Title: I've got 8k to spend what do I do????
Post by: swiss on 15 February 2007, 16:20
Hi all,

Ok So I've got bout 7k and a blk m2 8v 1990 original with very tidy interior. I been trying to put a plan to gether to get the car where I want it to be. Turns out I won't have enough cash

I figured it would work out cheaper to get a really  nice blk mk2 90's spec for bout £3000-£3500. I'm hoping the car would have coilover's, deep dish rims bout 8j or 9j, g60 arches, full stainless ect.

My aim then is, to get the interior re-trimmed in leather, and get an engine conversion done, g60 pos a 20v turbo depending on the insurance :undecided:

I don;t know!!!!

I'm hoping to have the car up to show standards, don't know if I'm being realistic though.
What should I do/ expect with the cash???

Have you thought about doing something with a Rallye with that amount of cash?

I have thought about it, but I don't think its for me. not as kean on the shape either.
But if some one could impress me with one wich is for sale than maybe I'd go down that road but I do prefer the other shape more.

what bout buying a G60 so u already got the power there, so u just need to tweak it a bit. you would save money in that respect because even if you did the conversion yourself it wouldnt be that cheap

I could take a while to find one but with that amount of loot I would try and get a G60 Syncro, although its not a VW with 8 grand to spend I would look at a e30 M3 ?

Sorry :embarrassed: meant to say if I get the G60 conversion it would already have to be converted, cheaper to work with you're right there

As far as the BMW concerned thats not my kind of thin, round the city I live in no one will ever let me pull out from a turning
After all with that kinda cash I could get things like a scooby or civic type R  I mean after all that's the sort of thing I'm up against most of the time not to mention those flippin cossie's  just wanna wipe the smirk of the drivers face whem I see those shoot past me  sure some of you know what I mean.
SORY bot the rant. :embarrassed:

Does need to be a mk2 golf really. thanks for the suggestions though they have been taken on board.

Is 8k enough to put a decent show motor together???

Thanks all of you

£8k I would of thought should be enough for a show car, you might have to be shrewd with purchases and shop around but I would definately say its doable

personally I wouldn't waste it on a car. but that's just me.

Can't seem to think of anything better to spend the cash on. I mean I already own a 4.5k DJ set up, own my own house Have a kid, cool job etc etc.
So with me having a kid, raving is out the window at the mo ( gotta be responsible. )  so I figured with a really nice Mk2 I could still have great time ( taking the family to the shows,)

Like I said could do with some help. need to get some sort of a plan together.

Cheers.

to tangle with the cosworth lot you need to get a 20vt in there. put it in your current car, should cost about 4k, spend the rest on wheels, coilovers and interior and then save a bit more and get the paint work sorted. a re-mapped BAM engine will be good for 270bhp which is plenty in a mk2.

If I do something with a g60 (already converted) What sort of mottor's would it take out??
Just don't find my 8v a thrill any more, it's fun but once I got used to its power I soon thought to myself its not as fast as I always thought as a kid. after all the Mk2 has always been may all time fave car.

My paint work is looking its age on my 8v so.....? suppose that would need doing if I end up keeping the car.

I've been quoted 1500 for a g60 conversion Mk2, so a 20v prob be a fair bit more. I need to check that out really.

Hope a good 90s spec mottor pops up soon with most things done ie coilovers, brakes, deep dish wheels, g60 arches, clean blk paint work, then all I need to do is the engine, interior & the innovative mods ie when it gets dark the head lamps switch on automatically ( easy / cheap & impress my mates.) and a few others I won't mention  :smug:

Title: Re: I've got 8k to spend what do I do????
Post by: Neaty on 17 February 2007, 18:33
one question, why have you used a diesel crank? surely they are much heavier than normal
Title: Re: I've got 8k to spend what do I do????
Post by: shaft69 on 17 February 2007, 23:46
Diesel crank got long throw to give you extra cc's. You can get 83.5 or 84mm pistons but that means thinning cyl block wall. Also those pistons cost furtune and finding them pretty hard and costly. Car revvs to limiter no less than when it was standard even better as just fitted kent cam, And got super chip to fit yet. On the cost of car swiss not sure as yet as not finished it to my standard. May decide to keep it yet, I sold my bmw M3 for this to get back in the dub seen.  I'll have to see when finally finished

ah i c, so its a 2.0 TDI from a mark 4 crank?
Title: Re: I've got 8k to spend what do I do????
Post by: swiss on 18 February 2007, 22:08
Alrighty then   Went to dub freeze today (Stafford)   Had a brill time and ended up getting some motivation to keep my 8v and get it modified, after all with my budget I can do hell of a job providing I don't do a G60 or 20v conversion.

I'll just do the usual, coilovers, rims, brakes, exhaust/manifold,  2e block, cams p&p head, Chroming, Leather Recaro re-trim, accessories, wicked sound system, shot blasting, paint job so I'll get a project post sorted for you guys to have a look.

Thanks,
Swiss

You could always go down the vr6 route with the engine, apparently a conversion costs between 1k-1.5k and is not too difficult to do. Theres lots of info on www.mk2vr6.com (http://www.mk2vr6.com).

Thats what I'm planning to do eventually, just gotta sort the rest of the car first!
