Title: Driving the 16v!
Post by: Godzilla on 21 May 2006, 02:24
Well i have now owned my GTI 16v for just over 2 weeks now. Very impressed with the build quality of the car. So far seems easy for diy jobs to be done and happy with the economy. I must admit im finding the performance tricky to get used to as there is not much pull until it passes 4000rpm. I have heard the 8v pulls strongly from low revs but not driven one so cant comment. The handling is great. Previous owner had Bilstien shocks and had it lowered 40mm all round. Got a few more things to do....must get rid of the Pipercross filter for one, im sure its causing my car to judder! It judders when the engine is warm so i think the filter is drawing in too much hot air? Overall a good car and very happy .

you have made the right choice 16v all the way.I had a eight valve and it is true what they say it does seem to pull a lot better at low revs. But 16v have the power at top end or is it bottom end :undecided:.

The performance of the Valver is after 4000rpm mainly this can be improved by fitting a 2.0 litre bottom end from a later golf or Audi. Other than that improving the breathing (without the pipercross!) makes quite a difference refit the original airbox with an uprated panel filter and remove the plastic bungs on the airbox and wing. Add a manifold back full stainless exhaust. A rolling road will help make it a smoother power delivery and you should get more driveability from it.
They are a real nice driving car just got to engage heavy right foot which isn't a problem for me

me neither!

I like the way the 16v drives, very docile around town etc... but floor it and it flys!

they do lack a bit of torque though.

stop it you are making me miss my 16v more and more

they are great though arent they! I didnt find the lack of grunt below 4000rpm to be a problem nor a flaw. I actually quite liked it as if i was having a bit of a do against someone it was mint when they used to think they are beating you then al of a sudden you hit 4000rpm and you are gone! superb!

Mine feels like it comes on cam twice, once at about 2.5k, and again at 4k, i love my car, despite all it's hissy fits it has and breaking things all the time, i still love it. Will be even better when i have tinkered with it some more  :smug:

Excuse me if i sound a bit thick now! (m not very mechanicaly minded!) but why does a 16v GTI pick up after 4000rpm? Also regarding an exhaust system, do they really make a differance in performance or is it purley for show and noise?

I dnt really know why 16valves pick up later on in the revs but I am sure someone can explain, but with regards to exhausts, if you get a full stainless steel system including a 4 into 1 manifold then it does increase ur power aswell as making it sound different.

I've read reports that using a 42mm inlet manifold inside of the 50mm one trades some of the high end power for lower end torque. Depends what you're after.

I heard the 16v is just as strong as the 8v in low revs (i.e. under 4k)  they just feel lower powered as they're so much smoother - I haven't actually seen any dyno-sheets to proove this though

correct. 16v never has less torque than an 8v across the whole rev range - although alot depends on the state of your own engine!!

well ive been driveing mine for a day now and ive never had so much fun, 4500 is my point of grin and i also get a semi point of grin at around 2500 too which is cool, i just accelarated to 90 from 70 up a steep hill that i useually cant even hold 80 on! great fun

As said but max torque 114 ft.lb of 8v is @ 3000rpm, so thats where it feels good, The 16v max torque of 124ft.lb is @ 4400rpm, hence feels good up there, however the torque of the 16v at 3000rpm is 118ft.lb which is only 3.5% higher than the 8v but the kerb weight of the standard 16v is 8% higher so on a torque/weight basis the 16v is 4.5% down on the 8v at 3000rpm. It does not sound like very much but down is down and it does'nt make up this defecit until about 4000rpm as the 8v torque drops off and the 16v torque starts to peak. The engine torque is only a guide as the gearbox ratios are a bit different and its the torque actually applied at the driveshafts which gives accelleration. In 'normal' day to day driving a petrol engine works between 1500 and 3500rpm which is right in the 8v maximum torque band which is why it feels so good, you never really find the 4400 in a 16v until you are in the open and can give it a bit, so its always feels a bit in the doldrums compared with the 8v in the normal 'pottering' driving rev band.   Please lets not start another 8v vs 16v thing....

 thats all a load of blah blah blah when you stick the engine in a mk1

Regarding the exhaust question - my 16V has a full scorpion system running in conjunction with a piper panel filter and original airbox. It's torquey as hell - I would say very nearly as torquey as the 8Vs I have driven and torquier by far than any VTI/Type-R cars I've owned.  Then you hit 4000 rpm and get the power as well. Definitely pick up a decent exhaust - the look and noise are just a bonus.

i agree about the normal pottering around driveing, mine does seem abit guttless if i decide to floor it, if i want it to go somewhere i have to drop a gear to get the revs up, which is fine cause it feels cool anyway
