Does anyone know if the VW 504 longlife oil is always the VW 'factory fill' on a new GTI?
Is it always Castrol Edge?
The engine is using a little oil as I'm running it in and I don't want to cross contaminate it with different spec dealer oil when I top up.
Thankyou.

Yes 504 is standard fill on a new GTI.
Have you read TT's oil guide yet?

Thankyou Hurdy and TT.

I've heard that factory fill can be either Castrol or Fuchs, dependent on who has tendered for the cheapest price. Either way, all engines are factory filled with the latest 504.00/507.00 LongLife 3 spec.

Got a litre of Mobil 1 with my car when new. Due a service on 24/09 and will be expecting the same. Might even provide the oil myself to save a few £'s

If it is Mobil 1 ESP - then you are OK, if it is not ESP, then sling it in the bin, or use it in your lawnmower, because dispite the claims on the bottle, the standard Mobil 1 is NOT VW approved.

So what would you use if you needed to top up??
And is cross contamination an issue as is could be one of two brands??

Just checked TT - it is Mobil 1 5W-30 ESP formula

Had to top up the oil once during the first 1000k or so but not a drop since - done about 6k so far.

Is this also the oil i should be using for the R32?? The dealer told me to keep an eye on the oil over the first few hundred miles, and to top it up where necessary. The sticker on the inside of the driver door has a castrol sticker on it... but im at a loss as to which oil i should use to top up, and avoid cross contamination as I have read about above.
Thx

Dealer should have given you a litre bottle for top-up purposes. If you are unsure, I would call the dealer for clarification.

Thanks cass!! I will be doing that.
Strange actually because when my brother got his VW I remember the dealer giving him some and telling him to top up and keep checking it!

Hmm, I would still avoid that oil. Afterall, Mobil claim both BMW and VW LongLife approvals, and the two standards are quite different. Mobil also claim a few more "lies" in that web page:
Also recommended for use in applications requiring
BMW Longlife 01 and 01 FE
Volkswagen (Gasoline) 502 00 / 503 00 / 503 01
Volkswagen (Diesel) 505 00 / 506 00
Volkswagen (Diesel "Unit-Injector/Pumpe-Düse" - exceptions pls see below) 505 01^ / 506 01^
^ except "Unit-Injector/Pumpe-Düse" R5/V10-TDi (VW 506 01) and 3/4-cylinder Diesel engines without Longlife-Service/without Diesel-Particulate-Filter (VW 505 01)
Looks like they are upto their old tricks again.

Only if you are on LongLife servicing, are they supposed to supply the top-up.

That is not good advice. Every single stealer (VW and Audi) in the UK (and France) has repeatedly tried to supply me with the wrong spec oil. I have regualar arguments with one stealer, who (a) does not understand the 3 different VW LongLife oil specs, (b) is unable to understand the difference between LongLife oil and LongLife servicing, (c) generally doesn't give a flying fcuk about the implications of using the wrong oil, and (d) admits to "occasional" engine failures due "incorrect lubrication".
The only definative way, is to read the owners handbook (and NOT the service book), take a note of the oil specs, and then look on the VW web site for their own authoritative list of appropriate VW approved oils.
The brands of oils I would personally recommend would be Castrol (or any from the same group, which include BP and Aral), Fuchs, Total, Motul. I would use Shell if you pushed me, and would rather have a wisdom tooth extracted than use Mobil.
