Title: is this true? *pics added of keyed areas*
Post by: dubsport on 10 December 2007, 19:08
i was told today (by a rather c*ckey mechanic  lol)

"if you spray a car matt black then it will be sh!t. if a bird sh!ts on it, or someone puts thier hand on it, it f**ks the paint up and you will have to spray it again, why do you think people laqcuer and polish their cars?"

Is this true? I t cut my car once a month to stop it blooming ... dont want to be spraying her every week

Dec: Depends on how much people care about the paint work of their cars.
But surely some piggy poo or a hand won't damage the paint work that much that it will warrant a new paint job every few months?

Matt black will stain, and eventually turn white!   If you want a non gloss finish to your car, you need to go for a semi matt black, that is somewhere between a satin, and matt finish.
Matt paint is normal topcoat paint (non metallic) that has a chalk substrate added, the more you put in, the more matt the paint will go, till you eventually end up with a finish that resembles a black board. Years ago, Ford XRs had their door frames painted semi matt black, this was generally known as an "Eggshell finish"...matt, but not too matt, and no real cleaning problems...
If your golf still has its origional slam/headlamp panel fitted, that's what you should be aiming for!

as said, why ??? if yours was a rat candiate then fairy snuff, but yours looks v tidy mate.

the reason is:

someone has keyed the front off side panel
reversed into the drivers door (and drove off)
dent in the boot
bonnet is folded where someone has tried to get in (has bonnet lock so they couldnt)
keyed along the rear nearside quatre
dent in the passenger door
and its that horrible faded red colour ... cmaeras are good at lying ;)

i am also speaking from experience too as i had a matt black camper 5 or 6 years ago.

it does mark and stain really easily but if you are going for a ratter then does it really matter (rap not intended but accepted!)

if i had any areas that looked really mank i just rubbed it down and rattle canned it! no it didnt look amazing and no i didnt care. it scared children, chavs asked why i did it and my parents thought i'd lost the plot (it was a tidy van beforehand!) that was good enough for me

this part is on the rear nearside quater, above the weel arch, its approx 12" long

This is the dent / scratch on the passenger door, its about and 1cm but quite deep

Not sure if it shows at all the the crease in the bonnet,

the keyed front offside wing / drivers door the keying is approx 18"

and lastly not sure if it will show up, but the dent in the door (think someone had booted it or reversed into it?)

I know how you feel Dubsport. I had some van put a massive dent and long scratch in my drivers door just after buying the car (car was parked up and he obviously drove off). I have several other dents on the car, though smaller, and a few rust spots in places. I'm going for a full respray in the same green because I love it. I just don't see why you want matt black when you could have a much nicer colour and finish.

mainly because im a poor student lol just figured it would be cheaper than a complete respray in tornado red, plus i really like matt black cars :)

what do you guys suggest, get the bumpers colour coded, maybe buy a new drivers door and get the key marks blown out? (anyone know ruff prices for that?  :undecided:)

this is how she stands at the moment,

mate, just spray it matt black, take your time, rub it all down first like and pop all teh windows out and do a propper job.

then when its starts to look a bit shabby, either but some cans and touch it up, or go to local supermarket, but some chalk sticks and have some fun! love seeing cars with chalk writing all over, looks special!

whatever colour you paint it, the dents will still be there. save your money for the next car. even if you matt black it it'll take a f**k load of rattle cans or you'll have to borrow a compressor. for me, for that effort i'd wait and do it properly or wait for a new car.

I agree with joe... Take your time, good things come to those who wait  Hence why it's gonna take me so long to get mine sorted :)
