Since my recent engine rebuild, cam, pulley etc, my P6000's aren't giving me any grip in the G60.
What tyres will give me the best grip?
I'm thinking Yoki AVS Sport / Goodyear Eagle F1 / Toyo Proxes T1-R
Any recommendations on which will do the best job, or am I fighting a lost cause.
-
I would go for Goodyear Eagle F1's any day mate, I've had P6000's and P5000 Dragos and to be honest I thought they were complete sh!te for grip and wear. I've used Yoko's and Toyo's and both gave good grip but jesus do they wear out quick, so as I said for me its F1's all the way
-
problem is once you start to hit the 200bhp mark front wheel drive cars always suffer with grip problems if ya plant ya right foot. especially at this time of year , the only viable soloution is an lsd conversion , i used to suffer serious wheel spin in my 205 , due to 200+bhp it would wheelspin up to 3rd gear if i planted it , only way to limit this was to bring the power on smoothly.

Im using g/year f1's 195/45's all round no grip in wet at all. Mines 8v 2.1 and in dry good but not brilliant and high torque to front ain't good. As man says above lsd only way foward really. I've driven mk2 16v with quaife diff fitted superb espacially round corners in wet.

Nice Ronals Mate...Same as mine
-
I had some Toyo Proxes TS1-S on my GTI and they didn't last long at all, but the TS1-Rs I fitted to replace them were much harder wearing. Better grip in the wet 'they' say as well :)
Worth a punt, and if they arn't any good swap to the back and fit Eagle F1s, which are a very highly recommended, though you pay for the privilage!
-
best thing to do m8t is for the winter get some cheap alloys on it £100 jobbie and then some very soft compound tyres then change when the wether starts getting better to something firmer :D
best of both worlds then :D

My G60 has a stage 4 charger but is currently on standard pulley. I can spin up the tyres in third no problem.
Metering out the throttle is the key.
My daily has Eagle F1 and the G60 has Toyo. F1s are deffo better.
As mentioned above a Quaiffe LSD is tempting, but it's £400+ ish plus fitting. Most people also swap the 1st and 2nd gears for the ratios from a Mk3 VR6 at the same time too. (The G60 ratios are too short!)
Downside to LSD is increased risk of torque steer.
-
Cheers guys.
The Quaiffe LSD is tempting but not tempting enough at the mo for that money.
Think I'll invest in some F1's soon; only £35.20 a corner off 'my tyres' in 195/50/15.

Toyo T1Rs are great, as is the model above them the....888.
Only downside with the T1Rs i find...sidewalls are a little soft.
But very good grip wet or dry.
-
i agree with the F1s best tyres i have ever had no question! good in dry and wet on a sader note the tread looks good with ya wheels on a slant!
-
fit transmittion tunnel, syncro box, transfere box, drive shift, rear diff and rear drive shafts and bingo you have 4 wheel drive and more grip.
lol
or if you dont want to or already have 4wd then f1's will do fine lol

The T1R has the reinforced sidewall, hence the R for reinforced, T1S's have a very soft sidewall, hence they are a swine to stretch on rims!
-
Hmmmm maybe my T1Rs are duds (205/50/15) Having had Michlen Pilot sports prior to these....i think they are a little soft.
But still a very good tyre for the money  Next time i will go for that Toyo model above them the 888.

You got two options....
Fit 9j's all around!
Buy a Rallye...
Does that help? Ho ho
-
Or Buy a Mk2 1.3 as a daily and save the 60 for dry weather ! lol
-
A lot of people rate the Michelin Pilot Sport 2 very highly, especially in the wet. Being a Michelin fitter I am biased, but I do have a lot of guys coming in with Impreza's, Evo's, Porsche's etc claiming they will not fit anything else cos nothing comes close for grip.
A cheaper place than mytyres is www.camskill.co.uk all their prices include delivery and the service is very good.
HTH,
Tony

I had Michelin Pilot Sport 2 on my Bugeye Impreza running 325bhp and the only time it would ever loose grip was when it was power slidding off roundabouts.. hoho. The 4WD system did compliment the tyres though. They were great in the dry and probably just as good in the wet too. Not cheap though

Got my Grandad's old Mk3 1.1 (Fiesta!!) to get from A to B till the weather improves, and locked the G up for a bit! Definitely the cheapest option out of all the suggestions; cheaper fuel too. Will get the same amount to the £, but will be Miles rather than Kilometres!!

Good Job!
So did "The Phirm" sort ya car in the end, whats was done? i defo remember seeing it down there. Went down there a few times when i had the Rallye.

Yeah they did. Waited a couple of months for some forged pistons from the States, and in the end got a whole new bottom end from VW!! Was off the road for nearly 6 months in the end.
Got a high-lift cam and smaller pulley too along with a few other bits. New Chip coming next, hopefully next month..... Lovin' it (when it's dry!!!!!!!!)

Your best place to get Michelins is Costco, I have not managed to find anyone who can match them on price. Most places in Aberdeen have stopped stocking Michelin as they can't compete with Costco.
