Title: New Car for a New Member
Post by: NORTHERNER on 16 June 2007, 13:20
Anyone got 19 inch BBS alloys (larger version of the ED30 set)?  Just wondered how it affected ride quality when left on the standard springs?  Ideally wouldn't have them, but a car I am looking at next week has them fitted...
Cheers

As far as I remember, there is one guy here whose father has 19 BBS fitted on his Ed.30

Guilty!

Got your message Northerner, but managed to delete it, and then couldn't find the private messaging function on here...is there one?  :undecided:

To be fair, I've only been in the car a few times, but I find the ride perfectly acceptable - hardly any harsher than standard I reckon. Mind you, I'm used to cars with stiff suspension/big wheels, so it depends on your tolerance levels I suppose!

Okay, I'm not really giving a definitive answer here, so let's have a go - in my opinion, the ride quality is NOT compromised with 19's. That any good?

Cheers James   I will be giving it a go today after driving one with normal 17inch alloys... should give me a good comparison!
As an aisde, if I go for the one with 17's - anyone know a good and cheap source for the original 18's??  I just prefer the look of them... fill the arches a bit better...

Well, I test drove two GTi's today, one with standard 17inch Monza, and one with the 19 BBS CK Alloys... the ride is more firm with the 19's but not overly compromised in terms of day to day driving, I found it perfectly acceptable, this was over A road, some stop start in town with speed bumps... so a fair reflection of day to day living with the car.

actually, after driving both I put a deposit down on the one with 19's

Cheers matey, out of the three golfs I viewed in the 14k-16k price range it was the best one..
only issue I have with it is some wear on the leather of the drivers side seat side-bolsters - need to start treating the leather to make it more supple and a bit harder wearing i think.

Wheels (and whole car) look sweet, try gliptone liquid leather conditioner for that lovely leather smell !

Can yous use the liquid leather on the steering wheel and other leather parts?  This car was previously owned by a civil engineer and sometimes he goe into the car when covered in grime... also, can you get a leather dye to touch up the areas where the leather starts to wear?  The drivers side, side bolster is a bit worn and I figured I could add the colour back where required and then just make sure I clean and condition the leather every three weeks to keep it tip-top going forward...

Gliptone leather cleaner to lift the grime, they also do colour match dye for areas that are marked. Conditioner afterwards and all should be sweet. I've used this product for a fair few years and it has always performed, buy it from ebay or direct from gliptone if you need colour match dye. This is only my views and I am sure there are equally good products out there,

Sorry, don't know colour code but costs are G12 cleaner £6.00 (250ml) and G11 conditioner (250ml) from
manufacturer/supplier (Liquid Leather) on 01706 819365. They will also be able to help with the colour match/dye, products correct name is 'scuff master' and is a small bottle of colour matched liquid. That is about all info I can remember at the moment,

Looks great! The wheels really suit it! I'm jealous  Will look the business when you get them side skirts coded!
Title: Re: New Car for a New Member
Post by: NORTHERNER on 26 June 2007, 16:07
Cheers Russ - yep skirts and front respray should make it look even sweeter
The wheels are growing on me now, although I still worry whether the car is bordering on chav, especially when coupled with the tinted fronts and rears... I bought the Golf as it is a "grown up" hot hatch... thats why I was tempted to go back to the original Monza 18's... will wait and see how I feel in a couple of weeks.
Title: Re: New Car for a New Member
Post by: Russ.C on 26 June 2007, 16:53
I don't think its in danger of looking 'chav', to be fair once you have had the skirts etc. sprayed it will basically look like an Ed30 with bigger pescaras!  I think the GTI looks very subtle anyway compared with cars like the CTR for example, thats why I like it, understated.. (nice horse arena by the way, my old dear has one just like it!)

Good point Russ... the alloys are just basically bigger pescara's I think...

As for the horse run, not mine... a neighbours... he also has a couple of goats which delight in jumping over the fences and climbing over anything... don't worry, if they touch my car they will be going to goat heaven pretty sharpish!

The car looks great - makes me want one more!
Title: Re: New Car for a New Member
Post by: NORTHERNER on 27 June 2007, 23:29
Cheers Emeye.... just spent tonight cleaning the leather and then treating with some Liquid Leather... should look great now... next step is some new GTi footmats, spray side skirts and chin spolier, then some washing, claying and waxing to finish off... then a couple of warranty claims (drivers side xenon spray system seems to have a loose cover doesn't sit as flush with the bumper + the release mechnism on the bonnet seems a bit stiff)... I then think i will be truly happy.

As for driving impressions - gotta say i am loving the exhaust note!  Not loving the tappety engine noise at idle though...  shame as it does detract a little... but apparently its "Normal" according to threads on here and the dealers...

Anyone any good with Photoshop?  I am intrigued by the idea of getting the BBS CH alloys anodised black, or a very dark grey... I have seen them fitted to a red audi tt: http://www.tt-forum.co.uk/ttforumbbs/viewtopic.php?t=88510&highlight=&sid=94ec085603ebd1393c2c4be69ed14c7b (http://www.tt-forum.co.uk/ttforumbbs/viewtopic.php?t=88510&highlight=&sid=94ec085603ebd1393c2c4be69ed14c7b) wouldn't mind seeing a mock-up of what it looked like on my red GTi... intrigued... only really thinking of having them done as the front two alloys have VERY mild kerbing and I want them fixed before any perishing kicks in...

Thanks, I guess it is all down to individual taste at the end of the day, but i just feel the GTi looks "right" with Monza alloys...
