Title: handbrake!
Post by: jammac on 13 December 2007, 15:16
Ive heard of peoples rear brake calipers siezing on but....... when i finished my nightshift last night i got into my nice cold car only to find my handbrake was stuck on or should i say frozen on!!!!!!

what a b!tch! it took ages to to free off and stunk like a badgers armpit!

i think ill be leaving it in gear when its that cold in future.....i.e. tonight.

could this of happened purely because of the cold? maybe i went through some water before parking up? or?????????

My old white one used to do this all the time and then failed the next MOT on knackered calipers.

Same! Made a couple of slow roundabouts and corners interesting as i could feel the back dragging round

My door handle also snapped that morning (4am), i can only assume it was due to being brittle in the -4 degrees that we had

press the foot brake aswel when the MOT tester shouts ''handbrake on''

a hammer and WD40 free's them up SOMETIMES.
Disconnect your handbrake cables to see if they free up. They could be seized.

I have to leave mine in gear. Dont drive too long with it stuck on. Last time my rear brake nearly caught fire!

Im running mk3 calipers and they have seized. If your looking to upgrade then get mk4 ones

will mk3 and mk4 calipers go straight on?
Title: Re: handbrake!
Post by: hobbiniho on 14 December 2007, 19:13
yeh but for mk4 ones you need different brake lines they have a different type of fitting

30 minutes ago dropping someone off I had to park on a little hill on the driveway and when pulling my handbreak up it felt and sounded like something snapped and now I have to pull the hand break higher up to engage it...

whats snapped/broke/....?

Might have snapped one of the teeth that hold the handbreak in place :undecided: do you push the button in when u pull it up or do allow it to do the clicking thing all the time?

i got mk4 callipers going on mine, its been covered loads, braided lines are available for the conversion, these are £27 so you need to be getting the callipers at a very good price to offset the cost of these adapter lines i guess

heres the link for the adapters that im using:

Golf 2 with Golf 4 rear callipers £27

ok kool, im assuming here then if you did the rear caliper mk4 conversion with the braided hoses you are talking about you would then only need to buy the 4 hose kit for the front brakes? rather than the 6 hose kit?

as recently pointed out to me, some inline 4 kits, cover the front flexi hoses, and to the rear calliper.. not the ones over the rear beam and the fronts as id expect..  but some do? i still need to look into that as im not really doing any work to here till next year now.

Well I forgot all about this time old problem and this morning mine are frozen on. Should have been at work 25 mins ago but still at home waiting for them to unfreeze. Must remember from now on to leave it in gear in till the spring!
