Well im looking into getting my RCD300 replaced with a MFD2 Sat Nav unit (OEM). So i rang the local stealers and was quoted:
£1,500 for the Main Unit
£100 for the Ariel
£350 Labour
--------------
£1,950 TOTAL
CAN YOU BELIEVE IT!!!!
I said to them that i can get one of these units off ebay for around £500-700 and if i did would they install it for me. He said yes but he said that there have been alot of people buying off the bay whos units turned out to be wrong and stuff........
Any ideas as to what i should do? Really sick of my RCD300.
and before anyone says why not an after-market unit, its because i want to keep the original look
-
I know what you mean about the original look, but consider one of the new kenwood units, which is 100% screen, works with ipods and phones and better value for money than that!
-
Well I think it's down to personal choice.
I forked out the £2K for VW SatNav, just so it matches the rest of the car! I'm sure its not the best system on the market by a long way but I didn't want an externally mounted TomTom, etc to spoil the look of the car...
I just wish the CD player would play .MP3s and you could get a TrafficMaster and Speed Camera upgrade for the SatNav.
Cheers
John

£2,000 is alot to pay for just a head unit! But ye i want to preserve the original look of the car and thats why im keeping it OEM.
I've seen one of these units with GPS Antenna for £399 on the bay but im a bit vary now just incase i buy it and it doesnt work in my 55 Plate GTi. The dealer did say it had happened before with people buying off the bay and then being screwed.
I just need to know if the MFD2 DVD version will fit any MK5 GTi regardless of year of manufacture (mines a 55 reg).....
-
by the sounds of it your dealer is trying to put the wind up you and get you fork out a ridiculous price!
have a search on ebay and look for those with the most feedback. I know there are a couple who are based in Lithuania but people on the UKMKIV's site have had very good service from these guys and delivery is usually within 7 days
-
This is the one im eyeing up:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=020&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&viewitem=&item=300115942683&rd=1&rd=1 (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=020&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&viewitem=&item=300115942683&rd=1&rd=1)
User has 100% feedback (based in London) and the unit comes complete with:
Nav System VW MFD2 /RNS 2
Code Card
User manual (PDF file format)
GPS Antenna
£255 current bid, Probably will go for £300 which is dirt cheap!
Let me know what you guys think.
BUT, would this fit my GTI (55) ?

http://www.volkswagen.co.uk/accessories/details?part_no=1T0057194C
VW only quote £1,428 on their web site. (+plus fitting.)
-
i don't see why not; with the MKIV there were two versions and you could retro-fit the later version into earlier cars
email the seller as they (in theory) should have an idea. the only thing I'm not sure about is if you need some sort of plug & play adaptor :undecided:
edit - plus you'd then need to buy the latest DVD maps

thats without the GPS antenna and fitting. GPS antenna is around £100 and VW labour an hour is around £85

Would this MFD2 effect in anyway the speaker setup in my car?
-
People say that it sounds better due to a different amp.

Hi
I bought a MFD2 from ebay about 4 months ago, a CD version, from navi555.
The unit is easy to install if you have any DIY skills you should be able to do it yourself.
Its should be a direct swap, there are quite afew DIY's on the internet if you do it yourself.
One thing I found was the location of the gps antenna is very important regarding reception. Alot place it inside the dash but I found the sat reception was crap so I have mine in the headlining near the rear view mirror. Another thing to look out for is the NAV CD/DVD the one I got with the unit is a 06 copy which works fine, I bought what I thought was an original 06/07 Teleatlas CD from ebay but it is a piece of crap and doesn't work all the time now and after checking it appears its a knockoff. Buying an CD direct from Teleatlas now.
I know some aftermarket ones have better functionality, touch screen etc but the MFD2 is fine. I have a Nokia car kit plugged in and an Ipod interface instead of a cd changer and it all works perfectly. Right the mfd2 does not have "birds-eye" view etc but with the directions as voice announcements I have found it great. Most of all it looks OEM.

Cheers Dave N
I also have a Parrot CK3000 BlueTooth kit plugged into my RCD300 (which came with the car) so when i change the units over i'll have to figure out how to wire that back up.
How did you get the antenna up in the rear view mirror?

Just looked the guy up and he has this for sale http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/sat-nav-VW-NAVIGATION-SYSTEM-MFD2-RNS-DVD-VERSION_W0QQitemZ200114109855QQihZ010QQcategoryZ75327QQcmdZViewItem (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/sat-nav-VW-NAVIGATION-SYSTEM-MFD2-RNS-DVD-VERSION_W0QQitemZ200114109855QQihZ010QQcategoryZ75327QQcmdZViewItem)
"sat nav VW NAVIGATION SYSTEM MFD2 RNS DVD VERSION "
£450 +P&P
How much did you pay and was the service good?
-
I routed the cable behind the glovebox then up along the edge of the A-pillar. You cna then feed the cable in the font edge of the headlining until you get to the centre. Then pull the headlining down a bit and push the antenna in, mine is at the dotted area begin the mirror which apparently has not metalized coating in that area. The antenna is not visable from the drivers side and from the exterior you cant see it either.
The car kit should be fine, just unplug the connector from the RCD 300 and plug it in the the MFD2, the car kit audio is on a little seperate plug that should be easy to plug in.
By the way I think the audio improved over the RCD300.
That DVD unit looks cheap as I paid £350 for my CD unit.

Thanks Dave N.
Any real benefit getting the DVD version rather than the CD version?
Hes selling a CD version for £299 + £45 P&P....
-
I've been looking into this, as I've just ordered my GTI and refuse to pay full price for the Satnav! Dj.Kolia on e-bay seems to be a preferred source according to what I've found on various forums, and the latest 'C' model (£499) allows you to play a CD as well as navigate - beware, I don't believe that earlier versions do... He reports to be UK-based, too, which would provide me with a bit of reassurance.
I'm also tempted due to the reported increase in audio quality, although I wonder whether this might be dictated by the number of speakers - RCD300 owners will only have 8 installed, whereas if we'd specififed a 500 or MFD 2 then we'd have 10........
-

I would get the "C" version if it was black like the previous versions but it has silver buttons and stuff and they look tacky and cheap
So on versions A and B you cant navigate and listen to music ?
-
I have only just bought a MFD2 cd version from dj Kolia for £389 and no problems with it. Unit, GPS antenna, code card and 2006DX cd with TMC. Just followed the Doc's advice about taking off the top vent, airvents, etc. Took out my RCD300. The only thing I had to do was to make a cut on one of the aerial connectors on the mfd2 for the cable to fit. Placed the GPS antenna in a gap between the top air vent and the dash (where there is a bulge) and put everything back together. Works a treat. Best thing I have bought for my car yet.
-
I have an mfd2 sat nav cd rom type and can comprehensively say mine runs music cds in the nav cd rom slot, and mines an 05

That's better than I thought, thanks - but does that mean you can use nav OR the CD, but not both? Presumably it would be better to have a CD changer or iPod connection....?
-
i have a 6 disc changer in the arm rest but if i remove sat nav cd- rom, i have the option of a 7th slot! and no you cant use nav system with no disc in drive
-
Got DVD Sat Nav with iPod link in mine because I like the standard integrated look to the car. Yes it was somewhat costly and you can no doubt get a better specced aftermarket system, but it was factory fitted and is fully covered by VW warranty. It can play CD's in the DVD slot (but not at same time as using Nav, obviously) and the iPod allows up to 6 playlists, the first 5 in the iPod and the 6th is the whole iPod content. No track or artist information can be displayed and it will only show track numbers up to 99, then reverts back to 1 again, but it works fine and can be controlled via the MFSW without any problem. The Docs Nokia threads shows it should be an easy DIY install. I like it

ive made my decision and will be buying from dj Kolia the cd version

any pictures mate of the above?
Is the antenna totally hidden under the top air vent or is it resting on the dash?
-
can u guys with MFD2 confirm the following for me please:
The display turns off when you go above 10mph?
Is that true? and if so, can this be bypassed?
-
The AUX video in will as far as I know but Denison do a AV adapter http://www.dension4u.de/shop/product_info.php?products_id=1466 and a bypass that allows in motion video http://www.dension4u.de/shop/product_info.php?products_id=1699. But at €149 + €169 to get the two its a bit steep for an in-car video interface.
I have also seen this one that claims to do both,
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/AV-Multimedia-Interface-Adapter-for-VW-MFD2-RNS2_W0QQitemZ120112349755QQihZ002QQcategoryZ139823QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem and at £80 its a bit better though I have no experiance if its any good.

