Title: When the time comes
Post by: OutlawStar on 28 January 2008, 22:06
I've been thinking about when my golf finally comes to the end of her life and its made me think of a few questions

1. Am i the only guy on here with a high mileage car, it seems all you guys have lower miles
2. What options do i have once she dies i.e engine transplant. and what are the costs.

My plan is hopefully once i leave uni to get a full time job and be able to keep her running, would an engine transplant change the mileage to that of the new engine?

Cheers guys just getting paranoid as the miles clock up!

Not sure on the cost of a transplant. Ashmond has just finished his. maybe you could PM him.

I dont think the miles on the clock will be reset if you put a new engine in.

if its a like for like engine swap  eg AUM for AUM then it should cost no more than £1000 as its just going to be lift the old lump out and put the new one in, you're not going to have to change the running gear etc

i always though the odometer would show the miles on the engine and not the car.

The clocks cannot be put down (on the record) they can only be put up, my engine has done 42k and my clocks still show 79k. What they say to do is get a seperate clock for the engine's mileage.

i read somewhere (ross-tech site i think) that the clusters will allow for the odometer to be changed once assuming you're got the code for it.

pretty certain vagtacho can change the mileage too.

can't remember his name but one of the lads that came over from ukmkiv's does and IIRC he went to the bluewater meets so might hangout at the brands ones too.

to change mileage you need vag-com and the knowledge...its the clocks that keep the mileage (so swapping for a lower mileage set gives you lower mileage!!).. some vag specialists will reset your mileage for about £25

my mk3 has had 4 different clock sets and currently show 30k more miles than its done..luckily i have photos etc to show true reading
