sounds like a diesel
« on: 05 October 2007, 20:29 »
if anyone else has a GTI that sounds a bit like a diesel on tickover (not the injector tick..more a knock at top left corner)...did they take it to the dealer..and if so what did they say ?

Yep, same sound, I think they're just a little crude at cold start up.

Didn't go to the dealer, asked on here and others said that there's were similar.

Did you go to the dealer?

Did they say "they all do that"?

I distinctly remember my last Ed30 being very smooth and soft sounding - initially - but this one sounds a bit like a tractor  :undecided:  At least I can give it some welly and pretend I'm in an R32

Mine sounds perfect

No diesel clatter on start up or anything :undecided:

I'm confused now!

Can anyone post sounds of their clattery car?

I went to the cash machine tonight, left the engine running and the car really did sound 'pathetic'   I'm just talking about the tickover, it's not what you expect from this sort of car IMO.

My Ed30 is the same, I havent taken it to the dealer because I am anticipating the same battles I had with my last car, MINI Cooper S. That was exactly the same and the dealear insisted it was normal and to be fair the MINI forums were full of people saying the same, in fact nobodys was perfect at tick over. I did eventually solve it, when I had it remapped, I got the tuner to raise the idle revs by 100 or so and it sounded like a new engine  He reckoned all the manufacturers were dropping the idle revs too low on their cars (he did give a reason but I dont remember) and he was raising them all the time to counter engines sounding like a pile of crap.

yea, it sounds even worse when you turn off the climate control..which makes the tick-over revs drop a little....I miss the sound of my scooby a bit

funny you should say that. about the idle... the other day i left aircon on, didnt realise it was on, and when stopped i thought, ooh the engine sounds better now (must be running in) it sounded more burble'ish and more like it should.... then i realise a/c was on, turned if off, revs dropped down abit at idle (didnt realise they were higher till they dropped) and it sounded dieselish again... sinse day one i have thought the engine sounds very metal and like a 1.2 or something... espesh from the outside, the engine just dosnt sound like it should... very interesting raising the idle revs tho, but its just gonna use more fuel!
