It's not supposed to be like this, it's a Golf for gods sake. VW built their brand on quality built cars not this sh!t.
And they charge for it to.
My car is a month old and both doors rattle all of the time so does the dashboard from deep, deep within and there are other random rattles depending on the road surface. Even the bloody engine rattles.
VW have the nerve to show that advert with the muppet and his partner with the creaky earring as if it is inconcievable that the car could have a rattle.
The only thing that doesn't rattle in my car is my wifes bloody earrings.
-
ok....Breath......slowly...

-
My door seals creak when I go round a corner and there are sometimes numerous rattles depending on surface and if theres a full moon. I'm dissapointed but I'm used to it after haveing a BMW that sounded like a bag of nails.
-
The speaker on the drivers door rattles all the time - there is also a rattle under the steering column dependent on road surface. Both of these items have been looked at by the dealer - the door was tempoaraly fixed - the couling was broken and replaced but still the rattle. Now the sunroof rattles when tilted. I agree if i were to expect rattles i could have saved 4k and gone for a Renualt. Its a pain in the ar#e!!!!!
-
Yep my R32 rattles and creaks. Its a massive problem throughout the MK5 Golf range. My GT TDI was the same. Only reason I can put up with it is I have the radio on all the time or windows down listening to the V6
But I agree, for VW standards its not on especially in the flagship GTI/ED30/R32 models.

mine dosnt rattle  25,000 miles and not one creek

You are one of the lucky ones then :undecided:
-
yeah i have a similar thing but they all do it
i have some mk5 bog standard vw at work, i might ask the drivers if they have the same problem
i haven't heard anything
i think the gti and above are made slightly differently, parts etc for braking etc but i agree
sometimes it feels like i'm going to turn into fred flintstone and start running with the car around my waist
however, when i put me foot down, all is forgotten............
-
I could have bought a good, brand new hot hatch for $20,000 less than this Golf and suffered less rattles too!
This is my 5th new car in as many years and none have rattled like this and no other manufacturer has claimed such a "rattle free" experience in their advertising either.
I keep reading that there are big rattle issues with MK5's and then I read threads where people take them in to their dealer to get fixed and they either lose their car for days at a time or they get it back damaged/thrashed or no better than when it went in!!!
What would you do?
-
why the hell dont you take it back and get it lookd at, it under warenty isnt it!! just go in and kick up a fuss!! :lipsrsealed:
-
I have noticed a very strange halloween type creeeeeek when i reverse out of my drive.. not rattles though thankfully!! But apart from that its hard to hear much over the lovelly noise of the v6.... (sorry had to get that in)
-
yea nice sounding v6 r32, shame i beat one in my poxy 2.0 turbo    :lipsrsealed:
-
Mk4, 2001, 70,000K and not a single rattle.
Unlucky.

Yeah so we keep hearing joegti!! Why not bring it up to sunny yorkshire and put it up against a decent driver.. Bring ur earmuffs too, wouldnt want u to fall under the sweet v6 spell and have to trade your Gti
-
i think somebodys getting a bit emotional hahah dont
-
any ways finished work now so im off,
-
have to say rattle free here in mine, the ed30 i test drove had a few rattles i noticed, but i must have a monday morning build and not a friday afternoon effort
-
My previous Mkv GTI didn't have any rattles, 'only' wind noise from the top of both front windows  The ED30 I must admit has a few rattles, the roads around town are bloodly awful, when on a decent road I don't hear a thing, though It could have something to do with the Hi-Fi being on a bit louder :smug:
-
Only rattle I had was from the infamous top grille on the dash
Sorted myself with some velcro :nerd:
-
Mk4, 2001, 70,000K and not a single rattle.
Unlucky.
My MKII GTI was just like the VW advert at the time, solid not a rattle. ( Remember the couple going out. There is a squek in the cabin. Turns out to be the wifes earring..... Sorted by two squirts of oil )
It was 12 years old when she went,............ will have to dig out a photo.

