Title: Second skin door membranes?
Post by: barry sprout on 21 December 2007, 16:17
Hi
I have a rear footwell leak problem in my 3 door. I just can't find where its coming from but it's a nightmare at this time of year...
Anyway I checked the door membranes and they look OK.
I've read loads of advice about this topic and one recommendation is to "put a second sheet of plastic over the lower part of the door and tuck it in at the bottom" - can anyone explain exactly what is involved here, it doesn't really make sense to me (inside the original membrane? outside it? tuck it in where????).
Another peide of advice is checking drain holes in the inner skin of the door (not the main drain holes in the bottom of the door) apparently there are drain holes on the inner side along where the membrane is stuck down to drain water that gets pooled at this point - but I sure can't see these on my car and if they were on this side surely it would defeat the object of the membrane anyway and let water through to the door seal area?!
Confused

Take your door card off and spray a hose down the outside of the window forcing water to run down the inside of the door. Take a look and see if there are any leaks in the membrane.

I can email you a pic if you want?

Nice one thanks for that advice.

Any clue about this extra tucked in plastic membrane trick?

Yes, if you PM me your email address I can email you a picture that shows how it should be done.

Hey that's brilliant

Thanks for the help.

Now all I need to do is sort the door membranes, replace the door seals, get the drivers door sag fixed, find the bulkhead leak, take out the carpets, dry the soundproofing and relpace the heater matrix that's steaming me windscreen up.
By midsummer I should have a warm dry car!

where is your leak coming from in the bulkhead? by the way, before you waste money on window seals make sure your door metal isnt bent out slightly as i bought some new ones once and they still didnt fit flush to the window, i think the metal strip that holds the seal was knackered too.

find the bulkhead leak

There's a big round hole on the passenger side, easily seen under the bonnet. I just ducktaped it to stop any leak but you can buy round metal covers from VW, not sure on the name.

Why does everyone seem to have heater problems? I only get luke warm air even after engine has warmed up; so annoying.

i also had heater problems and my work mate said to change the bypass valve just before the heater matrix took the old 1 off shoved a hose pipe down through the matrix to clean it out new valve on and refill the coolant hey presto jobs a goodun and ive got boiling heat again :)

Hi folks

Just an update.... I had a look at my doors. It's a 3 door and when I take the door card off there is a metal support that forms part of the door surround connecting it to the central part, therefore I can't do the internal plastic sheet tucked in at the bottom cos it can't be tucked in where the support is.

If you compare the pics on page one of this thread you'll see what I mean - the blue door of Blazing Storm is a 5 door and the plastic tucks in, wheras the white car of Gernster is a 3 door and you can clearly see the vertical strut in the middle that would prevent an internal membrane working.

Guess I'll just try an external one but TBH it looked pretty good anyway.

My problem may well be the door seal? The door drops on the drivers side - but when it's shut surely that lifts the door back into the correct position against the seal. It appears to fit well along the top seal when shut - can't see the bottom seal when shut

It's only the drivers side rear footwell that gets wet. The car has been stood in heavy rain and it's saturated - so it's nothing to do with driving. The door card is damp along the bottom but not wet and the membrane appears sealed along the bottom and in very good nick.

I can see that there is damp 'in' the door seal itself, ie the channel/groove on the car side of the main bulbous part of the door seal.

I don't think the water is coming through the door membrane, the only other thing I can think of is water is running round the door edges from above and finding its way past the door seal along the sill section because presumably the door is not sealing properly against the seal????

I thought my door membrane was OK but running the hose down the window showed water was still running down small gaps at the bottom of the membrane. Try it yourself and you'll see. That or wait for it to rain and sit in the car with the door card off and watch for yourself.

If the doorcard is wet/damp that tells you the membrane is probably leaking.

had this problem with my last golf. I adjusted the catch on the pillar too make the door sit tighter against the seal and hey presto
