Guys and girls,
I don't usually write on these forums, but I thought you should all know about this.
Whilst bored on a recent Sunday afternoon, I went to a VW dealer in Aylesbury to see if they had an Ed30 in the showroom, as I've got one on order, however, not from this dealer.
Low and behold, they had a Steel Grey Ed30 in the showroom that looked stunning. However, whilst looking at the car from the rear I felt something wasn't right. It was then I realized that the rear valance was black and not painted in the cars body colour. Moreover, the valance wasn't even from a GTI, more like the ones on the GT. The exhaust was sticking out more because of this.
When I called the saleman over and pointed this out, he said that all Golfs rear valances were black. What rubbish!! I then pointed out that I had seen a red Ed30 and its valance was body colored. He then went on to say that it must of been painted by the dealer. I couldn't believe what I was hearing, and I certainly wasn't going to tell him that I had actually seen many more Ed30s and they all had body colored valances.
I decided not to argue the point, but give the car a closer inspection. I also noticed that the front nearside tyre had been changed and that the spare had been used, as dried mud was on the spare tyre.
Be warned people, this car was their showroom car and still for sale, when it had obviously had some minor scrape and been cheaply repaired with the wrong rear valance. I know salesmen have a tendency to tell fibs, but I feel this is outrageous from a main dealer. If your passing in the area, have a look, as I'm sure it will sill be in the showroom. Unfortunately, I couldn't take any pictures.
-
Hey dude, thanks for posting.
Just playing devils advocate here, but are you sure it was an Ed30?
By the way I'm not wishing to insult your intelligence or anything. :nerd:
-
No offense taken, but absolutely, it was an Edition 30. With all the badges and edition 30 interior. 100% Edition 30, just wish I'd taken my camera. If anyone reading this is near Aylesbury, pop in and have a look. It stands out like the dogs ********.
-
Definitely sounds a bit queer to me
-
dishonest thieving barstewards...
-
That's a bad show from a main dealer, I thought all ED30 were numbered as they were liminted?
I'm not trying to pick holes in your story Hully, but isn't the spare a space saver, like on the GTI?
-
Creep I think he means that the spare had been used and put back in the boot - but that there was mud on it, therefore had been used. Also the Edition 30's are not numbered. From what Hully's said, it certainly sounds like the dealer is trying stitch a prospective buyer up. Personally I would have reported them to Trading Standards and see if the 'salesman' would try to pull the wool over their eyes.
-
You're absolutely right Illyun, it was the space saver in the boot that had the mud on it. I could tell that the front tyre on the Pescara had been replaced as it had glue around it and the wheel like you get when you have new tyres put on by someone like Kwick Fit.
To be honest, I'm still amazed with what I saw and the BS that the salesman gave me.
Well I should be back down in the area in a few weeks, so I'll bob along there again with a camera if its still in the showroom and take some pics as evidence.
-
Oh I'm with you know, that's shamefull, I'd shop the dealer concered if I'd been told that.
-
I now have the pics as evidence. I took some sneaky pics of the rear valance with my camera phone, but I'm having problems getting them on this site. As soon as get the problems fixed I'll post them here. I couldn't actually believe it was still in the showroom; scandalous!
-
Looking forward to seeing these pics.
-
Shocking!
Surely if it has been in a bump or something they should replace it with the correct bumper

My sentiments exactly. I promise I will try and get the photos on here by tonight. Don't think they've come out too bad considering I had to be fairly covert about it!
-
Right, pics not brilliant, but I think its pretty clear that the bumper is wrong! Just what was the salesman trying to tell me when he said they all come like this!

Here's some more pics now I've worked out how to do it! :embarassed:

Dodgy or what?
-
shocking!!!
-
Very very strange! I simply can't get my head around why they would do this? If the car had been in some sort of bump, you would think they would try and get it close to 100% perfect before putting it in the showroom!
-
whats the front like, ie spoiler?
-
can't believe that they are trying to pass it off!! Like BMX said what was the front valance like?
-
That is truly shocking!
And not at all funny
That has to be reported, and then these scumbags can be sorted!!!
-
Let's get on with it then....
I'm disappointed that VW do not allow easier access but this is from their web site:
What is the contact address for Volkswagen UK?
Yeomans Drive
Blakelands
Milton Keynes
MK14 5AN
How do I contact Volkswagen Customer Care?
Telephone: 0800 711 811
-
What crooks!! Completely screws the look of a stunning looking car. That b@stard salesperson needs to be shot! The f***ing retard. I hope he gets the sack. Imagine if you was an honest customer who doesn't know nothing about the Ed30 who then spends £22k+ on what isn't the complete article. I'd kick up a stink if it was my dealer.
By the way... How much was it up for???
-
pm me the dealer info - I'll get in touch with VW UK asap...
-
It looks especially stupid with the colour coded side skirts.
-

The front valance is the standard Ed30 one, in that I mean its painted Steel Grey like the rest of the car. Have got a photo of the front on my camera phone, but it's playing up and not letting me email the pic . If I go there again I'll try and get some pics from the front, but believe me, it looks fine.

Details on the way to you Illyun.
-
I am absolutely outraged by this!
We all know dealers sometimes tell a few porkie pies, usually due to their lack of knowledge but this is shocking.
Is it shown on the VW cars database, i.e. online?
-
I've checked last night but couldn't find nothing.
-
Thanks Hully - I'll be giving VW UK a courtesy call today

Negative Batch, I don't believe the garage has advertised it for sale yet as it is one of their showroom cars. Hence I had to take sneaky pics of it when I was in the showroom. I'm sure they thought I had some sort of rear bumper fetish! Last time I asked them you could buy it if you wanted that spec, but would have to wait until it had been in the showroom a month or two. Usual dealer practise as the dealer receives the car discounted to them as it is specified as a showroom car.
-
Sorry for the late response, but the dealer would sell it at full retail as it is, in their eyes a new car. It was a 5 door with DSG and a few other bits, so off the top of my head, around the 25k mark. I'll have to ask if I go back again.
-
I emailed Mr Paul Willis - Director of Volkswagen UK and got the following response:
Thank you very much for pointing this out to me.
I have asked my Head of Operations to contact the retailer and ask them what is going on. Please give us a few days to investigate and we'll come back to you.