There is a quick process required to fix this common issue with all cars, big and small!
Step 1: Switch on engine
Step 2: Blare the fcukin radio
Problem solved

I'd love my dealer to sort it but I keep reading awful reports of cars missing for days at a time only to be returned just as rattly, endless return trips for unresolved rattles, damaged cars, thrashed cars and workshop oiks prizing dashboards apart with screwdrivers.
My dealer damaged my car before I even picked it up from new and the pre delivery preparation was absolutely sh1ite.
The thought of one of the workshop 'bods' pulling my new car apart sends shivers down my spine.

Thanks Cass, appreciated.
As for rattles being inevitable, how so?
I've just sold a flimsy 6 year old Clio172 that never had any rattles and the last 5 brand new cars (not one of them a VW) I've owned had nothing like these build quality issues.
-
Sorry to hear about issues Speedynz - have had no rattles at all in my NZ new GTI so far.....touch wood....
-
Well - wrote a e-mail of complaint stating i wanted the rattles permanantly fixed- quickly got a call from the dealer - booked in for two days - thats what they say they need to ensure the job - free courtesy car - sorted IMO. Thats the benefit of a car with a warranty. If it rattles again - same process will occur again - and they pick up / deliver too.
Sometimes mass produced cars need a small amount of farting about to get right. Bloody better be - i've made that quite clear!

Trading in my 6 year old Clio 172 (90k on the clock) for my new Gti tomorrow   . I only hope the build quality is a little better, although not holding my breath considering what a lot of you guys are saying.
Last 2 cars I've had have been French (yeah... ha ha), 106 GTi and the Clio 172.... both rattled like a bag of bolts... but both always started first time, every time and never had any serious problems.
Am going for a german car now cos I want something that hopefully is better built and I can actually listen to the b**ody radio without turning the volume to max. (something that's important when you're getting on a bit!!) :embarassed:

Hi Matt, fine choice of cars, some real enthusiast stuff there. My 172 which I also just traded for a GTI had zero rattles.
The GTI is a far more mature car and a really lovely thing but boy it rattles.
I wish you well.

Every car I've ever had rattled to some extent (and I've had a few). Worst offender was a new Peugeot 205 GTI 1.9 in 1986. Horrendous build quality
More recently, an Audi TT (2000) and Porsche Boxster (2000) - overall these weren't that bad though.
The GTi has proved rattle free for 12 months but now a couple have arrived in the past week - sunroof rotary control, dash centre air vent (both well known and easy fixes) and an upper drivers door rattle. Will fix these myself
My tyre pressures were too high following a service 2 weeks ago - ride was too harsh. Now adjusted, much better and ride is smoother and not so harsh on the car. Road surfaces today are pretty sh1te and this also impacts upon the cars ability to remain rattle free

Mk2 Golf 1988 174000 miles, no rattles. 91 Polo mk3 91k no rattles. Don't build em like they used to do they :) in fact I don't think any Dub I've been in rattled or squeaked except the 2 mk5's I test drove. Piss poor really for a 20k+ car.

Bornfree, I've got a feeling that Edition 30's may well be a lot worse. The lowered suspension has a significant effect on the ride quality and structural integrity, they are way bumpier than a standard GTI and in conjunction with high reccommended tyre pressures (37psi) and stiff sidewall tyres (brand dependent, Continental are worst, you could have one of any four brands on your new ED 30) it really tests that all the nuts and bolts have been tightened!
I wouldn't be suprised to see a poll of rattles showing that the Edition 30 rattles much more that any other model.
I've owned a MK2 and MK3 and whilst the '3' was a dullard it was incredibly well built. I've never driven a standard MK5 with rattles either.
-
You may be right there about the standard GTi's not rattling as much, i cant recall anyone (except the top dash board rattle and speaker door card rattles) complaining anything as much. Iwas under the impression that both suspention set-ups are identical on both models :undecided:

Edition 30 is lowered 15mm but it feels like 50!

Must agree that the suspension of French cars such as Citroen and Peugeot is generally good. Nissan have always aspired to build a good car after the Datsun nightmare era. Performance cars have an adverse effect on ride quality and cost cutting these days in search of profit is always bad news :undecided:
