Title: Picking up ED30 soon - what should I look out for?
Post by: p3eps on 28 May 2007, 18:43
I got a call from the dealer saying my Ed30 was going to be here at the end of next week - I'm starting to get excited now!

I've heard of a few people with gripes about not having a lid where the ashtray should be (non smoking pack) so I'm ready for that one.
I've also read somewhere that you're 'supposed' to get metal dustcaps on your wheels?  Is this true?!

Is there anything else I should look out for when I pick the car up?

I also need to decide on whether to take GAP insurance, and also the Supaguard - as well as which servicing schedule?  (I only do about 8000 miles per year)

Also... Mudflaps?!?!  Are they available on the Ed30?  Are they a good idea, or just an eye sore?!  My demo car definately had front ones.

Any advise / tips would be appreciated... then I can have a list of ammunition ready for the stealer!!

Mudflaps are available for the Mk5 GTi, as theres no difference in side skirts and rear bumper is also same shape. Look closley for any paint blemishes, dull spots etc on the paintwork.Cant answer about metal dust caps, some say it should others say it isnt.To be honest if they are metal ones, they would soon be nicked. Get some lock on ones with VW logos on which look smart

Ensure you take the order form down with you that lists all your optional extra's as it has been known for them to have been missed off (see thread on MF steering wheel missed off).

I've heard some people have still had the transport blocks left in the springs on the suspension.

Litre of oil in the boot.

I took GAP insurance, but said I wanted money knocking off as I could get it cheaper elsewhere.

I took out full servicing, maintenance and tyres package out at £25/month (10k miles.year) see below
http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=56701.0

Otherwise it's just the obvious, dents, scratches.paint blemishes, alloy wheel damage etc :nerd:

I too am picking up my ED30 end of next week (hopefully), I think it's worth seeing if your insurance company offers Gap, I remember reading somewhere on one of the forums that this can be done.

It's Specialist Cars, Aberdeen you're getting yours from, isn't it? I got mine from them, and the handover was faultless

They'll take you round the car, probably inside under the lights, to begin with, then move it outside so you can have another look round for paint faults, etc. Take your time, and don't be rushed.

For 8k mile a year,  (same as me) I chose the time/distance servicing schedule...makes more sense costwise. In any case, the car has been filled with longlife oil from the factory, so even if you choose time/distance, then decide to change to longlife, the dealership can handle the servicing switchover easily.

Ignore the Supaguard option IMHO...I didn't think it worth the cost, and I'd prefer to wax the car myself to keep it protected. Judging by the number of times it was offered to me, I figure it's more of a commission earner for the dealership than any proper benefit to me.

My Edition 30 didn't come with metal valve caps, which I don't really mind...given that they tend to get pinched anyway by thieving little sh!ts for their bikes

I ordered the non-smoking pack, but it still came with a lid for the cubby hole

Oh, see what little freebies you can score off of them...I managed to score a little VW branded USB memory stick...lets see what you can come away with :)

Hurdy:

A litre of oil in the boot?!  Is that standard?
How much did you get your GAP insurance down to?

Phope:

Yep, its Specialist for me too!
I'll probably do a couple of thousand miles in the first month or two, and then do about 1000 every 3 months!
The supaguard looks good in that they give you a pile of stuff in a natty bag - if I can get it for like £100 then I'll do it... but theres no way its worth £300 or whatever they want for it.
I've been informed that the dealer will give me a survey afterwards and that they want 5 stars for everything... and that if I tick 3 stars they're more inclined to give me freebies to persuade me to give them 5?!

Phil:

I asked about mudflaps for the Ed30 and the dealer said they weren't available as the bumper was different.  Then, whilst on the phone he crawled down and checked both an Ed30 and a GTI and said he was sure they were the same.  He's going to get back to me after checking with a mechanic... but he says although VW list it as not being able to take mudflaps, he thinks it will.
My head says to get them as they'll protect the car... but it will probably look better without them?!

