Just one pic for now. The weather's atrocious so I'll do some better pics when it cheers the feck up.

Mini review of experience of an edition 30 after just 30 miles.
COLOUR
Oh...my...god... In the flesh, white looks just stunning. In the twilight, in the sun... doesn't matter, it just looks like an ipod on wheels. The guy who pdfd it agrees. There was a black one behind it when I picked it up.... for me at least, seeing them both together, white knocks the spots off black (my second choice). There are curves in the sides of the body I'd never noticed - check out the mega size picture in the link above.
DSG
Oh...my...god. It was a bit of a gamble choosing this. I went for it as someone who usually hates autos, but was swayed by the writeups. I'd never tried it myself. I've never known an auto box like it. When you're just bimbling, it changes gear without you even noticing. It's only on acceleration where you notice that it's doing something. I've not tried the paddle stuff much yet - I'm sure i'll stick it into manual for those twisty roads, but the effect on plain old 'D' without even any revs (running in) is of effortless, quality acceleration. No grab on moving away - wonderfully smooth, and I'm going to have to concentrate on keeping my right foot light because its clear it wants to get up and go.
Build quality/luxury
Coming from a pug 306, the difference is profound - far more than you'd guess from pictures, because everything feels just better. No squeaks or rattles at all, very quiet at 70mph, totally solid, road noise from rough surfaces better insulated than the old car, controls lovely to use, even the cheapo RCD300 radio is quite nice. Red and blue lighting effect is just class, seats are fabulous (both ergonomically and in look -the fabric and leather together look to me better than the full leather option). All in all, it's straightforward, well designed, and a nice place to be.
Lighting Tricks
I went for the 'luxury pack 1', which gives you the area lighting and mirror motors to pull them in and drop the passenger one while reversing. I love the 'Auto' light setting. At night, when you blip the car, it lights up the area by the doors, as well as the surrounding area with the headlights - on the white car this looks rather spectacular :-)... a bit like an aeroplane coming in to land! Then, inside, there are all sorts of lights in useful places -glove box, above the vanity mirror, footwells, reading lights front and rear, and my favourite...2 red spotlights that dimly illuminate the area around the console and armrest... looks like it'd take off and fly to mars.
Other nice things
-hooks and tie points for luggage in the boot
-12 volt socket in the boot
-The auto wipers - On a showery day, they just did precisely what I wanted. The wipers are silent when they work and smear free. They also hide away when not on, which is lovely.
-The aircon feed into the glove box
-The electric lumbar support - goes 4 ways
-Electric seats (though it feels like you wet yourself at first till you get used to it!)
-Got to mention the xenons - fabulous, and I love the way they blink when they turn on.
-pescaras. Never really look as good in photos as in the flesh. They suit white perfectly, fill the arches really well, and looking down the side of the car it just is this solid slab like look with the wheels perfectly aligned - in short,
Parking
Unfortunately the only downside so far. The rear windscreen of the old car was a lot lower, so you could see the bonnet of cars behind, though the powered passenger mirror adjuster makes it easy to avoid scuffing your alloys. In the golf, it's not so easy. I decided against rear parking sensors because they spoil the bumper, but if you're a lousy parker anyway, I recon that it would be a good option. I'll just have to work out how far I've got with some trial and error :-)
Upgrades planned
A blue flashing light to complete the illusion. Make way for me!
-
good choice and you got the best colour
-
Great write up there Andy,
You've finally found out what it is like to be a GTI ED30 owner
DSG is sublime IMO and I wouldn't go back to a manual now - ever!
You're right about the nice little touches that add to the ambience of the car and the quality feel of ownership.
I had the RCD300 too, but it didn't last for long
Park reverse sensors do spoil the rear line of the car - I agree. I don't need them now, as I have a rear park camera instead
Here's hoping you get loads of enjoyment out of it and when it's run in.....WOW!
-
Hi Hurdy,
A rear park camera? Wow! What did you replace the radio with? (My budget only currently allows me to install a super-8 cine camera on the parcel shelf, which I'm not sure will be a benefit, it blocking out what little view out the back I have)
-
I have a Kenwood DNX 7200 with a double din 7" screen. As soon as you put the DSG in reverse the camera automatically shows the rear view through the screen
It is excellent for high kerbs, low walls etc.
-
Hurdy -Ah right - I read about that. Where does the camera get mounted?
-
No bad carpet jokes please (see pic below)

Wow!
Certainly something to think about for the future (once my bank balance has recovered)
Cheers hurdy.

