I can recommend Halfords Satin Black. Keyed up the surface with some wet a dry. Happy with the finish so gonna try it on the car tomorrow, daylight permitting.

nice, more pix when on

....That looks really good .
There's a tradition for GTI's to have black badges since the Mk1. That's a smart satin finish.

i wanted to get a spare one before i did mine, but im thinking whats the point, if i need to return it to silver or dont like it, then ill get one...
-
Finally got round to putting it on in the daylight. I'm pretty happy with it, makes the front look more business like

I like
When can you come up and do mine
-
....It's a subtle change but does make the front look a bit 'meaner' and is a much better alternative to debadging as some of those crazy Americans do.
Nice one!

my next mod

You can make one out of that glass you'll have left over  I don't mind spraying one up if you can do without your badge for a few days.

fab my next mod defo  , may even look at removing the rear one too!
-
I had a play around with the rear one and covered it with a silver cover, it looks a bit odd (on a silver car anyway). When the weather gets a bit warmer I might knock up a template and see what it looks like black.

looks cracking that komenda! I'd love to do mine but I'm sure I'd make a complete balls up of it. If you get a minute could you do us (or me should I say!) a bit of a walkthrough of what you did? I no nothing of preparing surfaces for painting etc. Cheers.

Hope this helps
1. First thing I did was wash the surface with some warm soapy water to get rid of any moulding waxes or oils that would stop the paint bonding.
2. Once dry I rubbed the surface down so the paint has something to bond to. You don't want to leave any surface scratches so I used 2 fine papers, 600 to rub down the bulk of the surface area and then 800 to do the edges, a rubbing block made this easier.
3. Make sure you rub down all the edges on the inside of the VW as this is where the paint will be weakest and will chip or flake off (careful not to scratch the black plastic under the chrome VW)
4. Once the surface appears non-shiny all over (you may see some bronze colouring, this is fine) you need to clean all the dust off. If you have Brush cleaning spirit or alcohol this works best. Then rinse it under some water and dry off.
5. To paint I found it easier to hang it from something, I used a light shade and some wire coat hanger, securing it with masking tape to the back of the badge.
6. When spraying don't spray directly at the badge. Start slightly to the side then move across at a continuous speed holding the can about 10inches away (not a mans 10inches either, a real 10inches ) I used halfords primer and Halfords Satin black. Matches the black of the grill perfectly when clean.
7. Allow each coat to dry and build up until you are happy with the look, ensuring that you do all around the edge. I used one coat of primer and 2 coats of black. I dried mine in the kitchen oven at 60 degrees for a couple minutes after each coat then left it out overnight to dry completely.
Oh and to get the badge off just twist it a quarter turn to the left and pull out, very easy. Almost to easy actually if some thieving git takes a fancy to it.

top man, thanks very much for that
