if anyone else has a GTI that sounds a bit like a diesel on tickover (not the injector tick..more a knock at top left corner)...did they take it to the dealer..and if so what did they say ?
-
Yep, same sound, I think they're just a little crude at cold start up.
Didn't go to the dealer, asked on here and others said that there's were similar.
Did you go to the dealer?
Did they say "they all do that"?
-
Sadly - this is normal
Cass
-
although one guy on here got his engine replaced by VW under warranty because it was excessive.
-
I distinctly remember my last Ed30 being very smooth and soft sounding - initially - but this one sounds a bit like a tractor :undecided: At least I can give it some welly and pretend I'm in an R32
-
Mine sounds perfect
No diesel clatter on start up or anything :undecided:
I'm confused now!
Can anyone post sounds of their clattery car?
-
I went to the cash machine tonight, left the engine running and the car really did sound 'pathetic' I'm just talking about the tickover, it's not what you expect from this sort of car IMO.

My Ed30 is the same, I havent taken it to the dealer because I am anticipating the same battles I had with my last car, MINI Cooper S. That was exactly the same and the dealear insisted it was normal and to be fair the MINI forums were full of people saying the same, in fact nobodys was perfect at tick over. I did eventually solve it, when I had it remapped, I got the tuner to raise the idle revs by 100 or so and it sounded like a new engine  He reckoned all the manufacturers were dropping the idle revs too low on their cars (he did give a reason but I dont remember) and he was raising them all the time to counter engines sounding like a pile of crap.
-
yea, it sounds even worse when you turn off the climate control..which makes the tick-over revs drop a little....I miss the sound of my scooby a bit

funny you should say that. about the idle... the other day i left aircon on, didnt realise it was on, and when stopped i thought, ooh the engine sounds better now (must be running in) it sounded more burble'ish and more like it should.... then i realise a/c was on, turned if off, revs dropped down abit at idle (didnt realise they were higher till they dropped) and it sounded dieselish again... sinse day one i have thought the engine sounds very metal and like a 1.2 or something... espesh from the outside, the engine just dosnt sound like it should... very interesting raising the idle revs tho, but its just gonna use more fuel!

You mean you can actually turn the DZCC off
That's it! mine is always on (and I mean from day 1!), so I guess I will not here the diesel noise. Best keep it on then

You've obviously been sold a lemon
You should go to VW and complain about why your Ed30 doesn't sound like a tractor...

Ours sounds like a diesel. I can go as far as saying our Mitsubishi Pajero sounds more er....sensual then the GTI

Maybe the EU forces manufacturers to make their petrol engines sound more rougher than a London council estate - in the hope that everyone will buy a diesel ;)

Quite possibly the single reason they drop them so low!
-
yeah, but then the car shouldnt run at 1k just for sound, it should sound good at 800 or whatever it is.
-
As my friend walked to my car for his first time...never taken him for a spin before he said..."i hate cars that are diesels...how can you buy one" i was like whaaaaa  theres no way in hell he just said that!! Some people now days should really pick up a car magazine once in a while....
-
now thats a sad story!

Agreed, Id like to bet it will purr like a pussycat at 100 or so higher though!
-
when i start my gti up it idles at around 800rpm and i must syat mine is loud to. Loud as my friends diesel

try teasing it up to 1000 rpm, I bet it sounds perfect.
-
or just put air con on, that makes it idle higher... but hay, i dont wanna drive with ac on!
-
I must admit I am confused by all this, my last car was a GT TDI (diesel obviously!) and my ED30 sounds nothing, and I mean absolutely nothing like it (cold start or running).
It has a nice low burble from the exhaust and has done since delivery, I even thought how nice it sounded when the delivery guy started it up to take it off the transporter. Don't know if I have a good 'un and you all have duds :smug:
-
well that is strange... mayb its from inside i hear it then... may have to try outside next start.... the engine just soudns so clunky!! inside or out! not as it should imo!

Quite, mine burbles from the back but sounds like a sewing machine up front!

Mine is like that - its a Singer Deluxe model up front and a nice sound at the back...
-
Yeah, mine sounds a bit like a diesel! Got some idiot in an 88' civic with a DIY sprayjob come over to me yesterday looked at the car and said "is dat a diesel" what does he think? I got a diesel, put gti bumpers, alloys and interior on it! Fcukin idiot!

boy oh boy, i guess he was irish!! opps ,just realised your from ireland!!

not got mine yet , will let you all know. Kinda hope its gonna be quiet
It certainly seems common on various gti forums.
Dont suppose theres any correlation between noise and service style (i.e oil type)?
