Well chaps, I need to finish off my boot build and was wondering what kind of design to have.
Should I go for a stealth install to one side of the boot?
Should I add another sub and have a symetrical install at each side of the boot?
Should I go for something with a bit more show?
I was thinking of having the install done in brushed aluminium fabrication with moulded fibre glass backs to fit the arches, and re-upholster the boot in grey and black alcantara, but not sure what it would look like in the flesh.
An alternative is to re-upholster the boot in standard cloth and hide the install completely.
What are everyone's opinions?
Any other ideas.
No gold lame jokes please

I'm assuming your talkin about filling your boot space with something that will blow your ears off - well i'm afraid id recommend neither as all it will do is add weight and blunt performance and that is a deffo no no in my book!
However if you will insist on having tinitus later in life then you may as well show it............. but why, who really will be impressed that is worth knowing???? :undecided: :undecided:
Sorry all IMO
I'll :lipsrsealed: now....
-
middle, dont spend too much on the install and dont go too cheep. middle!
also the spare wheel is inside the boot!
-
Hmmm i already got a great stereo! mine is hidden.... up front... under the bonnet... ooops thats my V6!!
Sorry hurd! Couldnt resist
-
stealthy one sided , but powerfull , mostly hidden with a few subtle touches in line with cars usual interior.
Dare I say it you 'could' bring in the lines of the ed30 seats ! but then again no lol
but for me very subtle , good quality hard hitting sound , maybe with highlights to match ed30 trim (not too much mind)
besides think of bhp/ton , weight distribution etc , dont want to spoil your car after the remap

In Order To Have A Sound System Would You Need To Change The Head Unit???
Or Will The Stock Head Unit Do??

To have a decent sound system you definitely need to change the head-unit. The stock head units (yes even the ones which supply the sound-pack!) use DSP (digital sound processing) which work with the standard VW speakers. The stock speakers are poor quality and even the soundpack system speakers are just about passable as low end aftermarket items.
I've already changed my head-unit and door speakers and have a 4 way amp powering the front component speakers and the 10" sub (which currently resides in a temporary sub box ) :nerd:

I Was Seriously Thinking Of Doing A Boot Install In My Golf... 2 3000 watt Subs... One On Either Side Enclosed In Fibre Glass...  But This Was If I Didnt Have To Change The VW Stock Sat Nav....
I Guess The Sound System Idea Has Gone Out The Window...

WoW!! You older VDub guys are serious about your ICE!
Blacked out windows next i guess??

JL 13" w7, 1000.1, 300/4, 3way comps too.
wanna put it in the golf. but cant get the cable from the bonet to cabin :-| plus its cold!
-
the JL Audio things are very very nice....i was considering the JL 12 W12 i think it was but the price was abit ridiculous at about 900 euros for the sub i think it was plus about another grand for the amp to power the sub
-
stupid image host! should work now :)
the JL prices have come down a lot now not so bad as they were a year+ ago.
always loved jl from the day i first heard them...
-
Im sure they sound as good as they look...G Unit use them aswell

IMO, I really like Stealth installs where everything is hidden with a few perspex 'windows'.
Does anyone know the speaker sizes for the GTi? Ive had a search and cant find any information, especially for the rear ones?
Hurdy, which size were the ones that you dropped into the front doors on your ED30?
Ta!
-
i have always had subs and amps in my cars but for some reason i just cant do it to the gti, i have all the gear in my garage aswell  just think it would.......make it chav :lipsrsealed:
*duck and hides behind my can of redbull*
if anybodys interested i have 2 alpine type X 12" subs and a alpine 1500w poweramp. (i had 2 but sold one) not being used at the moment if any body wants?? oh and an audiobann imortal 4000w sub (very very very heavy)

6" woofer, 3" mid and 1" tweeters up front.
6" coax in rear.
10" sub in the boot
Look on the link below for the Hertz products. They are really good quality speakers

Brilliant, thanks Hurdy!
My budget probably wont stretch to a new headunit yet (my service is costing £230.30 )
Will the hertz speakers sound much better than the standard ones with the stock headunit?

Where do I start?!?
The sound is in a different league to the stock items. Less noise interference, better range, more separation and clarity of frequencies. Even the Bose system I had in the Audi doesn't come close to the quality of sound that the system I have now gives. My system isn't the loudest you can get, but the sound is perfectly balanced and with a high quality track it sounds virtually like live music.

were these a direct replacement Hurdy? if so do you have the part numbers u used and prices pal

Right then
Components up front the best set up is a 3 way of which I had the HSK163 (£300), but for my car it involved extra wiring in of the third speaker (tweeter). The extra wiring wouldn't be needed if you have the 10 speaker system which already has tweeters up front. Alternatively, if you have the 8 speaker standard system you could go for the 2 way component system up front which is the HSK165. The loss of the tweeters up front with the 2 way aren't too crucial as you would still have the high frequencies of a tweeter in the rear with the coax speakers.
In the rear the speakers I had fitted were 2 way coax's - HCX165's with a 200 Watt peak output
One speaker housing contains both a woofer and the tweeter. - £120
This gets around one of the problems that the standard rear tweeters have, in that they are located just behind the drivers's ears and give an annoying tsss tsss noise at higher volumes. The coax speakers are based where the lower rear standard woofers normally are and drop the high pitch of the tweeters away from your ears to give a better balance to the high frequency output.
You can look at the speakers through the earlier link I posted under the Hi-energy range, by looking in the system and the coax sections.
The 10" sub in the boot is a 900 watt HX 250D - £165
Up to date prices and distributer is in the link below.

Do You Need To Change The Head Unit??... In My Case The Sat Nav... Or Does It Work Wit The Original Head Unit
I deliberately didn't spec up the standard head unit as I knew I was going to change it. You could use the standard sat nav unit, but I wouldn't. The reason being that the VW head units use Digital sound processing which is set to allow for the shortcomings of the VW speakers. The VW speakers are made down to a very cheap price and as such have poor volume and frequency handling characteristics (when compared to aftermarket speakers). The VW head units allow for these poor characteristics and so when you fit upgraded aftermarket speakers they are basically handicapped by the VW head units DSP system and don't give their best outputs. To truly get the best output from aftermarket front component speakers, you need to have an amplifier fitted. If you run them off the head unit then they will also be underpowered and not give their full potential.
I didn't want millions of speakers in the boot and so simply opted for one decent sub that has a good low frequency response and a decent power output. This also meant that I could power the one sub and the front speakers from a 4 way amp rather than having to fit two dedicated amps (which I thought would be overkill). The result means that the front speakers are fully powered and with the aftermarket head unit also gives better sound control. :nerd:

I must be getting old.... (29) because I don't see the point of adding a few hundred kilos of amp and mdf bassboxes to a car designed to be quick, nimble and fun to drive.
Surely that just defeats the object?

I had the sound system already in the car when I went to Inters last year and it still did 0-60 in 5.66 secs  before the remap.
