Has anyone got any tips on what to use when cleaning the engine bay. I am also looking at replacing the radiator hoses as these are in a sorry state (any ideas where to get some). Can i jet wash the engine and if so do i need to take any special precausions when doing this.

You'll need to degrease the engine bay first - but almost every single degreaser i've found & brought from either Halfords or similiar stores are sh!t.. I don't know what he use's but a chap I know runs a car valeting service and has some stuff that works wonders! - I'll try find out what it is..
As for jet washing it, just cover up your electrics (use cling film or the like).

If you could let me know when you find out as the engine bay really lets the car down at the moment

I used, amusingly, a product called 'Jizer' to degrease my engine bay, along with a steamer and some bog brushes - worked pretty well!
-
steam cleaner does the job, even if you can find a jet wash that has a hot wash option will do it good. once you've drivent here the heat of the engine will make it easier to remove anyway.
-
ill try the jet wash then i think. just worries me that the car might not start and ill look like a plonker. ill cover the dizzy and the coil and keep my fingers crossed.

My Mechanic uses a steam cleaner, works wonder. Anyone have one you could borrow ?

I use fairy liquid and a stiff brush followed by my karcher pressure washer!! Works well as it is designed to remove oils and greases from chip pans.
I just don´t tell the wife!

I use fairy liquid
Which is full of salt & lots of other sh1t that will not do your seals, paintwork etc any good.

Thats why I said ´FOLLOWED BY MY KARCHER PRESSURE WASHER!!!

Steam Cleaner or take it out degrease it paint it and rebuild it  if you steam clean or pressure wash it just leave the engine running if it dies you'll know what you just soaked

GUNK engine degreaser is pretty good. Warm up your engine and then put the GUNK on, it smells quite bad I do warn you but really does the job. Leave it for a few minutes and then pressure wash it off. Works really well :)

engine clean is on hold due to hydraulic leak on the gear box ( i think ) once this is sorted im getting back to some scrubbing
