Title: diverter valve?? any good or chav??
Post by: joesgti on 20 September 2007, 14:50
hi,
just wondering if anybody has used a diverter valve on their gti?? does it sound good? also does it damage the turbo? (i remember reading somthing somewhere about this)

are their any benerfits/advantages other than sound??

or does it sound chav and an absolute waste of money?

From what I can remember, the Forge Diverter Valve is significantly better than the standard valve fitted to the TFSI engine but I do not believe that it makes any specific noise as it does not dump to atmosphere, one of the more technical types such as TT or Red Robin would be best placed to answer or possibily try searching 'forge' or 'diverter valve' on this forum.

I've already answered this in detail in another thread. I've even posted links [or did I do all this on Tyresmoke?].

It's a spacer which makes the whooshy noises and not the DV. The Forge DV will not damage anything - Quite the contrary, it will better protect the turbo by not failing like the stock DV is known to do. VW have relocated the stock DV to the front to help the problem but apparently there are still stock DV failures - It's a known weak link.

It's primarily a precautionary measure, especially on a remapped car, but it does hold boost longer (by a very small amount).

The Forge DV has been very thoroughly tested and there is also a version for the Ed30.

Dump valve mega chav!
diverter valve is the business.
with a div/valve full power is avail almost instantly, as opposed to the dump which has pumped it into the atmosphere and has to build it up again( taken from this months VW driver)
I had one of these (007P) fitted to my last MK4 Gti as i was running a remap, noticed a slight diff but not much.

If you can hear the dump valve it is mega chav!  Only tend to hear them on crappy old Subaru Imprezas and Nissan Sunny's . Naff!!

....No, you don't hear it to anything like the level of sound a 'spacer' delivers.

I have the spacer from forge for my ed30. Its only slightly louder, nowhere near as loud as evos, scoob or GTR's. Only time it is loud is in closed spaces like car parks etc. Also it seems louder when i run in mapped mode.
I can understand why ppl here will say its chavvy since a Golf is meant to be a sensible mans car. But sinc i can't afford a GTR, i'm happy making my car sound abit more aggressive, cos lets face it the 2.0T engine is quite dull sounding inside the car
(Puts on my flame suit)

....Which is why I originally got a Milltek Cat-back exhaust and then after learning more about performance I got a Turbo-back (Hi-flow+Downpipe).

I've been in a Skoda VRS (same engine) with spacer and it's the kind of whooshy noise which turns heads in the street. Also, rather irritating after a time. But each to their own.

The Cat back does help abit aurally but the engine front still sounds dull in my opinion. I don't find the spacer irratating, maybe because i've got a chav inside me trying to break out

I've got the Non-Resonated Turbo-back Milltek (the loudest of what is NOT a noisy system) but loud enough when the engine is working. Perhaps some of the normal DV sound (I don't have a spacer) is drowned.

I thought that the diverter valve was only the weak link if you didn't have the type C version :undecided:

Type C version is "allegedly" fixed to the ED30, Leon Cupra and S3 :undecided:

....I personally know of one person who has had a C fail on a GTI (remapped) and have heard that from someone who until recently worked at Forge (still on good terms with them) who knows of several failures on the Ed30/S3 front location. The VAG design has an inherent weakness and their same DV is being used but in the new frontal location. They seem to have thought that failures were encouraged by heat (near the turbo) but obviously it's not. Diaphrams split.

Thanks for that RR

Looks like I may be visiting for a DV when I remap then

....Unfortunately it's not a mod which you see much benefit from except peace of mind and a wee bit more of boost being held . It's a superbly engineered bit of kit though - Worthy of being a coffee table ornament!

I've been misinforming you all! According to Mike at Forge:

"The only reason for the placement change was because the turbo that was chosen to be used on the S3 (K04) doesn't have a mounting provision for the valve built into the compressor cover of the turbo like the K03 on the normal FSI applications, so it needed to be moved elsewhere.

It wasn't relocated for any supposed functional "benefit" over the turbocharger mounted location. Not for a temperature change, and not because it works "better" in that location either.

It was just a suitable place to mount it not having a turbocharger mounting flange available on the turbo."

I had thought it was for temperature reasons re a rubber diaphram on the OEM DV.

Ok. I'm just about to order a new diverter valve from Forge. How do I know if mine is remotely mounted or not and which one do I need. I'm confused by the whole diverter or dump valve thing. I thought they were two different things. My car is a 55 plate

Is it this one, remote

Or this one straight on to the turbo

....As a 55 plate, I assume it's a Mk5 GTI and not a GTI Edition 30. In which case it's this second one: http://www.forgemotorsport.co.uk/content.asp?inc=product&cat=1703DV&product=FMFSITV

If you phone Forge 01452 380999 or Awesome 0161 776 0777, they're very helpful.
