or on an SD card, but only accepts 2GB ones and lower Im told.