StillWaiting:

I'm going to phone my insurance company tomorrow and see if they cover GAP for a little extra, and what their T&C are on it.  I'm not taking any finance on the car... so I need to make sure that they don't just settle my debt, and actually give me the value of the car back.  If not, there are some places on the 'net that people have posted on here... about £150 for the 3 years as opposed to my dealers £400.

But the OP will need them colour coding on the ED30 for the rear (and possibly the front too?)

Depends on the color of your car. They protect, sure, but they do not "ozonate the air" as as couple of very famous Russian writers put it. Meaning - they do not make the car look better, do they?

Peeps,

I asked for the litre of oil as my MKV TDI had one in when I took delivery of it

£250 for GAP, if they ask for more it goes in the dealers pocket!

The car is steel grey, so they shouldn't look too out of place.  I might ask the dealer if I can hold them against the bumper to see how they look before fitting them!

Hmmm.. plastic grey mudflaps stuck onto the colour coded valance on the edition 30? That doesn't sound right..

so teddy, what do all cars with mudflaps look like that have colour coded valances?? they all look fine, so why not colour code the tyres aswell or do those look out of place aswell?????.

Thats like saying 'plastic grey valance stuck onto the colour coded rear bumper on the GTI'

I dont think colour coding the mudflaps is a feasible option - thats for sure!

Ok, I've finally got the handle on the lid for the front console in the GTI/Ed30.  If you order the car with smoking pack and/or front centre armrest you will get a lid on the front storage area. If you don't have the front centre armrest and/or smoking pack you won't get the lid.  Mine came with a lid and I just have the armrest. Hopefully that clears things up a bit.

Youv'e all forgot the one thing that is sometimes missing - and without it, the GTI handles completely differently, due to the weight distribution!

It is . . . .

 . . . . wait for it . . . .

the BOTTLE OPENER !!!!!

Oh, BTW, the Ed30 has a different rear bumper to the standard GTI, so the rear mudflaps might not fit.  The fronts are OK though.

Speaking of which mine looks pretty good now. once she's clean I'll put up some pics - it took probably 6 weeks to fully dry and the bubbles continued to dissipate throughout.

Decided against the Supagard...

I've bought about 100 quids worth of cleaning products instead, and will give the car a right good polish and waxing before I start running it in properly!  Hopefully for a start I'll wax it every couple of weeks... but I'm sure I'll get bored of that!  As long as I get a decent coat on for a start.

I did see Meguiars do a NXT Spray Wax - which you can top up your coat quickly.  I might order some of that too.
I think I have an online shopping problem in that I like getting things delivered... it brightens up my day at work

Nearly there... tomorrow at 2pm and I get to pick her up!
I'm getting quite excited!!!

So my list for the dealer is:
Bottle of oil
Bottle opener
Check all my options are present
Check car / wheels for marks, dents etc
Check the transport blocks have been removed

GAP - I discovered my insurance give me 1 years GAP on a new car.
Supagard - Not bothering... have Friday off work to get a few coats of wax on!

Anything else?!

I dont think the thieves, boy racers, petrol stations and heavy right foot will come into play until I leave the dealer btw

So where exactley does this bottle opener go? No rude comments please I have no intention of shoving it up my jaxy.
I didn't get one with mine. I'm not about to go and torch the stealers showroom yet but do feel as though I'm missing out

BTW. Make sure when you get your bottle of oil, it comes in the leather case with velcro, stops it rattleing around the boot and dripping everywhere.

enjoy your new motor. I've had mine a week almost, nearly run in following a couple of long steady motorway trips, I tried the launch control (tentativley) today. Hold on to your pants!

Oh yeh nearly forgot my mums car has mudflaps, she swears by them

Bottle opener only comes if you've specced the armrest option. It should be in the drinks holder next to the handbrake. It fits in the bottom or can act as the divider for the cups.  :nerd: I think the oil coming in a leather case must be dealer specific as I got a litre of oil but it came in a sealed bag (plastic), and it was Mobile as that's what my dealer uses.

Picked up the car today... still smiling
Bottle opener was in place, but no sign of any oil in the boot.  I asked the dealer about it, and he played totally dumb.  He then went and asked his boss - who also played dumb.  He said they put out 5+ GTI's a month, and none have ever had a bottle of oil included - and perhaps this was something that VW would send me.  What a cop out!

He didnt discuss anything about the service plans or fixed maintenance plans... but was obviously in a hurry as another customer was sitting waiting at his desk!

I drove the car home and immediately started cleaning!
A quick hosing, followed by some Meguiars NXT Generation Car Wash with a Meguiars micro fibre mitt.  When washing I noticed a nasty wee scratch on the black front bumper section - just above the number plate.
I then polished the car using Meguiars Step 2 Deep Crystal polish.
I then waxed using Harley Pure Carnauba Wax - stopped for dinner - and then did another coat!  Very hard going, but looks the biz!

On my 1st coat of wax I noticed that on my boot lid there is a TINY pin prick sized bit of rust.  It seems to be a miniscule chip that has rusted.  Very odd considering the car was only built in week 20!

I was supposed to pick up my single DIN stereo fascia adapter whilst at the dealer today, but it slipped my mind.  When I go up tomorrow to collect it, I'll be pointing out my scratch and rust dot!!!
I'll also be waxing my wheels with Poorboys Wheel Sealant tomorrow in an attempt to reduce the amount of brake dust!

Got Continental tyres - are they decent?!

Will try and get some pics up tomorrow at some point.

Rust and a scratch on a brand new car

Reject it

Sure they can fix this simply enough. I bought a new Toyota for the missus last September and it had a rusted paint chip on the nearside front wing. Simple enought to remove and repaint the wing to good as new. Get it back to the dealer asap.

I'm sure you will enjoy the car immensely though

One other point, tell then NOT to repolish the car when you put it in for the paintwork, they won't use a wax and will destroy all your hard work !

indeed they will! Simple solution is to print off on a piece of paper saying 'DO NOT WASH THIS CAR' and stick it in your windscreen  i've ended up doing that as my dealers put fine scratches in my paintwork

"Rust" dot will be a speck of rail dust...very common in any newly delivered cars, and is a residue from the transport process

Best way to get rid of it completely is to claybar the whole car to pull off any rail dust left, then wax the car properly

I had a few specks on painted plastic parts when mine was delivered (from the same dealer as p3eps :) )

I think you were right... when I removed my 2 layers of wax and had a proper go at it - it came off!
The scratch on the front bumper has been noted by the dealer and I have to call and make a bodyshop appointment to have the deep scratch filled and the black section re-sprayed.  Its the size of my thumbnail... but its just annoying so I'd rather get it fixed now!

Phope... did you get a bottle of oil from Specialist?

Pabs32... I'll try and get some pics up soon - been too busy so far!  Hoping to go on a long 'break in' run tomorrow... so will maybe stop for some pics!

Cass... REJECT IT?!?! - I've been waiting 14 weeks for it!  Unless it had no engine I'd be getting whatever is wrong fixed!!  I'll follow Rhyso's advice and stick a DO NOT WASH sticker in the window!!

Sigh...
I'm really starting to have enough already!!
I went round to pick my girlfriend up this morning as we had a day trip planned to start the running in of my car.  When I got to her house and she tried to get in (in the pi55ing rain!) the passanger door wouldnt open.  She started yelling at me thinking I'd locked it for fun - but no matter what I did, it wouldnt open from the inside or out.  The outside handle just pulls like the car is locked, and the inside one feels really stiff.  When I press the unlock button I can hear it click - but nothing happens.

I phoned my dealer who told me to try pressing the remote button twice (nah - really!) and then advised me to take it up.  After sitting there for an hour and a half they told me they'd have to order a new locking mechanism - but they werent sure if this would actually fix it - and could I take the car back up on Wednesday.

I am livid!  My whole day was ruined, and the customer service at the dealer is pathetic.  They expect me to drive 10 miles accross town in ruch hour traffic - then 10 miles back to my work to get this fixed.  This will probably take me close to 2 hours in the morning!  I'll be phoning tomorrow and demanding that they pick the car up from my work and leave me a car.  I'm also going to write a letter to VW customer services as the dealers attitude has been poor from the start and I feel completely dissatisfied with the whole process.