The 10mph thing is only for the video input whilst driving, map display and everything else is always there.
I made my own aux audio input cable using a cutdown IDC plug out to a 3.5mm jack, otherwise they are about £20 to buy. Ipod sits in the little cubbyhole under the headlight switch.
-
How do you guys attach the iPod to the MFD2 ?
I wouldnt mind hooking my ipod video upto it

The picture below, taken from the Doc's Nokia guide, shows the location where I placed my antenna, see red arrow. Once the air vents are removed, there is a hole where you can neatly slide the gps antenna into and out of view.

I have had no problems regarding loss of signal as there isn't any metal above it. Once reassembled, the antenna is out of view. (My dash below)

Hope this helps.

^^^^^
Im liking that neat install with the GPS areial hidden.
On question, can you add speed camera locations as POI with the VW system?

I've just bought the CD version from dj kolia and hopefully should have it soon to install and enjoy>
Thanks guys for your help!

i was considering getting the oem satnav and retrofitting, but now you say you cant play CD's whilst using the satnav I think i'll give it a miss - seems a bit pointless
wouldnt you think they could copy the CD onto the unit itself
-
buy the multichanger for the arm rest and you can have both!! not sure how much it is , cant think it would be too much
-
true... but that just means pulling even more of the interior apart - I have enough rattles as it is
-
One last question chaps:
How can i attach my Ipod 30Gb Video to the MFD2 ?
I want to use it for music and video.
Currently use an FM transmitter and that is
AND is the DVD version of the MFD2 better than the CD version?
Thanks

There is no need for the TrafficMaster "upgrade" - as it already uses the data - just make sure you have TMC enabled.
-
AND is the DVD version of the MFD2 better than the CD version?
Yup - full Europe mapping on one disc, greater numbers of POIs.
-
and also make sure the Sat nav cd rom has TMC ability as the cheapest uk version doesnt have it installed , only the new 2007-2008 worth approx £115 has Now finally come with the facilty. Previously tmc wasnt available on the uk version , only for europe maps only.
-
well i should hopefully have it by staurday so will update the thread.
-
Let us know how it goes m8 because i am also currently looking on ebay for a sat nav system from VW and this thread has helped alot! My local stealers here were asking £1800 without labour, just getting the part to Gib

Very true.

Actually, not quite correct. The VW stealers didn't supply the earlier UK TMC discs, but they were always available from Bosch/Blaupunkt independent dealers, or indeed directly from TeleAtlas, at www.NavShop.com

Will do mate. Ye my stealers said the same. No way on this earth am i paying that much!
Dj Kolia on ebay seems to be a prefered buyer and navi55. I bought from Dj Kolia as he was doing the CD version for £389 which came with all parts (the dvd version does not come with a nav cd and the stealers want £185 for that!!!). I paid £20 P&P so all in all £409. Dj Kolia seems like a nice guy and has been in contact with me through out so far.

- how can i find him thou? He has a shop on ebay. Here is the direct link to the DVD version of MFD2 which costs £399 in his shop:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/DVD-VW-MFD2-MFD-2-SAT-NAV-GOLF-PASSAT-TOURAN-GPS-RNS_W0QQitemZ260125461683QQihZ016QQcategoryZ75327QQcmdZViewItem

I rang the local stealers and they said the Sat Nav DVD is £185 (CD version is £105 but this wount work in the DVD MFD2). This is why i opted for the CD version of MFD2!!!!
- ....And i really hope id be able to play music from my 6 disc changer. Not sure thats possible while the sat nav dvd is operational. Someone correct me if im wrong.?!?!
-
With the 6 CD changer plugged in you should be able to use it. The restriction is you cant use the UNIT DVD/CD slot while using navigation. The software uses the DVD in the slot rather then loading it all up.
So you should be able to use the changer as long as you dont have an ipod adapter on the same interface.

Update:
Got the unit from Dj Kolia of ebay. Arrived on time and well packed. Everything was included in the package. Dj Kolia i would recommend!
I've installed it and it looks fab! Sound quality is way better than the RCD300!!!!
I need to move the GPS antenna to anotehr location (currently hidden inthe central console) because im not gettinga GPS fix.
What are some gd locations to put it so it is hidden and out the way?
-

The guy who fitted my Nav unit pulled the instrument cluster out and stuck the GPS aerial on top of the steering column. The guy said it can 'see through' foam and glass, but not metal. It works perfectly... never missed a beat!

what if i stuck it in the glove box?
