been toying with the idea of getting a MK4.
found this one and was a little smitten with the odd colour, nasty I know but it has kind of grone on me...
what do you think?
could do with lowering and some 17 inch chrome rims.

looks like a good spec for the money, only downside is that its the 1.8 and not the 1.8T
the 1.8 is 125 bhp and not that quick for a GTI, still good cars but you'll be getting left behind by GT TDI's and 1.8T's
-
get the tubby version mate, trust me you wont regret it!
-
I think you may be right, colud feel sluggish after owning a 2.0 16v MK3
1.8T it is then.

No don't look for one of those! It will make my already hard job finding one harder after Rhyso's recommendation!

still a bit pricy on the TDi's
can get a 1.8t Gti for around £2500
The TDi models seem to be much newer and henc more in the £4k region. and the high BHP versions seem to have a premium.
Always been a petrol head rather than a diesel head anyway, I like revs.

go for the 1.8t trust me its a big diffrence.
-
That colour grew on me too.
I honestly think you need a 1.8T as they are very nice and quick when you need it :)
-
As said really go for 1.8T- Get an insurance quote you might well be suprised
-
trying not to waste money myself on the mk3 saving for a 1.8T 20v mk4
go for a black 3door 1.8t   or gunmetal
-
As said really go for 1.8T- Get an insurance quote you might well be suprised
just did that and i am surprised !!
my mk3 works out about the same ??? !!!  can it be right ?
-
when i got my 18t it was 20 quid dearer than my mk3 8 v i was well happy lol
-
from what I can tell my 2.0 16v is a higher group than the MK4 1.8t so insurance shoould be no problem.
What are they like for reliability, always been a bit put off, whats a Turbo cost to replace?
-
hhhmmmm leather....

£2500 is a little tight imo.
Id save up about £3.5 at least! Preferably £4 - 4.5 (thats just me tho).
And silver is the best colour (thats not just me, thats fact).
-
Yes i say go for the 20v turbo no the non turbo.
But get diesel if you can afford lol
-

Values of a MK4 1.8t seem to range from £2500 up to £6000 whys that then?
Been looking at 99/00 plates.
although plan B is one of these, I like this one....
you get more for you monies. and 180bhp, apparently.

the later models are going to be the 180 bhp version and obviously being younger are going to have less miles and be in better condition hence more money.
you could always consider the A3 or even a skoda octavia all using the 1.8T and same chassis
-

Been there and done that, went through a phase of being sure i was going to get the A3, then thought about the Leon but always came back to the MK4, just looks soooo much better imo.
-
I am old skool at heart but would like a modern motor, still can bring myself to buy a Skoda though, just can't do it. Guy at work has the VRs Octavia, its nice, but its a Skoda, can't do it and can't make me.
Audi is out as I need the 5 door thing, that leaves the Golf or Leon.
Leon has more power but probably feels cheaper than the Golf, its a toughie, will have to get out and test some.
