Title: A sudden Urge......
Post by: maxamus on 31 October 2007, 23:10
Was sat at home watching TV when i just got a sudden urge to take the GTI out for a little cruise. I have to say, ive had a few cars but i havent had one which makes me want to just take it out for a drive for no reason. Thats how pleasurable i find my GTI.

Took it for a cruise down the A166, was gentle on the paddle cruising along watching the night lit arcitecture, roads and sky go by. Was very humbling.

Pulled into a shell station which is beautifully lit which showed the GTI off really well (being black it does really shine in the night light). It was fairly busy and as soon as i pulled in i could see the other people gaze over in envy. As i was fueling up i could see people staring over. One fellow in a normal MK5 TDi was pointing it out to his child who must have been around 11 and i could see what he was thinking .

After i paid i got back in and drove off but as i was i went passed the MK5 TDi and gave the child a wink in acknowledgement.

Then i took it down the town cruising along and i could see that the GTI was catching the gaze of students going out a halloween special night.

As far as cars i've owned and drove, the GTI gets the most attention. I dont know if thats due to only a few GTI's in the area (esp in black 3dr) or if the car has that presence about it. My GTI is certainly a favourite with students and other MK5 Golf non-gti owners aswell as MK4 GTI/TDI women drivers.

I've had my car for nearly 6 months now but the novelty certainly has not wore off at all. I still find it special. Its going to be a sad day when i eventually get rid of it   (which will be no time soon. I still find it a joy to drive)

Anyone else feel the same....?

I get this all the time in my focus st but its more people turning round to see what the noise is(miltek with decat)but I also get looks when Im in my gt tdi they are a nice car to look at.  My focus is still one of them cars you just need to take out at any time of day OR night and I still get that hugh smile when I drive it  im having to get rid now so spending abit on the golf to make it look more special got to compromise somewhere

I must say that we get the same. When my mom pulls in at the hostel everyone stares at the car. We have had ours a year and people still stare at it and give a thunbs up etc.

....I've had mine for over 2 years and 40,000 miles and still feel the same joy, probably even increased as I've got more familiar with her

Yep I often find myself going out for made up journey's.... or speedy window shopping shopping as i like to call it!!

Often seem to get more appreciation from the older generation rather than younger bunch... I find this really strange as when i was a school kid and a nice Gti (or any nice car for that matter) drove past we as a group of kids would be jumping around and pointing. All young kids these days seem to be interested in is kak music and taking class A's... no appreciation for nice vehicle!!

No wonder the dad was education his little boy... something a few more parents should be doing!

Sorry i seem to have drifted off the point there slightly... :undecided:

Call it snobbery or call it what you like... You couldnt get me in a Datsun if you paid me!! Why would anyone want a Gt-R when you can get a 911 turbo or something more supercarish for the same money

And before you all shout.. because its cheaper!! I could spend 8k on a bike and be twice as fast or a Caterham if you not into 2 wheels.

I like Porsche, a lot, but every 5th car (seems like) here is a Porsche. There are so many second hand Porsches for sale, you won't believe. So, too common. But there are only 5 Skylines for sale, some of which cost more than a Porsche, despite being quite old.  Skyline is a legend in its own right. And new GT-R builds on this legend. And it is half the price of Porsche Turbo, so having the money for a Turbo you could buy 2 GT-Rs, for yourself and your GF maybe and have some fun! And it will be more exclusive.

there's one big downside of the cars like Skyline, Evo, Impreza, Supra... they are considered ricers. Porsche has undoubtedly indefinitely more class about itself. But that's ok. GT-R for me, please!

I like Supra, too.

Well, I'm totally happy with my Mk5 GTI and although I'd love a new BMW M3, I've had a sporty 2-door Beemer before and know they're not practical for my current lifestyle. The GTI Mk5 is such a great allrounder and has an iconic heritage stretching from 1976. It's a hard act to follow except that the Ed30 and R32 are equally great.

there is one reason - Porsche has clout. It has the BRAND NAME. "Porsche".. that sounds rich. "Nissan GT-R".. that sounds.. nothing. What is that?
If I had a choice now of buying GT-R or Porsche (4S or TURBO) I'd probably take Porsche. It's psychological.
But if you look logically, like a Vulcan, then GT-R goes faster around the ring than any porsche exceprt for GT (and you know how much GT costs).

I don't know what I would choose, and talk is cheap. I voted for white E30 with my money.
But logically GT-R is definitely something!!!

And another reason why Porsche is much more common here than Skyline or 350Z etc - Germany is next door.

I dont have any figures to back this up, but I doubt its faster than the 996/7 turbo (no mods). Also i think all you have to do is take a look inside.. (he white Gt-r link that was posted) in my opinion its just a glorified micra. I do give it to the Datsun for their technology and ability to build a very fast car... but certainly not a great one!

Porsche 997 Turbo: 7 minutes/40 seconds
Chevrolet Corvette Z06: 7 minutes/42 seconds
Porsche 996 GT2: 7 minutes/42 seconds

It may be just a Datsun, but it is no ordinary Datsun, R32UK.
(Take a look at what Clarkson had to say about skyline, and that guy is known for not mincing his words)

Thats better I like the new model.

Mind you I like my ED30 as its discrete, but has a good turn of speed when I need it.

Oh, and I can fit people in the back

The new GTR is a very nice looking car, i'd get that over a Porsche or M3 simply because it's more exclusive. I guess it'll be more exclusive because of the Nissan badge. In a way thats good, because if i bought a car that cost £60k, i'd like to see very few of them on the road. M3's will be so common, saw three in one lday last week. Must admit i loved the white one.
With the Porsche, theres so many Carrera's that the average person would be hard pressed to tell the difference.
Drive down a street or fuel station in a GTR, i'm sure there will be complementing looks, and this feeling will last longer because of the rarity. The only ppl who will look down on this are the badge snobs and those who hate 'Jap crap.'

Ok agreed that the new one is alot nicer than the old one!! But I still cant help thinking that its just not a car that people will look back on and say that its a classic or fantastic engineering. I drive past a place that does mods on 'jap crap' and everything parked outside (GT-R's included) has bits of it hanging off. Which I am sure are not aftermarket mods... they just look cheap and I would much rather subsitute quality for speed.

These cars are not as widespread in Europe as Porsches, but those in the know know what they are. Take honda NSX for example, it is a classic and a piece of fantastic engineering. Same for Skyline....
What we know of are cheap(er) Jap/Korean cars that they flood the market with. But the cars they sell in Japan we know little of. Same as electronics. Have you heard of a shaver with built in mp3 player?  :lipsrsealed:

I don't know if the new GT-R will be a legend. It will certainly be a piece of great engineering, it will certainly be very fast, and very exclusive. And cheaper than Porsche.

I guess i could be persuaded to praise the new one... but i still dont think i would feel safe ploughing my money into one. Although they do command respect I would still be inclined towards the porsche.. I think when you get down to such similar lap times there is literally no diffence on the road.

I myself am split.  :undecided: Good I have E30, which I liked from the first site and did not have to choose!
