can some one explain why no one will insure me on a 1300 mk2 jst because its had alloys, new back box and bin lowerd 60mm?? the best quote iv got is £3000 n that was with mi dad as the main driver!! GRRRRR really anoyed im picking it up tomorrrow and i wnt be insured!!! evan if i only tell them it has alloys its still about 1500 to insure!!
-
because its the law-obiding citizen which is paying for those without insurance.
mind you, the max fine for having no insurance is like £200 or something silly.
£3000 or a possibility of £200 max. MAKES NO SENSE!!
corrupt country i say.
-
£3k?
How old are you? the mods should not make that much difference!
-
im only 17! when i was on my standerd 1300 mk2 under my dads name it was only £500 a year!! i dont understand why 3 mods would make it £2500 more!!! GRRRRRR
-
hmm, dunno what the going rate is for 17yr olds tbh as we have not dealt woth under 19yr old for over 10years, still sounds a bit steep though!
Have you tried Adrian Flux (08700 777888)?
Martin
-
Try virgin car insurance ... im paying 1,600 for my 1.6 mk2 Golf Driver .. and im 17
-
cheers guys!!! il give both of them a ring wen i get in from work!!
-
modding your car in any way will make your insurance go up. I had a 1.3 8v fiesta. about 3 horse power. i was getting silly quotes like that from certain insurance providers despite me asking them to "quote me happy".
I found that swift cover, the one thats purely online was well cheaper. One reason is that there was no option for me to enter all my mods, (which were purely asthetic anyway).

mate, if their website does not ask then they probably dont cover mods so you may as well just save you cash and not bother cos you probably aint covered properly anyway!
You must declare all modifications asthetic of not!
-
Tesco come out quite cheap for young lads - not sure about mods, but worth doing an online quote

they did have options but not all the ones that i had. I clicked the radio boxes to check the ones that i could. *Whats a guy de do.*Italian american accent*.

Best thing to do at 17 is DO NOT MOD THE CAR, unless your prepared to pay stupid money.
Keep the car standard, learn to drive it and appreciate it, then when you've built up a no claims bonus and know what your after then Mod it to suit your style
-
Try elephant/admiral/bell with you as main driver and add your parents as named drivers
-
although... if you buy a car that's already modified - surely you can claim that you weren't told that they were non oe parts and pretend to be daft about it.
-
I wouldnt chance it, if some one was to drive into you and there insurance sent a assessor out to view your car they would probably pick up anything that looked out of place and the could end up refusing to pay your claim. I dont think its a chance worth taking for the sake of a set of wheels !
-
the whole thing is stupid really, would they charge me extra for painting my vw badges black? also does your insurance cost more if you have aftermarket bigger brakes fitted coz that would just be silly
-
Mate, Quinn Direct are your friends.
When i was 17 i had a corsa sport 1.4 16v.
Mods -
Alloys
lowered 60mm
backbox
Cost me 1450 for the year tpft. Also with Quinn Direct they allow you to drive anyones car with permission even on tpft.
-
Hooooooowww much??! By eck.
-
at 17 got my 1.4 Mk3 golf insured for £1100 tpft, that was with alloys, if you phone compaines up and just say that you have locking wheel nuts etc then usually the price of alloys dont make it go up, the price will soar up for lowering your car though, i know you want it to llok nice but it really is best to keep you car standard at a young age because insurance companies just htink boy racer and your insurance rockets.
I'm coming up for 19 soon and then on my Mk3 my insurance will be £500, and for a Mk2 gti with martin it'll cost me round £1400 tpft, Your better off waiting a few years mate
-
when i was 17 i was with norwich union direct, £1100 on mums insurance though on a 1.6 driver, no mods. and then when i was 18 i was paying £1600 on a 16v on dads insurance.
i would try and get your own policy and not rely on being on your parents insurance.
-
Im young-ish (20) and found kwick fit to be considerably cheaper when getting my motor insured (notice I say cheaper, not cheap as I'm still paying stupid money just to be insured, I want all insurance people to burn, except Martin). Also just echoing what someone else said, at 17 don't mod your car becasue these insruance companys will bum you till you bleed. Keep things standard for a few years, either that or get bumed.
Good luck

i know its a bit crap and it doesnt work wonders with handeling but can you class it as standerd if you take a hacksaw to the springs to lower it?

urm no i wouldn't have said so! and if the insurance company finds out you've done that you can kiss goodbye to your insurance!!
always declare anything and everything you have done; its not worth the risk

depends on the insurer thats why its always worth checking out specialists aswell. Ok we dont insure under 19s (like it or not and however good a driver you are statistically they have loads more claims) and sometimes the policy may be a couple £'s more but you wont get ripped off when you mod the car, most cosmetic mods (alloys, bodykits, suspension etc) dont even effect the premium.
I want all insurance people to burn, except Martin
lol thanks.....i think
-
ah insurance, can be a pain in the arse and their young driver quotes are always crazy, Thats why i had a mini, beetle and a old mk2 golf and went with footman and james on classic insurance policy, im coming up to 20 and never paid more than £500 with me as only driver. ALtho on the mk3 ive gone with virgin insurance and its 500 per year (and paying monthly) even tho moms main driver. Im going to do this till im 21 i think (and im getting decent money rather then weekend minimum wage, curse been a student) then once 21 quotes drop a little aswell (not alot mind you) and start buildin no claims  makes world of difference, if i'd had 3years no claims my insurance with just me on would drop by around £600!!!
But ive saved over 1500 by going classic insurance...and in the bugs case tax exempt
-
Your age mate is the big problem we have all been there just takes time to get some driving experience and build up your no claims. Im 27 and can only just start getting sensible quotes for high perfomance cars.
-
Yea I will be screwed over as well, havent passed yet because of uni and other things but I have been looking on confussed, go compare and tons of others.
The cheapest I found was £1,435.35 from ECar. Thats with a mk2 gti with no mods third party fire and theft and as 22 years old!!! Most of the insurers wont even touch me or give quotes that are tripple the worth of the car.
They wounder why people drive without insurance
Also with ECar i tried adding some mods, with lowered suspension and new alloys it bumped it up to about 1,800 third party fire and theft.
-
22 isn't that young any more, I think your main problem is your 0NCB. I'm 21 with a MK5 GTI (group 17) so it can be done.

Yea now a days its all about the NCB, age affected it slighly but not as much as id hoped. Oh well, after the first year [hopfully] I will have 1 year NCB then it will drop by a bit. No rubba dubba for the first year atleast.

yea thats some good tips there, perhaps i can reduce my quote by calling each company up and seeing if they can beat the quote. I think I will wait until I actually have the car first though :D

^^I'm with Adrian Flux at the mo but after my ban i went with www.Bell.co.uk, I think they may have a minimum age though, but they specialise in No no claims. Also would recommend that if you're being honest about the mods then be honest about who's driving. At least that way you start earning NCD. You can insure your Dad as second driver which will bring the premimum down, I'm under 30 and still have my old boy on my insurance, saves me about 10% If you can get it in a garage, fit an alarm with cert all helps to bring it down.
Hate paying for it but I'd rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it, if you follow me.
PS, driving without insurance is def bigger fine than £200.00 plus you think it's hard getting insured now, try it if you get huckled for no insurance.
-
Just drive your car standard for the first year or two. You'll realise after a few years "why on earth did I pay ALL that extra to insure a few mods when I don't pay a penny more now?"
