Title: Oettinger rabbit
Post by: hail-hail on 14 July 2007, 09:02
Hi there, new to the forum and about to pick up my first gti, it's a Mark 2 16v, I know, wrong forum.

However, it got me thinking back to a car my uncle used to own, must be 20 years ago.
It was a Mk1 Rabbit tuned by Oettinger. It was a left hooker and imported from Germany.
I am try to find one of these and really don't know where to start, I don't even know if this was a factory tuned production car that was released or a standard gti with plenty of after market tuning done. It was very quick and had teeth juddering suspension.

Any ideas what this could be? He still has the steering wheel :D and I would like to try and stick the rest of the car onto it if possible :D

I think you'd have more chance of finding hens teeth stuck in the middle of rocking horse poo.

I'm trying to think of where I saw a pic of an Oettinger engine bay in a mk1 recently. But don't get too excited as I think it was on a website and not for sale.

Welcome to the forum by the way.

Nothing on the Oettinger website about the Mk1, but there's a pic of the Mk2 they did: http://www.oettinger.com.au/oau_vwgolf2.html (http://www.oettinger.com.au/oau_vwgolf2.html)

From another site I found this excerpt:
"OETTINGER, the Audi and VW specialist from Friedrichsdorf, who participated in the success of the original GTI in 1976 with the worldwide first 16V engine"

Finally found more:
http://www.faltdach.net/vwgolfmk116s.htm (http://www.faltdach.net/vwgolfmk116s.htm)

Looks pretty special, someone asked about them ages ago, but anyway.

If you could find one, that'd be an awesome car, but only 1250 were made.
The steering wheel doesn't look that special, but has the "16s" badge on it to say that it is.

Specs:
Engine: 1,6l 16 valve twin cam engine, 136Bhp at 6500Rpm, 157Nm at 5500Rpm, 5-speed gearbox, maximum Rpm 7500.

The 16s was a mk1 that was only available in France I believe.

From that site I gathered that it was VW France who wanted a more powerful Mk1, so VW gave it to Oetteinger who created it, but it eventually ended up being called the 16s in France.
But maybe I mis-read it.

^ That just about sums it up I think. Although I never realised that Oettinger actually tuned the engine. You learn something new every day.

Thanks for all the info guys, could have been the 16s but it had square lights at the front, so I am thinking maybe not. I will find out some more details and post again. I will also try and get a pic of the steering wheel, see if that helps.

You could get square lights for mk1s though so it is possible that your uncle had after market lights on them. I think someone like Reiger did them along with their bodykits.

Ok, decided that the best person to ask was my uncle, turns out he has some good info on the car.
Car was first owned by my uncle, then went to another uncle (where all this info has come from) and then onto my cousin, who ended up scrapping it

Firstly some pics :

It was a good shout on the Reiger kit, that's exactly what it is:

From Reiger:

It started life as a 1979 Rabbit Gti and was taken away by Oettinger to prototype his Golf upgrades. Mr Oettinger first did his prototype bits on the Golf and Passat in 1979 (i.e. this golf) He had previously been doing Beetles and camper vans.
I know it is an 81 year reg plate, but original German docs said it was a 79.

Car came back from Oettinger as a 2 litre block, with full Bilstein height adjustable suspension along with strengthened struts and bracing, anti surge sump (which my cousin still has apparently along with some other bits, I have yet to speak to him) and a few other goodies.

The car was first used by Mr VW's son and then brought over to the UK where my uncle got his hands on it.

That's all the info I have managed to get so far :D

I kinda like that mk1 and the details on the Oettinger rabbit I've seen before via vwvortex forum, but not the website covering it, so again you learn something new each day on mk1's build out there many years ago.

Sounds like your uncle had a first of its kind to me. Shame it's not still about. I don't think it's a 16S having read your previous post about it's history.

No, you can actually see the steering wheel in the 3rd pic on my earlier post. The center badge has Oettinger and an icon of some description. The pic is an old one. I'll get a brand new pic posted up soon as my uncle still has the steering wheel gathering dust in his garage. I would guess that is is likely a one off and a whole lot rarer that that one on ebay (potentially worth a lot more than the £110 wining bid on that one  )

I will send this thread to him and see if he can post some pics up and answer some question without going through me.

Hi all, new to the forum and thought I'd say hello and that I have an oettinger mk1 gti 16s! Bought it about 2 months ago, needs a little work to bring back to good health though! Still in very good condition for age though.
Regards kevin.

you don't want a 16s

anything goes wrong with it and you have to make the parts not a fun game.
had an engine and box out of one sitting about a few years ago,   bottom end is nothing spectial except for the pistons the cyl head is a oettinger spectial   you chould at one point buy an upgrade kit to fit it to a gti... it was lots of money