I removed the picture of my white E30 and replaced it with pics of the most beautiful city in the world (St. Peterburg), but I am a die-hard CANDY WHITE E30 fan!
Congrats on your new blond friend! Now sadle it and ride it! Yeeeeehhaaaa!

Congrats Mate

Thats a lovely looking motor. I must admit that I didnt like white at first (Much like I didnt like Pescaras at first) and its really grown on me.
Nice review of the car too. Hope you have a ball in it.
Mike

I wount get involved in the black vs white debate.

Now where is my local revo dealer?? how much will a white respray cost?? any body want to swap there pescaras with my monza 2's!!!!

Hey Joesgti, that reminds me. I asked about a service after run-in, and the guy said there wasn't any need. (I did ask for an oil pack to top it up after reading about that on the forum). He seemed quite sure that the car'd be fine until the service (10k or whatever it is). Is that right?
Revo remap:... Now there's an idea. I shall keep it out of my mind till the spring, somehow. I must confess to liking the idea of the ED30 because its engine was a *detuned* version... how kind of VW to provide such a cracking base on which to build.
-

Chris.
Hi Chris, yeah definitely agree! All the colour stuff is just a bit of friendly joshing around. It's not like I'd be turning the other way if a non-white gti came along. (For a start, I don't think I'll ever drive past another white one - seeing another GTI on the road is rare enough even now...)
The only thing I'd hope is that the people who prefer white don't talk themselves out of it as the 'sensible' option, because
(a), let's face it, a dirty car is a dirty car and black and grey owners won't be any happier with a mud splattered gti
(b), unlike a white vauxhall chevette, a white GTI has loads of showroom appeal and should be a doddle to part exchange in 2 or 3 years, and as an added bonus, its body won't consist mainly of filler by that age... You don't tend to see many old Chevettes. Why is that?
-
Old Chevettes. You are showing your age now

Sigh...pics make me miss mine
V6 roar makes up for it though

<<V6 roar makes up for it though>>

When I was looking for reviews of E30, yours was the first I read, Peter! Thank you!
Now, did you write a review of the TT? How is it compared to E30? And why did you actually sell Der Golf?
-

We bought a 9 month old high spec 3.2 last October - the almost identical looking one that was in the showroom recently was very high spec...nearly £40k    which is silly money for a TT!

Thanks :) I still lurk here to keep up with things
I traded in the Golf as my fiance and I had three cars between us at that time, and it made sense to go down to 2
She wanted to keep a TT, and a deal came up on a used V6 Quattro TT Mk2, with DSG, magnetic ride dampers, & various other options. Someone had also paid extra for a special order Audi Exclusive colour to get Sprint Blue on the TT (not in standard colour palette) and the deal I got offered was pretty good :)
I'd have another Edition 30 like a shot...trouble is that we need a diesel for her commute, and this TT is just too good to give up
-
Can't say I ever got excited about the 3.2 in the TT, now the 240bhp 1.8 I did consider.
Them Yanks once again sticking there noses in....."Hyyyyaaaaa allllll I waaant a 6 silinder, zillin cubic inches of engin in my European Ardi TT"
-
Great looking car  Looks just like mine
Still waiting for semi-decent weather to get some pics of it though!

Hi golfgirl. What good taste you have!
I've given up on nice photos for the time being. We're going mountain biking this weekend so the car will probably end up covered inside and out with huge amounts of mud.

O rite, the TT really looks good in sprint blue, I guess you got yours a good bit cheaper than that then. I seen a sprint blue TT last nite which was a 57 plate so I take it the one from the showroom is sold now. lovely car you have got urself there!!
