Yep, once while driving and twice after id stopped and tried to restart it
id just fulled up at shell too
no flashing oil lights or anything strange just no spark
my mate from the main dealer is getting me relay 30 for 9am in the morn
hope that will sort it, got a busy w/end planned
drove fine all way home tho
-
Hi
can you describe how it cuts out.

Hi
can you describe how it cuts out.
only did it once whils moving, which was at about 30mph going accross a busy crossroads in leeds city centre, just basically saw the revs drop to zero as tho it had stalled..
then it decided it couldnt be arsed to start..it turned over but no spark, after 5 mins sat their trying it eventually started and was fine till i got to my next destination which was a place to book my car in for the Full stainless fitting, it then decided not to start again their too, after loads of trying and about half hour it fired up fine
got it back to work turned it off and tried it again, was the same didnt start, left it a hour then it was all normal
then when i finished work it didnt start but the second time i turned the key it was fine

If the relay doesn't do the trick i'd look into maybe the coil next

yep already thought that, its one or the other..
not sure how much coils go for??

Hi
When was the ignition switch last changed
-
Hi
When was the ignition switch last changed
as far as i know never, id be annoyed if it was that, iv had cars done more than twice the mileage of this one and be fine haha
-
coils about £35-45 depending on where you buy.... allthough i would say its unlikely the coil as it seems your saying giving it a few minutes and all is fine and with the coil it would be worse in damp wet weather more than anything alse
-
My ignition switch is knackered too. Luckily it's never effected the car, just doesn't switch off my stereo!
-
i hear u boneyb....kind of thinking that also, although when i went to get into the car to come home, it did the non start thing but then with the key turned straight away again, it started fine, if u understand me...
it drove home perfect tho
getting relay with the number 30 on it tomo as my mate at the VW main dealer says thats what it will be as it did the same on his 16v
mad how its done this 3 times today and never before hinted at any probs...
-

mine turns the stereo off unless i leave the lights on full beam, once the lights go onto sidelights if the stereo is still on it then switches off...
if the lights are off, once the ignitiojn goes off so does the stereo
-
Definately sounds like your ignition switch! About 20 odd quid and require part of the steering column drilling out and replacing with a bolt. I've heard they can be taken out without any fuss using a bent watchmakers screwdriver though lol
-
them ignition swicthes are a bstard to fit!! and i fitted a few when i was in the trade...fitted we charged £160 for a switch that cost us £6!! removing the steering coloum is fun as they have them snap bolts that need a chisel to remove!!
-
oh FFS
so are we saying ignition switch....

I had a similar problem with my Mk3 and it was the Crankcraft sense. Just a thought !!!!!!! Probably better to try and coil, relay etc first. The Crankshaft Sensor can be purchased from Ebay for around £45 as they are 150 + from the dealers. I did see someone selling one on a forum recently but im struggling to remember where it was.

Free Plug!!, Free Plug!! (http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=69187.0)

^^^^^^is that the ht lead that goes into the coil, and if it is, is the sensor in the connector then??
-
ive had the same problem with my 16v GTi for the last couple of months, i bought the car knowing it had a running fault. the previous owner put on new plugs, leads, dizzy, rotor arm, coil, battery which didnt cure the problem and so far i have cleaned the throttle body, changed the crankshaft sensor, changed relay 167 and 30 and today im going to renew vacuum hosing for the ecu or something!!
good luck with youre car, hope its not a complete c**t to fix like mine is :)
-
cheers bunter, just getting ready for the trip to the dealers for the relay no 30....
the car has been super sweet as long as iv owned it till yesterday...i just hope its a easy fix!!
-
ive been out messing with mine this morning and found theres no fuel coming through, plugs are bone dry after trying to start it for 60 seconds. maybe im getting somewhere now.
good luck with the relay, i changed both the ecu and fuel pump ones on mine and didnt cure it, maybe youl be luckier :)
-
car was fine today, allw ay to dealer and back, but got yhr new relay anyway, this one is a white one and the old one is black, changed it so it has the new relay in it and guess what.....
CAR WILL NOT f**kING START NOW...........
got it to start if i revved the bollocks off it then but once i switched it off and restarted it i wouldnt, you can hear a noise coming from the induction kit,
downloaded vag.com. just need to get a lead asap..
pissed off as i need the car today really badly, my old 250k mile escort runner was reliable as hell...dont expect this from a VW..
as you can see...im not too happy

No, the crank sensor relays information from the flywheel to the ECU
-
changed the fuel pump relay also just now..
No change still wont start
oil light now flashes also
getting pissed off... for a split second their i was thinking of breaking the car and selling all the parts and going back to a jap car as i really cant be arsed with a unreliable VW, which it seems these mk3's are unfortunatly..
gonna get the vag.com lead and hook that up see what it says and take it from their
-
RIGHT
i have discovered something
if i turn the ignition and hold it in the on position as far fas i can, the engine will run!!!!! but at 1000rpm rather than idle at around the 900 mark
their is a noise coming from the front engine mount are which is like a hissing grinding noise
Is this the crank sensor??

Hi
Where you insert the ignition key, the shroud plastic is normally in two halves. Take the bottom one off and put up a picture of what you see. Make sure the picture shows the bottom of where the ignition key goes in. I will trhen try to help you.

thats my thoughts exactly, im going to fix mine and sell it as i have no confidence in the car. i thought coming from a couple of decent mk2`s to a decent mk3 was a natural progression but it certainly hasnt turned out that way, even the mk4`s seem to have the same problems. im getting rid of mine and either going back to a pulsar gti-r or a bmw 328i sport, at least the have a modicum of reliability.

daft thing is, mine was intermittant and was runnig fine with not a hitch to the dealers and back untill i put in the new relay in just to be sure and now it wont start at all, even with the old relay
really annoying as it was supposed to be getting its stainless steel fitted tomo...
got the vag.com lead on its way ...!!!
-
mine was running fine for a couple of months and was great to drive, then out of the blue it started to cut out and restart then finally it completely died and will not start even now. as far as im concerned golfs stopped being reliable after the mk2, i never had any problems like this with my mk2`s, they just needed the usual running parts like tyres etc. have completely lost faith in all the new vdubs and will NEVER buy another one newer than 1991.
tbh vag.com wasnt much help to me, it showed the crank sensor fault which i fixed but nothing more, yet the car still wont go.
lol my advice would be to keep yer stainless money and put it towards a car that will be reliable ;) :P

************************MAJOR UPDDATE ***********************
CAR PROBLEM NOW SOLVED!!!!!
Ignition switch fault, iv had the cowling off and once i fiddled with the wires it fired up, some idiot has butcherd the wires at some point too using them scotch tabs!!! Never use them as they are BAD.
iv put a tie wrap to hold it all tight and its runnig fine, i just need to get a new ignition switch from main dealer, my next door neighbour is a technician at VW leeds (he been away last week and just got back) and said this problem would have nothing to do with Hall sensor, crank sensor, coil or starter etc and said the relay thing had nnothing to do with it either and to check ignition switch as this is a common problem on all VW, and Audi etc....even ones which are almost new...
He was right by the looks of it and i advise anyone with similar probs to check this out also
ill keep reporting back how it goes..
-
ooooh! was the car turning over when you tried to start or just nothing? just wondering if it could be the problem with mine!

car was turning over just not catching if you get me...i got it to run off the starter motor by holding the ignition key on fully..but i dont reccomend doing this alot as it will f**k the starter eventually, i just noticed it did that..
but now its working perfect, i feel bloody pretty good right now and a bit of confidence in the old dear is coming back :)
check it out Bunter
