thinking of getting something a bit more luxurious.
I could get a 110 BHP mk4 TDI and get it mapped...or a 20vT mk4 Golf.
I'd have to get it on hpi i think but could pay it off with student loan.
insurance on TDI=£1k on 20vt = £1300
and im paying £1550 on my Golf until renewal next month.
hmm..i'd so miss it though...

Sell it

Sell it and regret it. You will always get another!

it's costing me sh!t loads to run which i cant really afford....i know with something a bit more recent it's gonna be more reliable.
Not sure which mk4 to get though.....i'd love the 20vT but the diesels are so tempting!

Mate, my run with MK4 golfs has been very bad very very bad
i bought a 2001 one owner gt TDI 115 (6speed) Full Vw sh only 63k on it etc etc Lovely car, I sold my 136k mk2 16v gti as i thought it was getting old.
After 3-4 months of owning it it had various sensors, pumps and a TURBO replaced on it.... costing about 2 grand!!!!!
I thought this was a one off so a few years later i bought a mk4 gti turbo..... full leather etc with 100k on the clock, with full service history etc. I owned this for a month tops.... needed new brakes and tyres etc this cost about 500 quid then a week later the ABS pump broke and then as i was about to replace that the clutch and flywheel started smoking totalling in about 3k in bills. I cut my losses and sold to a mechanic who i knew and was honest about as he had the time to fix it...... i just couldnt afford it!!!
BUY A MK3....... These are much better built!!!!!!!! i have had 3 mk3's and all of em have been trouble free motoring!!!!! there is just too much that can go wrong on a mk4. they arent built as well.....!!!!

you wont feel the same driving anything other than a mk2!

yeah, that's a bad experience alright, but it may be one-off i know people who've had mk4's for ages with no problems what so ever. Trouble is with mk3 is the only one i'd get is the 16v and again that's high tax and insurance again.

There are better things to spend a student loan on, and hpi on a 5k car is pretty daft anyway.
Yes there are a lot more things to go wrong on mk4's, and the parts are more expensive.. but that's the way it is with modern cars. You need to ask yourself if you can afford to own it, not just afford to buy it.
In 3 years of ownership my mk4 has cost me around 2k in repair bills, around the same in mods. Then add a service every 5000k, tyres, insurance, tax... hard slog for a student.

for a start the tax, insurance and fuel bills will be cheaper than my mk2. I think it'd also cost less in replacement parts (though i can get stuff at trade through a friend anyway ) I'll be able to afford the finance and insurance i think. My student loan will pay off the insurance then i'll be left with just the finance which will be about £2k after i've paid the deposit. i wont really need my student loan as i'm living at home. So i'm treating myself.
It tends to make sense in my head.

I wish lol... i get trade prices and it still costs way more than my rallye parts-wise. Like with all out-of-warranty cars though it's a gamble.. i'm happy with mine, no reason why you cant be too. Actually, wanna buy mine?

sadly not....gotta get it through finance or something...yet to see how much my student loan will be.

i'm confused how a mk4 20vt with obviously more power and value will be cheaper to insure? i'm sure you've had quotes but that doesn't seem to make sense?
my opinion? i can't ever see the point getting in debt over a car, no matter how well you can justify it to yourself.

Right, i worded it a bit wrong. I've just done a yearof insurance on my mk2 at £1550, on renewal ive just paid £1100 but the 20vt is £1300 this year, so it will be cheaper if you get me?!
as of debt, im not too worried if iknow for sure i can manage it.
-
mk 2 classic, stay with it mate
-
20vt tirsty im told?
-
not really.. 32mpg average .. and thats with engine mods.
-
what is it costing you so much on at the moment. I find it goes through stages, but once you get them right they seem to be managable and fairly chepa to run. TOUCH WOOD.

clutch, gearbox seals, front suspension (then tracking and so on) getting thorough MOT etc...
Last week has been a pleasure to drive, but i'm sure something will go tits up soon. I've decided to wait it out for a bit,get some money together to atleast pay off insurance and a bit of the car then look into it

Someone agree's! MK4's are highly problematic. Sensors, this that, fault codes pop up. More head ache than my mk2.
mk3's....most reliable out fo the lot imo

after seeing a few mk4's at the mbluewater meet tonight i really want one....i dont want a mk3 as i'd have to get a 16v and they're juicy and about £2k+ which could go to a mk4. I also love the blue clocks on the mk4
-
sounds like a tough decision. after checking out alex's (supreme) mk4 on porsche rims, i could easily live with that!

I know I'm a bit late in this topic to quote something off the 1st page, but I get trade prices and everything for my '03/53 Skoda costs at least twice what it does for our mk2, including insurance!
Still, diesel = win :)

had the bora over a year, nothing has gone wrong with it! had to change a tyre due to ware but you get that with most cars!
-
hmm i keep swaying between the two yesterday i though about using the money to buy wheels/tyres more lowering, new exhaust and bodywork done on the mk2...

and im paying £1550 on my Golf until renewal next month.
if you don't mind me asking, how much is your car valued at? it seems mental to pay that kinda money to go fully comp (i presume)

it's area and all that isn't it though?
who are you with?
TooFunkyHouse- i know it's pricey but were you driving around in a mk2 GTI when you were only just 18
-

i'm wi elephant, cheapest around for me. yeah mind they vary by mileage too, so you don't want to be paying to be covered for miles you don't use. TPFT is the way to go on cheap cars, cos excesses are massive for us young drivers, and then you couldn't justify claiming for the value of the car and the increase in premiums thereafter.

just ran through moneysupermarket. I get quotes of £700-800 but go on their site and it turns to over a grand.I may just change my current cover to TPFT. I'm with Admiral so i'll call 'em in the morning and get TPTF to save some pennies.

got a quote for my mk2 with my misses on the policy too, TPFT £353. both with 3 points and a claim each, but 4yrs no claims and we're 23. try adrian flux and see what you come up with.
on my vectra SRI130 they saved me £300 on my renewal price!!!!

na, i didn't bother. Got sick of calling companies.
I've noe taken out a TPFT policy with Admiral for £1100 so it cuts my monthly out goings a bit...maybe i'll have some cash to spend on the mk2 or buy a mk4
-
well i hope you got a good deal, but i'd still suggest giving them a ring, they are quick with the quoting, and could save you a bundle. Sounds like i'm on commision or something, i'm not honest! if anything just do it to cure my curiousity!
