Same happened to one of mine, your upper spring plate has rusted away, gsf do them, you can replace both rear shocks, bump stops, top spring plates and top bushes for under a ton

Thought it was my upper spring plate that had gone. Will get it sorted tomorrow. I am right in saying, i can just change the plate?

I know someone who had the exact same thing happen on a cavalier about 6 years ago, both struts went straight through the top mount as they had corroded

i've got uprated springs, so that might not have helped.

I'm just changing the plate as in about two months i'm fitting coilovers.

@ Dolly, It'll be part no:7.
When I changed my shocks to Boge Turbos, I thought I'd clean and hamerite that part on mine before I put them back on. After wire brushing them I noticed that I could see loads of holes through the top of them, they were like a culenders (spelling?).

Anyways I got new off GSF, and I still put a few layers of Hamerite on.