I'll keep you posted - if a dealer/distributor did this to one of my company's brands I'd be livid..
-
Just popped over from the GII site and read what is going on. You may want to direct the manager of that eastablishment onto this site for him to ponder on. I am sure he does not want this sort of thing going onto the internet. You may be sure that he may do the right thing if he see´s this!!
-
Nice one acwats. Lets see what happens now.
-
hehe!
Can't wait to find out what they say!!
They got a brand new grey Ed30 at my local dealer. I asked them why it didn't have a black bumper!!
Went on to explain what I meant and they were laughing like hell. They did say it was poor show tho!!

I emailed Mr Paul Willis - Director of Volkswagen UK and got the following response:
woah that was a quick response from a big cat in VW. Looking forward to hearing the result of this.
It feels like a murder investigation..... or maybe a witch hunt!!!!

Just curious if the Ed30 has been changed back to normal or sold yet??? Any news???
-
no word from Mr Willis yet.
I did get an email from "Customer Services" asking for my address so they could start to investigate the claim....
You couldn't make it up - on the basis VW UK managed to get an email system running amongst other big projects (something to do with retailing and automobiles i think) I did suggest that they could make a start without the database being complete. I did oblige however so I guess they're drafting a response for Mr Willis soon.....

Not been to the dealer since I took the photos as its a bit out of my way. I'll try and go again some time in April and post an update!

As promised - apparently this got out the factory like this - a lesson to us all!

Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 30
Dear Mr Watson
Thank you for your further e-mail received in this office on 27 March 2007, and for attaching your contact details.
We required this information in order to log a complaint on our database so that a permanent record can be kept of your comments and our investigation. Please be assured that this information will not be used for any marketing purposes, nor will it be passed to any third parties.
I have discussed the comments made on a GolfGTI.co.uk forum with the Sales Manager at the retailer in question. They confirmed that they are aware that the rear valance on their showroom Golf GTI Edition 30 is incorrect.
Unfortunately, this was not noticed until recently by staff at the retailer involved, but as soon as the mistake was highlighted they looked into the matter and discovered that the vehicle had arrived from our Factory with the incorrect rear bumper.
A new rear valance has been ordered and received at the retailer, and I have had confirmation today that this has now been fitted to the vehicle. The Sales Manager has also confirmed that all of his Sales Executives are now aware that the Edition 30 has body-coloured bumpers as standard.
With respect to the forum's comments about the tyres on the vehicle, I was advised that the nearside front alloy was damaged on delivery. Therefore, the spare wheel was fitted temporarily whilst a new alloy was ordered. In moving the vehicle around the workshop and showroom in the meantime, the spare wheel will have picked up some dirt. The replacement has already been fitted and the spare wheel returned to the boot. The retailer have also now arranged for the spare wheel to be cleaned.
I would like to take this opportunity to apologise for any confusion that this matter may have caused, and also to thank you for bringing this to our attention and allowing us the opportunity to comment.
Yours sincerely
Rob John

mmmm. come on an Edition 30 with a standard rear bumper.
Well Im sorry Mr Clarkson but your Ford GT left the factory with a Fiesta Diesel engine. It just happened to get past ALL our quality control & quality assurance checks. Sorry but it just did.
mmmmmm. What do you guys think?
-
Talking a load of c7ap
-
Well I think sales staff who don't know what they are selling is a very poor show
How dirty must their showroom have been to have the spare tyre as dirty as to be noticable from a distance
-
What a load of Bo11ocks!!! He's saying that a LIMITED EDITION car of LIMITED QUANTITY got transported from the factory to the showroom... AND NO ONE NOTICED!!!!!!!!! BU11SH1T!!!! If it was a stock GTI bumper I could understand but a bog standard bumper... please!!!
And about that wheel... They can't take very good care of the cars if they managed to curb a wheel by taking it off a transporter!!! (Assuming this was the case!!!)
I hate it when people like this talk cr@p!!
-
I really dont think that this is a big deal, brand new cars get damaged ALL the time, ask anyone that works at a main agent! the wheel story sounds perfectly feasable.. why else would the spare be on the car, unless it had a punture!
The bumper story probably has a little white lie attached to it, more likely whats happened is that the origional has been damaged, and a new one is probably on a "back order" from the factory, which could take several weeks to arrive.. again, this happens all the time! my guess is that a bumper cover from a lesser model, was temporarily fitted to keep the car in the showroom, rather than parked up, round the back somewhere collecting dents and scratches
Nothing sinister has gone on, just an poorly informed salesman, has been caught out by a eagle eyed VW enthusiast!

Sorry. Should have made myself more clear. Same site as you guys but Golf 2 specific.

Sorry guys, been away for a while with no internet access. Anyway, I agree with you Tom, and I did surmise that something happened when the car came off the transporter. It just annoys me that either the salesman was so poorly informed, or just lying. I think that the comment that the car left the factory in that state has to be complete bo****ks. I'm sorry, but a car like that does stand out with an odd rear bumber.
Well, I'm pretty chuffed that at least they had the decency to reply to us and give us an explanation , which on the whole has the ring of truth about it, apart from the leaving the factory with the wrong bumper on bit!
The power of the internet eh?
