Hi all,
I don't know why but I have developed an urge to buy a mk4 R32. Just wondering if anyone on here could give me any advice, pros, cons, good points, bad points etc. I love my Anni so am therefore familiar with the mk4s but cant help being more and more attracted to the V6 4 Motion Beast! I have had a look at insurance and it seems pretty good, only 2 years NCB but am happy with the quote. Please Help!
Many Thanks

You will need an extra bank account to pay for the petrol!! I would love an r32 but could never justify the cost of fuel. (and only 240 bhp out of a 3.2???)
-
well my mileage is minimal as I have a company van. I put roughly 6000 miles on any car in a year so that's not too much of an issue. I see your point re. 240bhp, but without putting a turbo on it, what other ways could I get more power out of it?
I always thought a remap is less effective on a non-turbo car isn't it? had a quick look - 6.6 secs 0-60:thats still pretty rapid!

Remap would put about 15bhp on  But yeah that 0- 60 time is rapid!!
-
you can get 0-60 in 6.6 in a remaped 1.8T. but the r32 is very new id love 1
-
stick with the Anni mate; get it mapped and enjoy owning a rare MKIV :afro:

I was chatting to a chap at Brands who had his R32 turboed, and that IS the win.

if your first name happens to be sultan and you also happen to own an oil refinery then, you'd be able to run an R32, personally i'd stick with the anniversary (although trade it in for a TDI one)
whilst the anni isn't going to be as quick, standard as the R32 IMO its much more special due to the limited numbers.
if you want R32 performance then you could basterdise your anni, just don't ruin the looks please.
-
I really wanted an r32 too, but chose against it for a number of reasons which most of the chaps have already said:
1) the fuel cost is going to be heavy
2) its not powerful for a 3.2 engine - look at the power from a 3.0 litre BMW (or a BMW M3), much more power, the VR6 engine is just not as efficient as some of its rivals.
3) a 1.8T is much more of a sleeper, especially if left in normal guise and just tweaked underneath. This means that it be can run reasonably cheap day to day (running, maintainence and insurance), but is still guaranteed to put a smile on your chevy chase  when you floor it - even better if you take an unexpecting motor on and win!
4) with all the kits available on the market, some people will think you have just kitted up a basic model - which is why i love the 1.8T - power without the flash!
-
The fuel is a big issue BUT if you can afford it then you should remember the r32 is such a good spec car compared to the 1.8t. Suspension, brakes, interior, its not just about speed with them its just the fact its an r32 - the build quality is so much better!
-
Ash, i dont think I would agree with the r32 being "better built" than a 1.8T. Thats like saying that they do a crap job of putting together the lower spec models - which I find it hard to beleive.
-
They aint crap but in general the build quality on the r32 is better trust me. People use the bushes from the r32's and put them on 1.8t's because they are better. The 1.8t's have better quality parts then the 1.4 (trust me I know) and the r32 is a better model than the gti
-
You considered the A3 3.2 Quattro? Same engine, transmission (maybe different suspension/front ARB, though??), but they do come a bit cheaper, IIRC. E46 M3 is the future, tho!!
-
E46 M3 is the future, tho!!
IMO BMW = C*NT
i'd have an RS4 over an M3 any day.

Think i need to stay quite till i get my Golf!

Is the new shape A3 3.2 Quatro the same engine as the MK5 or MK4 R32?
Either way I have driven on of them (bosses car, rasion run) and ohhhhhhhhh how Id love that noise and power everyday.
-

So what you meant to say is the R32 is better specced, not better built.
-
Yeah ok then better spec'd
-
lol better built :D
-
I could really stick my neck out on the line here and say that all the cars are qually well built, in respect of the type of car.
ie: the 1.4 is well built, given the type of engine it has, the power, need to brakes etc etc. The 1.8T again is better specced mechanically than the 1.4, but only because it needs to be to cope with the power and all, and then the R32 follows on accordingly.
But then thats probably just me being pedantic about it!
End of the day, I guess if i had the money not to worry about the running costs, of course i would have an R32 - who are we kidding here! But then if money was no object....991 GT3 anyone?
-
But then thats probably just me being pedantic about it!
lol reallllly ! NOOO !! :D

I think its the lowest form of wit :D

Agreed 100%
-
Just a few figures for you to think about.....
2000 2.8 V6 4motion
29 Yr old, clean licence standard car, circa 6k miles per annum (the rest on my fireblade) [5yrs NCD] - £370 fully comp
98/99 RON @ 230 miles for full tank - £70 every two and half weeks (london prices)
I can afford the above, but cant keep justifying to the missis that I need the 4mo and the fireblade
The R32 was going to be the next step for me, but be prepared to have your wallett/purse/satchel ready!
Stick with the anni
(seriously, considering Derv, seriously)
Ps. 0-60 on the blade is around 3 seconds!
-
Yeah but its only got 2 wheels
-
As suggested re Audi a3. It may have the same engine, but look at the R32!It's looks so much better . I'm struggling to find a proper reason not to buy R32 although I thank you for your comments and guidance and welcome any more suggestions.
My Anni is thirsty already (25-30 mpg on a good day) and around 20ish+ on a normal day and my style of driving isn't gonna change regardless of geting an R32 or not, therefore petrol not being too much of an issue - how uneconomical can an R32 be? Also i'm not gonna have to put too much more money in to get an R32. Am I mad?!?!
-
If you do get one, what colour?
:undecided:
-
I really like it in blue  good colour or not?

