Should get a nice one for 3k. look at: http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=3072.0
Can pick up a decent 3door with 80k fsh(a must) with 17s ect already on
Main thing to check is the tailgate and all the panels for rust. Obviously check the engines not been abused.
If you could stretch to 3500 you could pick up a highline

after talking to a few peeps im now undecided about  one.   been put off by some so called issues with cam chains and expensive rebuilds.
something i dont realy know alot about.
id like a mk3 cause ihavent had one yet,  so might plump for an 8 or 16v 3 door instead.  and keep the cabby till mid summer.

theres a lot of bolox talked about vr6 chains ,they can go but it is obvious if they are on there way out (usually down to bad servicing and cold thrashing)
and also often its not the chains but the tensioner that is worn and can often be solved with a new hydraulic tensioner bolt,
dont be put off a vr6 as they can go for 150 k + without major work and you just cant beat that sound or the power delivery,

Il second that!!
test drove a mk3 16v and altho quick it just doint the supurb noise a vr6 has.
There is always a rick with buying any sort of car but the 2 vr6s iv owned have been sound.

have you seen: http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=3072.0
or try lookin on www.vr6.oc.com there loads on there

Fuel wise i get 25mpg out of this vr (97 highline)and got 22 out of my last (was older one). Doesnt help i onli do very local miles. iv seen 36mpg on the maf at times on long trips tho. It is a thirsty car.
Ho wever the power is supurb, it took me a while to get use to as i had a 1.4 before! and was used to flooring it all the time. You find the vr6 drives it self with all that power very comfortable! can be over powering at times and around corners if you dont know what your doing.
mk3s can have a boaty like suspension but you will find that in a gti or vr6, just need some upgraded shocks ect.

mine has been AMD rechipped and returns about 30 mpg (its very easy to drop it below 20 though if your having fun )
the handling on the original shocks is bound to be a bit iffy (remember the vr6 wasnt a sports car but a topend motor to compete in the bmw  market!) but a set of coilovers transforms it into a car capable of keeping with most ,
just buy one you will not regret it they have got to be the best value golf you can get  ,
