Like Dinx said, why go to the trouble of a new filter without putting new oil in?

There will be a fair bit, not just a couple of drips. Get ready to catch it with a bucket!

if the car has been standing with the engine off for a few hours YOU CAN remove the filter and providing you have a steady hand you will spill NOTHING!!!

COME ON PEEPs, THE OIL SITS IN THE BOTTOM OF THE ENGINE WHEN NOT RUNNING!!!

Now i know what i'm talking about as i'm a mechanic for a living.

But as they all say why not just change it anyway

COME ON PEEPs, THE OIL SITS IN THE BOTTOM OF THE ENGINE WHEN NOT RUNNING!!!

Not with a genuine VW style filter, they have a non-return valve in which keeps a bit of oil in the line between the filter & head, helps keep the tappets quitet :)

The way I do it is to hang a plastic bag around the filter once I've loosened it off, then I just let the filter drop into the bag and leave it for 5 minutes.