Hi, although i have a mk 5 R32 go for it jonny!! They are an awesome bit of kit.The 4wd is awesome, the noise is unreal, and believe you me you get a lot more respect in a R32.People seem to have a lot more intrest in a 32.
Fair comment people say remap this, chip that, and a turbo,d engine will be faster but that V6 is a peach extremely smooth and very civilised putting its power down.
The fuel issue isnt an issue in my opinion, i do approx 10000 miles a year and they ant as thirsty as people think,At the end of the day if you run a performance car you cant run it on a shoestring. When i first got mine i was driving home at 55 mph crapping myself about mpg but honestly you,l get by.
I,m on my second MK V R32 so ok i am biased but having also owned a MK5 GTI i,l never go back to a turbo.
Also smeone mentioned a e46 M3 earlier in the thread! I actually traded a 05 plate e46 m3 in for my current R32 so i have had the best of all worlds.
M3 equals awesome car very quick but totally rock hard ride f***ing scary in the wet, a fortune to maintain and the build quality was no where near as good as my golf.
As the salesmen who sold me my first 32 said " YOU ONLY LIVE ONCE GO FOR IT"
JONNY GOO FOR IT!!
Chrissy.

Thanks very much for your reply. My mind was pretty much made up as im sure you gathered! Bad news though im afraid. look in the 'nonsense' thread and find my recent post. the bar steward insurance company are messing me about and it doesnt look like im gonna be able to get it until around may/june when my policy ends. I got my hopes up too as it said i could be insured online
A very disappointed Jon
-
Dont panic mate,
Just wait the for the right car to come along, and it will. The good thing about 32,s is they hold thier value extremlely well as i,m sure you know.Sit tight and shop around till you get your insurance sorted, you wont be dissapointed.
Sometimes you have to be patient but set your mind to it and it will happen.More people have commented on my32,s than all my other cars and i,ve had a few in my time, they seem to have a respect factor you dont get in many other cars, very subtle, not overstyled and excellent "Q" car appeal. The sort of car that only people"in the know" know what it is.
Give me a 32 over a jap ricer piece of sh!t anyday!Hope you get one anyway mate, dont give up. The knockers who tell you dont do it are only jealous!!!
-
how uneconomical can an R32 be?
Well, one of my best mates has an R32, he reckons 17mpg average city driving, 30ish motorway & he's got it as low as 6.5mpg thrashing it.......
-
sorry should of said those figures are the averages. he's got it under 3mpg under hard acceleration!
-
That is quite shocking actually lol but I had the anni down to 8mpg on a track. Anyone know how much it'd cost to fill up and also the fuel tank capacity?bet its quite a few beans to fill it up!
Jon
-
8 on a track is by no means bad !
-
i think you're going to be looking at £60 (minimum) to fill her up, not sure on the exact price of the "good stuff"
-
JUST ABOUT 60bar TO FILL MINE UP (MK5) AND A RANGE OF "only" 235 MILES!!! ouch.
Worth it though, doing my bit for global warming.
-
Worth it though, doing my bit for global warming.
 :afro:
-
well chrissy, think im gonna have to buy one and do my bit too!! what's better, full leather or part leather? how well does it wear? They don't do cloth do they? (not that i'd have it on an r32). Atm, my anni is about £55 to fill up and doesn't do 300 miles on that so not a lot different although 235 miles is pretty crap lol!!
-
With mine being a MK5 its full leather anyway. You can spec a mk5 32 with cloth but they are few and far between. But apart from the recaros you can get in the mk5,the mk4 seats look amazing.
Mind you it costs £300 a year for road tax mind!!!!
I just put six months on mine but that was £165!!!!
Still they can tax me all day long it wont stop me having performance cars ever!!
Chrissy
-
is there a lot of difference in the way of performance between the mk4 and 5?if ive gotta wait 6 months - 1 year then the 5's will have come down in price so a 5 could be an option. £300 is a lot lol thought mine was quite bad!
To be honest, I don't know all this tax band bull***t has made any difference to anyone in the way of what cars they buy. I know I wouldn't not buy an R32 cos it has a £300 tax disc!!Dunno if anyone else has been deterred from a car by it's tax price??
Jon
ps the full leather is looking and sounding very nice
-
is there a lot of difference in the way of performance between the mk4 and 5?
i think the main advantage is going to be the better chassis as the MK5 is fully independent, however go anywhere near the MK5 section and all you'll see is how the ED30 is better than the R32 (MK5)
personally i'd go for the MK4 though as the shape is much nicer IMO
-
From Evo magazine:-
Aesthetics (interior & exterior) - Mk4 R32 wins (I agree)
Dynamics - Mk5 R32 wins (I haven't driven either - Sadly!!)
